Edward had never bothered to take up smoking. It was a waste of his time and his money. He had better things to do, to plot, scheme and steal, to be worried about taking a smoke break or trying to chase the high of nicotine. He'd rather coast on the climax of a good heist, something that proved valuable rather than something as trivial as smoking. But he wouldn't hold it against Jonathan for needing that fix. They'd been through another rough patch in their relationship and Eddie's deepest fears had surfaced through his massive ego for the faintest hint of a moment.
A fear that was completely unacceptable and never needed to shine through. Edward never wanted to believe that Jonathan would ever leave him for anyone else, that he wasn't good enough for his lover...his husband. It was too much to bear. Especially with the constant conflict with Enigma. Edward needed someone and Jonathan was really all he had.
Finally, Edward broke through the metal doors of the asylum and walked slowly towards the stables where Jonathan had asked him to be. He would've done anything Jonathan asked, just to make sure his fear never was exposed. But if that was what it took to maintain, then Edward would admit it.
He could hear Nightmare before he saw the pair, man and horse, Edward only able to smile at the sight of them. He approached the only man and beast he could tolerate in the entire world, pausing once he was at Jonathan's side. He curled an arm around his husband and breathed out softly. "What a beautiful day to make someone bleed." Edward whispered, looking up at the horse, fondly.
Edward remembered the first time he'd seen the horse. He knew it was perfect for Jonathan and so here she was. The perfect gift for the man he loved. Even if that love was inexpressible.
