The jarring absence of him was as much of a shock as the rest of it. She staggered when he pulled away, and mentally scrambled to make sense of what he said.

She had no idea. Move? Move. She moved, reaching for him without thinking. "Here," she said, not sure if she was actually answering so much as asking an altogether different question. But she thought her reading spot was a good place - it was here, and as she dropped down into the blankets, she set her hands on his boots, tugging the laces free and loosening them. Such practical matters came easily.
The rest of this was getting more confusing. Self-consciousness started to edge into her hands and they already hadn't been steady. Swallowing, she leaned back on her heels.
