The first two weeks of school had passed. Maxine grew like a weed and seemed to adjust better than many of the adults that had been brought into The City. With her new clothes and school supplies there seemed to be less and less to connect her to her old life. Maxine no longer discussed or seemed particularly impressed with super heroes. Though she still had some sort of power that gave her animal affinity, she did her stubborn child best to ignore it.
It didn't matter that she looked like a Disney cartoon depiction of Snow White with little birds and squirrels following her from the bus stop about a block and a half to Serenity.
"Go home," she said. After staring at the little animals on her heels, they slowly dispersed. Maxine put glow in the dark stars on her room and read about space. She wanted to be an astronaut like Wash, even if she didn't quite understand that his technology was more advanced than that.
Seeing Bruce, Maxine stared at him. She was more cautious around strangers than she had been when she first arrived, "Hi."
