Fred stirred in his sleep, the soft muffled sound coming from across the hall had reached his ears and caused his rather mundane dream to fade into the distance. After a minute, he was awake, and figured out what it was that he was hearing.
One of the babies had woken up, and was making that fact known.
He wasn't sure if it was one of his or not, but since the others were still asleep, he decided to go investigate this himself.
Giving George a soft peck on the cheek, he then turned to Katie and did the same before slipping out of bed. After pulling the blanket up more securely against Katie's sleeping form and looking over at Pansy, who was dreaming peacefully on the other side of his twin, he crept across the hall, clad in his pyjama bottoms.
Peeking into the nursery, he noticed that George's sons were still asleep, as was one of his daughters. His other daughter, however, was fussing a bit.
Walking over to the crib, he looked inside, and Marilyn looked back up at him. As soon as she saw her daddy, her crying slowed, and a small near smile played upon her lips. Grinning down at her, he reached in and gently lifted her up, holding her against his chest as he moved over to the rocking chair and small table next to it.
Katie and Pansy had several prepared bottles there, which were charmed to stay cool, just in case one of the twins woke up to take care of a midnight feeding. Even though the babies were now mostly sleeping through the night, they still left them to be safe.
Fred took one of the bottles that Katie had left and sat down in the rocker, shifting Marilyn in his arms very carefully before placing the nipple against his daughter's lips. He watched as she took it into her small mouth and began to suck at it, drinking down the liquid that the bottle contained.
Gazing down at her, his eyes full of wonder, he kept watching her angelic face. It never ceased to amaze him, that he and Katie created these twin lives together. As much as he loved Jake, his adopted older son, it still filled him with a sense of awe that he did this.
After a few minutes, Marilyn pushed her mouth away from the bottle, and Fred placed it back onto the table. He took one of the receiving blankets and placed it over his shoulder before moving his daughter again, rubbing her back as gently as possible until he knew she was done.
Shifting her back in his arms again, he smiled at her. "So, you have your Daddy up at strange hours again, I take it you missed me?" he asked her, and Marilyn gave him that small half grin again. Chuckling, he shook his head slightly. "How about this: I sing to you, and maybe you can let your old man get some more sleep?"
Marilyn cooed at him in response, and he took that as a yes.
Sighing contentedly, he held her a bit closer and began to sing a song that his Dad had sang to him and George when they were little.
Christopher Robin and I walked along Under branches lit up By the moon Posing our questions To Owl and Eeyore As our days disappeared All too soon But I've wandered much further Today than I should And I can't seem to find my way Back to the Wood
So help me if you can I've got to get Back to the House At Pooh Corner by one You'd be surprised There's so much to be done Count all the bees in the hive Chase all the clouds from the sky Back to the days of Christopher Robin and Pooh
Winnie the Pooh Doesn't know what to do Got a honey jar stuck on his nose He came to me Asking help and advice And from here no one knows where he goes So I sent him to ask of the Owl If he's there How to loosen a jar From the nose of a bear
It's hard to explain How a few precious things Seem to follow throughout All our lives After all's said and done I was watching my daughter Sleeping there with my bear By her side So I tucked her in, I kissed her And as I was going I swear that old bear whispered, "Girl, welcome home"
Believe me if you can I've finally come Back to the House at Pooh Corner by one What do you know There's so much to be done Count all the bees in the hive Chase all the clouds from the sky Back to the days of Christopher Robin Back to the ways of Christopher Robin Back to the days of Pooh
As he was singing, he didn't notice that Katie had gotten out of bed, and was watching them from the doorway. She stood leaning against it, her arms folded across her chest and tears in her eyes, as she watched her husband singing to one of their daughters.
Once he finished singing, he saw that Marilyn had gone to sleep, and he bent down to kiss her. "I love you, pumpkin," he whispered softly as he stood up.
It was then that he noticed Katie.
"Sweetheart, how long have you been there?" he asked her as she approached him.
"Long enough to hear you singing to Marilyn. And you are the sweetest bloke in the world, Fred Weasley," she answered before giving him a soft kiss.
Fred gave her a kiss back, then gazed down at Marilyn again. "I get that from you, Mrs. Weasley. And it looks like someone's finally back asleep," he said, and he shifted so that Katie could take their daughter and place her gently back into her crib.
He looked into the crib and gave Marilyn one last smile before peeking into Rowan's crib and doing the same, telling his other daughter how much he loved her and adjusting her blanket.
Katie had checked on Liam and Morgan, George and Pansy's twin sons, to make sure they were all right. When she was done, she walked over and wrapped her arms around Fred from behind.
"I love you, Freddie," she whispered, snuggling against his back for a minute before Fred turned to face her.
"And I love you, Katie doll, very much," he replied, bending to kiss her again before taking her hand. "Let's get some sleep, shall we?"
"Sounds good to me, love," she told him, clutching his hand as they left the nursery and went back to their bedroom again.
