A collapsing Universe that needs saving? Check. A broken head full of equally as broken memories? Tuesday stuff. Sixty years on ice, and endless tide of Nazis who need punching, best friends who always need saving? Steve could handle it all. Keeping the team working while Fury pulled all the strings or wielding the infinity gauntlet? Sure. No problem. Lifting Thor's hammer even had been entirely workable for Steve without even having him break much of a sweat. This, however? This was much different, this was a whole new kind of concern, and this was making him sweat the proverbial bullets. His hands twitched, more from nerves than he wanted to admit, and pulled at the confines of the suit he'd picked up for the evening. It fit well enough, perfectly really, yet Steve swore the thing had some kind of heater in it. Maybe Bruce or Tony had found it and thought to play a practical joke? Or Clint. That seemed like something Barton would do. Itching powder in the back of the collar seemed a fine explanation as to why he couldn't stop rubbing said spot on the back of his neck. Of course the truth of the matter was a lot simpler than that. He was Steve Rogers, he was Captain America. He faced down the impossible on a daily basis and he didn't break. He was the rock upon which the whole world could lean, the indomitable oak that stood tall in the face of whatever got thrown at it. He was the man who could not, would not, break. He never took a knee no matter how hard he got hit and he never stayed down no matter how hard anyone tried to keep him there. He was all of that and, since the day she'd come into his life really, he'd also been something more. Since the day he'd met Sharon Carter, Steve's life had never been the same. The two had faced down more adversity than he could possibly even begin to recount. They'd lived, they'd died, and somewhere along the way, they'd managed to fall in love. The order was never that simple of course, with each being plucked from the other over and over again. Since arriving here in Storybrooke, since spending time with her on a more regular basis, Steve had seen that for the truth of what it was. He'd been an arrogant man with her at times, foolish with her at others, and each and every time Sharon had told him where he could stick those ideas. She did what she believed was right, no matter what it cost her. Arguably, the list of reasons why she was wonderful as she was could have gone on for years. So too could the list of reasons where Steve was starting to understand he'd made mistakes with her and how he'd treated her. He knew, despite the fact that Time Travel was very much possible, there wasn't any going back to undo those mistakes. He knew, if went home, Sharon would be ripped from him again. He knew, if that happened, it would break his heart in a way he didn't think it could ever mend. He knew, if he didn't take this chance at this moment, if he didn't be the man he was supposed to be, he might not get another moment to try again -- and Steve Rogers was not a man who missed an opportunity like this one. The hours he'd managed to sneak in brushing up on his ability to dance was a testament to his seriousness. The way he'd had to sneak and skulk around Storybrooke to find the ring too was worthy of mention, as it was a well documented fact that Steve had never been very good at sneaking. Logan had made sure to chide him about often over the course of their friendship even, and still that felt easier than trying to stash and cart the supplies down to the docks in a suit. All this had to be done, hopefully without being busted by anyone he'd neglected to mention he was doing this to until he'd been about to walk out the door, after taking the time to craft his little note and slip out into the night. Let it never be said that Steve was not a dedicated man. The sight her silhouette was enough to freeze him in his tracks and Steve, in a last ditch attempt to summon his resolve, cleared his throat. "I told the kidnappers who my girlfriend was..." He shrugged sheepishly. "It was enough to scare them away. I just figured it would be shame to waste this nice setting so...I thought I'd wait." He smiled at her, boyishly giddy on the inside. "I'm just glad you decided to come after me. It could have been a long night." |
