Sam frowned as the little girl did not get on the bus. He looked at the other kids and then looked at her as the bus pulled away.
"I don't have a bus," he said with a faint smile. "What about you? Wasn't that your bus?"
He didn't know who the kid was but he thought he could recognize an outsider when he saw one. He'd seen the look in Maxine's eyes all too well, not to mention the looks from the other schoolkids. Sam had always been the weirdo, the freak, the kid who didn't quite fit in. Not that he was ever at many schools long enough, but that just made it worse.
