Who Said This Was Awkward? (Hatter & Jack)
Alice had told Hatter right off the bat that she was living in Jack's apartment. Technically, she guessed it was her apartment, too, now. But she preferred not to think of it that way. Especially since she was looking for another place to live. She'd been hoping that Hatter would ask her to stay with him, but he'd just mentioned going for pizza without her and acting as aloof as ever. He'd admitted to going through the looking glass to find her, but was it just to escape Wonderland or was it because he wanted to see her? She supposed she would never really know unless she asked him outright, and that wasn't going to happen any time soon.

She was in her room. Amazingly before the City had stopped moving, her closet had been filled with all the clothes she would normally wear, including some jis for martial arts practice. She was fingering them, wondering if she'd ever be able to teach again, when she heard the doorbell.

She was pretty sure Jack would get the door, but she was curious about who it could be and she opened the door to her room and stepped out into the hall that led to the living area and the front door.

She gave Jack a small smile and nodded as he reached the door and stood back slightly to see who was behind it.

Hatter listened to Alice, taking a couple of hesitant steps inside. Those steps meant being way too close to Jack Heart, but he'd deal. He always did. When fighting on the same side, he was more than tolerable. Now he was back to just...putting up with him, basically.

She hadn't? Well. Well, then. Right. That could mean plenty of things, it didn't necessarily mean that she was ashamed he was there or that he wasn't even worthy of bringing up over dinner.

Oh, sweet... Did they have dinners together? That was awkward to think of. In fact, he really didn't want to consider that. He really should just ask Alice if she wanted the spare room at his place. But she'd mentioned finding a place of her own and wouldn't she want her own independence?

Right. No. The dear king wanted a reply. It only made sense. "Oddly, not that surprised to see you. Seems everyone around knows who you are by now." His tone was low but controlled, as someone who was used to putting up with people he didn't necessarily like. "Though I understand you're the mayor here."

Alice flattened her lips into a line and shook her head a Jack. Oh, as if she'd really had time to sit down and tell him that Hatter was here. They didn't exactly have dinner every night and catch up on each other's lives. In fact, they (or at least she) tried to keep their lives as separate as possible. She wanted Hatter, not Jack.

She turned back to Hatter and tilted her head slightly. "Was there, um, something you wanted to talk about, Hatter? We could go to my room or... somewhere else." She wasn't really up to having a fully fledged conversation with the three of them. Especially not with the testosterone flare ups that were pretty prone to happening between Jack and Hatter.

But it seemed like it was going to happen anyway, considering Hatter was now asking Jack about his position as the Mayor. Oh great.

"Yes," Jack answered Hatter's question. "I am the Mayor. There was an election and the people of the City chose me."

There might have been the slightest bit of pride in there. He had been chosen. Maybe not by Alice and maybe not exactly by the people of Wonderland, but here he had been chosen. He deflated shortly after and looked at Alice.

Jack could take the hint. He gave Alice a pained look, mostly hurt that she hadn't bothered to warn him that Hatter was in the City.

"You two are welcome to discuss whatever needs to be discussed here. I have to run by my office to pick up some paperwork."

He nodded to both and gave each a strained smile before moving toward the door.

Whatever his wishes, Alice was welcome to make her own choices. And he wouldn't be there to get in the way.
