"I wouldn't." Eric promised. He was always blunt. Perhaps too blunt for some. Pam appreciated it, but she was the same way. John would get used to it, or it would become a sore spot between them. "There is nothing for you to be afraid of here, except for your own impulses. I know that it's difficult for you to think of humans as your food. You had it relatively easy in New Troy. We had an arrangement with them. They were glad to feed us. You can have similar arrangements here, should you want, you'll just have to find them."
In these days, it was probably better to have those arrangements than to hunt, despite how badly Eric wanted to send the boy out into the world with all his power to take what he wanted.
Eric moved them through the City to where he knew there would be a source of help for John. Purgatory wasn't the best place, but it had within it two things that the boy could use.
"You haven't had to deal with the noise and speed, the smells of a city, the way that it can look to powerful eyes. It's a lot to adjust to, and on top of that you've got all the humans around, smelling like blood. It can be stressful. When you want to be careful, you have to slowly acclimate yourself. We were fed, but we were not fed well. You have not had a full belly since you were made, and that too can be a heady temptation. Your instincts will respond to all the blood around you, even if you've just filled yourself."
Purgatory was closer than he'd expected, as they were upon it almost immediately. The red neon sign that spelled out the name glowed brightly in the night. Eric stopped walking and gestured.
"I own this. Well. The other Eric owns this with the other Pam. We have decided we all own it now. Within there are two things that you will find useful. There is a substance called True Blood. It is synthetic blood that will keep us alive. It does not taste very good, even if you find a type that you like. But it will sate you. You will take some bottles with you to keep nearby.
"Also, fangbangers. They are much like the people of New Troy, only here they allow you to drink because they are sexually attracted to you. You will not drink from humans on the bar's property, but that does not mean you can't go elsewhere to meet them."
He paused and looked at his only son. "You will come live in the castle with the rest of us." It was the closest Eric would ever really get to having a nest.
