Maxine finally came out with her backpack strapped on her shoulders. Her expression was a mixture of competing emotions; shame, guilt and rage. She barely made eye contact with Ted, who seemed nice, but decided to keep her eyes peeled to his shoes.
Principal Crisp acknowledged the tiny student, "Maxine."
But he didn't stay to talk or lecture her. He was still uneasy around the super powered little girl, too. Maxine looked up at Ted once they were alone, less angry and more anxious over what he might say.
