Annie froze. Her connection to Jarvis through her phone completely forgotten. The voice had burst through her memories and brought with it the memory of extreme pain and incredible fear. She couldn't move for a moment, felt like her limbs had ceased to work. Her eyes slid up the glass, hoping that when she found the reflection there she would discover that she had been wrong.
But that grinning face.
Her stomach dropped, weighted with boulders. Icy chills rolled up her spine, raising goosebumps over the whole of her body. Unpleasant crawling feelings, like bugs just under her skin, started at her hairline and worked over the rest of her.
Never.
She had never expected to face this man again.
He had shot her. Hurt her. Left her for dead. Annie had thought that he was gone. That she was free. She hadn't even tried to look for him once she'd gotten out of the hospital. And it hadn't even crossed her mind to be worried since she'd gotten back. She'd been so happy, carefree, with Tony...
Her mouth was filled with cotton.
If she'd had the wherewithal, Annie would have wished she was a fighter. Instead, she was paralyzed with fear. Afraid for her life. Unable to think. He was going to hurt her again, she knew. That smile.
