beyond death (narrative)
Lindsey was actually GLAD to have his secretary back. This meant he could catch up on his research, and on seeing what the hell was going on, what the connections were, and how fucked he might really be.
He was mid-scroll through a page on some web site on the arcane when she waltzed into his office smiling broadly, and seeing a big envelope on his desk. It was one of the larger yellow ones, with bubble wrap inside, and it made crinkle noises as she set it down.
"This came for you," she said. "Be back in thirty."
He looked at the clock in the bottom right corner of his computer. Lunch time. He just nodded. And once she'd left, he took the envelope and opened it.
It was a DVD disc, and Lindsey eyed it, turning it over, before just putting it into the computer. If it had a virus, he knew he'd be sorry.
He wasn't prepared for what happened.
Holland Manners appeared on the screen, all smiles, just as he'd been in life.
"Lindsey," he said, congenially, "I'd like to take this opportunity to remind you that your contract with the firm extends... well, after your death."
His former boss grinned, and Lindsey grabbed the envelope to see if there was anything on it that could help him trace where it'd come from. He looked at the screen, and he recognized the L.A. Wolfram and Hart building as the setting. The DVD case itself looked older, a little scratched up.
"Just like mine. And your life?" Holland shook his head. "I think you'd better enjoy what little of it you have left. Wolfram and Hart has offices...everywhere."
He did a little poking at the file on the disc, and found the date it was created. It was shortly after he'd left the firm. It was, he realized, the very boardroom where he'd told them all to promote Lilah, just before he got out of Dodge. They'd had this ready and waiting the entire damn time?
And he hoped Holland was a lying bastard dead as well as alive.
