Up on a Rooftop (Lee)
Catwoman sat on the rooftop, enjoying the cool night air of The City and watching the clouds roll across the full moon.

That was one thing about this place, the air wasn't polluted like it could be in Gotham.

Stars twinkled high above, but she didn't recognize any of the constellations. The constellations of The City were something new and different. She idly wondered if the library would contain the names of the new constellations.

She sat relaxing. She had always been an insomniac, but tonight she'd gotten to sleep fairly early. The night had called her from her sleep though, and she had responded by donning her costume and heading up to the rooftop of her apartment building. From there, it had been easy to glide from rooftop to rooftop until she found one that looked comfortable to watch the sky from.

Shit. Shit shit shit. "You too?" she said, her voice steadier than she would have thought it would be. "Goddamn. You're right; this place sucks."

She'd known that other people had died. Hell, she had started looking into it shortly before being stabbed. She hadn't known that any of the others had come back from it, though. Good fucking God, I wonder what their Guardians went through. If she could have seen Rising Sun or Holly or any of the rest (especially Holly) come back...

"So. Pissed about coming back from the Great Hereafter?"

"Yeah me too. Was on a rooftop and then... dead. Stayed here in The City from what I could tell. As for being pissed... I don't think that's the word. I mean, it seems cruel. From the sounds of the newspapers, there were a lot of deaths." She frowned in concentration, trying to think of what the news had said. "And from what I remember, almost everyone murdered came back. But I came back determined... I remembered that I'd forgotten to look into something, so I was glad that one of my lives was used up so I can go searching for someone."

She'd become quite the talker since she'd gotten to The City. But she liked the other woman. She was someone who had been to hell and back, and because of that Catwomen liked her.

"Sucks," she said by way of commiseration. "If there're any shrinks in this city, they must be having a field day right now. Most people can't take getting cut off in traffic, much less coming back from the dead."

She smirked suddenly. "You're really into this whole cat motif, aren't you?" She fumbled for a cigarette before remembering that this getup didn't have any pockets, and therefore none of the things she usually kept in pockets. "Um. You don't happen to smoke, do you?"

Catwoman shrugged. "It does suck, but what doesn't kill ya makes ya stronger, right?" She was dealing with the whole dying back. After all, she'd just used up one of her lives.

"As for the cat thing yeah, I like cats. I feed the alley cats around my apartment all the time. I've also been known to give anonymous amounts to the animal shelter here. People mistreat cats in so many ways... see, now you've got me started on animal cruelty." She laughed. What else could she say, she was the costumed version of the Crazy Cat Lady, and she wasn't afraid to admit it.

"Nope, no smoking for me... although, I have been known to drink sometimes. Otherwise, need to keep fit and healthy to run across rooftops." She grinned. "We could always see if we can get one from someone on the street..."

"Actually, what doesn't kill you usually fucks you up mentally, whether outright or in the form of a latent psychosis. It's just that in some people, it gives them a reason to think that it's all for some greater purpose down the road, when all it really was is a cosmic accident that they survived. Here's a secret, Catwoman: there's no greater reason for any of this." She waved an arm out at the expanse of the City. "It's all an experiment that went on way longer than it should have. But," she said, pursing her lips thoughtfully, "cats are nice. Most animals are. And the good thing about cats is, they're great judges of character. A dog'll stay with you if you beat it, but a cat won't take your shit. If it can leave, it will." Her mouth twisted wryly. "Now if only most people were half that smart." Or angels.

Catwoman listened to what Lee had to say intently. She wasn't a religious person and she didn't need to know there was some higher power above it all. She'd learned, sometimes the hard way, that there was no one out there listening. That you just had to do the best you knew how.

"An experiment that went on too long eh? Well, I guess that wouldn't surprise me. Sometimes it seems like people shouldn't be around anymore - they just keep fucking the world up more and more." She looked out into the vastness that was The City and paused a moment before saying, "As for the cat bit, I couldn't agree with you more. And cats will stick around with you even when people don't, I've learned that too"

"Of course, I'm sure a world filled with nothing but cats would suck equally but differently. Hairballs and shredded furniture everywhere." She smiled then, and not her more usual tight twist of a smile. "They'd sleep all day and never get anything done. It'd be like a planet full of tiny hairy alcoholics."

Catwoman laughed at the thought of a planet full of tiny, hair alcoholics. The visual of that was just too funny.

"I supposed in some ways you're right, cats can be assholes, just like humans can be, I've just seen too many asshole humans who do cruel and sadistic things, and all cats want is to be fed and scratched a little." She sighed.

She was genuinely curious about Lee. She was almost a little sad that she had on her costume, she was thinking that Lee could be a good friend.

"So tell me about where you're from. Anything you miss about home?"

Lee decided to start and end with her most recent whereabouts. "Bete Noir. Little city in Louisiana. I wouldn't be surprised if you haven't heard of it, but... some people say everyone goes there eventually. It's that kind of place." She shrugged and picked at a fingernail. "I miss my bartender. You?"

No, she wasn't interested. She wasn't lonely. She didn't want a friend. Not at all. Nope.

...dammit.

"No, haven't heard of Bete Noir. I've been to a lot of places, but not there, although, maybe I would have ended up there eventually."

She thought of all the places that she'd been in her life, but Gotham had always been her home. No matter what, she'd ended up back in Gotham, where her friends and yes, even her family was from.

"I'm from a little place called Gotham. Big city, lots of crime." She refrained from admitting that she was involved in some of that crime. The other woman could draw her own conclusions. "I think I miss my best friend Holly the most. She's a kid I helped get off the streets. Kinda raised her, even though the age difference wasn't that much."

She also missed Slam. And her relationship with Bruce. The two of them had come to a pretty good understanding. It was hard not to have that even though there was a Bruce there.

One of Lee's fists clenched tightly, and the muscles at her jaw tensed, but the name didn't provoke as strong of a reaction as it once might have. "Never been there." And before she could stop herself, very quietly, "I used to know a little girl named Holly. Long, long time ago."

Shit. Subject change. "You know what? I'm entirely too sober to be having this conversation, and I would kill for a cigarette. You up for a change of scenery?"

She noticed Lee's reaction to the name Holly, and just nodded at the other woman's response.

Catwoman was up for a drink. Wasn't sure how well she would blend into a bar costumed though.

"Sure, I'm up for a change of scenery, where are you thinking?"

Catwoman didn't probe. Lee approved.

"There's a nice little hole in the wall about seven blocks that way," she said, pointing down the road behind her. "They serve my brand of beer and don't ask questions about why I show up there dressed like a walking blood clot, so you'll probably fit right in. Sound good?"

Catwoman smiled.

"Sounds perfect."

OOC: Shall we start a new thread at the bar? It would probably make our lives easier. If you put it up, I'll reply. :)

((Sure! Keep it to us, or open it to have people wander in and bug them?))

"'kay." She stood and dusted off her clothes, then paused. "Need a lift, or can you make your own way?"

OOC: Why don't we open it up? We may or may not get a bite and it could be fun to include someone else!

"I can make my own way. See you in a few!"

With that she left to go freshen up.
