"Did you see that double loop - nailed it, right?"
The twins embraced Ben in a flurry of hugs and chatter after the show had ended. The acts that he'd seen them painstakingly working through, with blood, sweat and tears (all literal, although the latter only from Raine, and mostly out of his sight if she could help it) had gone off without a hitch. Given that they'd always secured free tickets for their friends, there weren't many ways they could show their appreciation beyond.. Well, just showing it.
After a couple of minutes of happy chatter, Raine declared
"I'm going to find Dallas. See you at school Ben. Thanks again," and with a bright smile, she disappeared. Her expression was not matched by Kyte, whose face had turned stormy at the mention of the older boy.
"Dallas is the gorilla that gave you your tickets," he explained, once Raine was out of ear shot. Said gorilla had looked, in fact, more like a skinny teenage boy, and had been nothing but polite and enthusiastic on welcoming Ben.
"We don't like him," he explained to Ben. The youth in question had now emerged from the tent some yards behind them. Judging by the way Raine vaulted into his outstretched arms, wrapping her legs around his waist and giving him a very enthusiastic, very much non-verbal greeting, 'we' in this context did not refer to the twins as a unit. Kyte firmly kept his back to the scene, but his scowl intensified as if he were able to see it plainly.
"He's nineteen, for Merlin's sake!" he burst out angrily. "What's wrong with him? Can't he find a girl his own age and leave Raine alone?"
Behind him, Raine was giggling and stroking Dallas' hair, not exactly looking like she was objecting to his attention.
