That's An Impressive Costume (Lorne)
There were times when Brennan missed home. She liked going to the Royal Diner and for drinks at the Founding Fathers. She knew there were bars and restaurants she could go to here, but she hadn't really done a lot of exploring since she'd been back and she knew that none of the people she knew would be there anyway. She was feeling nostalgic, though, so she donned her trench coat and hit the sidewalks looking for a diner.

Her boots made small thudding noises on the concrete as she wandered along. Finally, she spied a building that looked promising. She pulled the door open and stepped inside and sidled up to the bar. She didn't want to take up a whole table or booth for herself. That was just silly.

She picked up a menu when it was placed in front of her and immediately ordered a chocolate shake. She was perusing the dinner options when she saw a shadow fall over the bar and then a body settle into the bar stool beside her. It was all in her peripheral, so she didn't get a good look, and since she was not all that great with social interactions, she didn't look up and try to make conversation, either.

She just kept studying that menu for something that sounded good.

Lorne had on his incognito glasses and hat, but he was still Lorne. Nothing he could do about that, and he didn't much want to. Leopards couldn't change their beautiful spots, now could they?

He slid onto that stool and smiled at the guy behind the counter. "Hi, Pete," he said. "How's your wife?"

Pete said she was good, was feeling better.

"Beautiful! Say, can I get one of your magic cups of coffee and the breakfast special?"

His smile was practically audible.

The voice was ordinary and didn't cause immediate concern, so she didn't look up from her menu. But when she saw a flash of green out of the corner of her eye (and it was a vivid green), she glanced over. And then she stopped breathing. And she stared. For a long time. At a green hand.

Those green hands were not normal. She glanced up at the owner and just about fell off her chair. It was a demon. He had horns and everything. Her mouth fell open, completely baffled as to why someone would want to dress up like this. It wasn't even Halloween. At least, she was pretty sure it wasn't Halloween.

Lorne always pretended not to notice if people stared.

At first.

As a courtesy.

They couldn't always help it. He got that. After a minute or two, though, good manners really oughta kick in.

Lorne gave the staring woman a smile. He might have to up the incognito outfit. The hat and the glasses clearly weren't cutting it for her. "Hi, Peaches," he said to her. "And how're you?"

His teeth were so glaring white against the red of his lips. It was remarkable. She wondered how long it had taken to apply the makeup.

"My name is Dr. Temperance Brennan. Not Peaches." She looked away finally, but her gaze was always drawn back.

"I was just admiring the length of time it must have taken to apply the makeup for your costume."

Lorne blinked at her extensively behind his glasses. He could tell that she didn't say what she said to intentionally sound abrupt. Still, he knew that while some women didn't like terms of endearment, very few autocorrected like that so quickly.

Behind the counter, Pete chuckled. He slid Lorne the cup of coffee and put the ticket on the cook's spinning ticket-taker.

"Well," Lorne said, pouring some sugar into his newly-receive cup. He thought about how to proceed. "Dr. Brennan, it's not makeup, and it's not a costume." He shrugged. There were few people in the diner, so he removed the hat and the glasses and set them on the counter in front of him. Pete didn't care, and neither did the cook.

He took a sip of his coffee. "No mus, no fuss."

Brennan gave a dry chuckle. "That can't be true. No one looks like this," and she waved her hand up and down to indicate his appearance, "naturally."

When he removed the hat and sunglasses she gave a contemplative frown. It was very convincing makeup, granted. But she knew that no one looked like he did naturally. It just wasn't humanly possible.

"What is the costume for? Are you in some sort of production?"

Lorne was used to being gawked at, even in LA. It's why he invested in sunglasses and hats, and it was why he'd stayed where he landed after arriving from Pylea. It took a lot for people to gawk in LA, since it was such a zoo, but they still did it here and there.

He sighed, shaking his head and putting his cup down. "I run a cabaret, but I already told you," he continued, brightly, "this is me. It's not easy being green."

If he couldn't convince her, Lorne didn't want to fight with her. It would be exhausting, he could already tell. She might be the kind of person who needed more time here, or with the idea, before she could accept it.

"A cabaret? Hm, that's interesting." And it was. She'd never met anyone who ran a cabaret before. "What sort of shows do you have there?"

She was still skeptical about his makeup and costume, and so she boldly reached over and ran her thumb along his jaw, preparing to have green makeup come off on the pad when she brought it away. But it was clean. That planted the first seed of doubt that perhaps she wasn't able to expect that everyone here was human.

"If this isn't a costume, and it isn't makeup... then what are you?" She was certain that he couldn't claim to be human.

"Karaoke, mostly. Sometimes I sing. Sometimes local bands or musicians play. That kind of thing."

Lorne's eyebrows drew together when she touched him. That was... really forward. He was preparing for a very uncomfortable conversation.

Most people dismissed his appearance as a costume of some kind. In LA, there were some who knew the truth. But generally it seemed most human beings could not really process that he wasn't human and found every way possible to get around that. It seemed his new friend was not most humans. That was intriguing.

He sort of wanted to see what she'd do.

"I'm a demon," he said. "And how're you?"

"I've done karaoke before, it's fun. I'm very good at "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun"." No, she wasn't bashful at all.

She watched his face, frowning slightly. She was an atheist and fundamentally didn't believe in God, Satan, angels or demons. But here was someone who was either very extensively tattooed or truly did have mottled green skin and ruby red lips. And horns. She couldn't forget about the horns.

She reached up to finger one of them, his allowance of her touching his face taken as permission to touch other things. She was only curious.

"A demon. From Hell?" She paused for a minute, her brow furrowing. "I'm fine." Why was he asking how she was? That wasn't the current topic of conversation.

Lorne blinked. He was trying to imagine this woman singing that song. It did not compute.

He sighed.

"No. That's a misconception. I'm sure there are plenty of demons in Hell... just like there's plenty of people. I'm from another dimension."

He knew he sounded more and more like a Twilight Zone episode when he tried to explain this.

But she was a scientist. So maybe this would help. "Super String Theory," he said. "There's more than I can count."

Jack believed in Aliens. He probably believed in Superstring Theory, too. A lot of science was theory based, so she couldn't immediately discount it, but she still balked at the idea of additional dimensions. But then, she had no rational explanation for why she was even here. Wherever here was. It could be a whole other dimension in itself.

"Huh." It was difficult to believe, but so were a lot of things. And it didn't seem like he was trying to pull her leg. So either it was true, or he really believed he came from a different dimension.

"I find you very interesting. What do you bones look like, have you seen the bones of any of your fellow demons?" He probably hadn't seen his own, since they were below the skin. Unless he'd had a terrible break that had broken the skin and torn the muscles.

Lorne damn near spat out the bit of coffee that was in his mouth.

"Well, thank you," he said to the first part, the compliment part, cheerfully. "I AM kind of wonderful. And you're kinda neat, too."

He sat up straighter for the rest.

"I'm going to pretend you mean that in a not-threatening way. Because I'm not getting threatening from you. But mostly, that sounded... kind of serial-killer-y." He sighed. She was a doctor. She meant it scientifically.

"I'd guess my bones look like bones. And fellow demons... there aren't too many of my kind wandering around. Even back home, in L.A. They stick to Pylea. That's the home dimension." He shrugged.

She was beginning to agree that he was kind of wonderful. Not that she would really get that he was being incredibly patient with her interrogations and prying into his personal life. But, she did find him completely fascinating and would have no trouble spending more time with him, if only so she could look at him.

She frowned thoughtfully, "I have never had a reason to kill anyone. Well, I should say I have never needed to kill anyone. But if I did, no one would ever know it was me." She had complete confidence in her ability to commit the perfect crime. She solved crimes for a living and knew the things that got people caught for their crimes. She wouldn't be stupid enough to make those mistakes. "But I'm not a serial killer, I'm a forensic anthropologist, best in my field, and I study bones to help solve crimes."

She was trying to imagine what could make his skin such a color and wondered if his bones truly did just look like bones. But his skull at least had to be different. He couldn't have the ridges and horns without them affecting his skull. It was probably a bit creepy the way she studied him, but she often didn't realize she made others uncomfortable. "Pylea." The idea of other dimensions still didn't sit well with her, but she was coming to realize that there were a lot of things she couldn't explain away.

Lorne smiled warmly at her. She was just awfully literal, wasn't she? In some ways, that was commendable and refreshing.

"That sounds like a really interesting job," he said, with feeling. And he meant it. They didn't have anything like that in Pylea. Trials and the justice system and crimes in general were all fairly... well, there were a lot of axes involved.

He nodded when she said the name of his home planet. "Oh, trust me, this place? Even the being stuck part? WAY better than home."

"It's very interesting," she agreed with a nod. "I enjoy the challenge. And learning about people by looking at their bones." She sometimes had a better relationship with bones than she did with the living. It was a sad commentary on her life, but she just didn't know how to be any other way most of the time.

She gave him a crooked smile and looked curious. "What's it like?" Even if she was having trouble grasping the idea of multiple dimensions, he certainly seemed to believe he was from one of them. And it would be interesting to hear what it was like. "Does it look very different?"

Lorne considered.

"Have you ever been to Medieval Times?"

That was fairly accurate, actually.

"It's kind of like that. But with demons like me instead of humans. Incidentally, being human is a bad idea in Pylea." He made a face that showed his displeasure. "They get treated like slaves or livestock."

He figured there was little to no chance of Dr. Brennan here ending up in Pylea, so he could describe it to her without harm. He didn't know where exactly they were, but he'd bet wormholes worked differently here than in L.A.

"It's rural. Forests, villages, dirt roads. Taverns. And no music. None. No concept of it. The rays of the suns are different. Vampires don't get hurt by sunlight, there. And, um... disappointment and other kinds of emotions are usually conveyed by dance." He raised both eyebrows. "The dances are truly bad."

Brennan couldn't say she had been to Medieval Times, actually, but she knew what it was and the concept wasn't lost on her. Dueling, jousting, sword fighting. But with demons. "I have experience with sword fighting." She said idly. Not for any real reason than to just say it. She looked a little offended at the idea of humans being treated like livestock, but she was appeased by the fact that Lorne didn't seem to be in favor of it.

"It sounds interesting." Not a place she wanted to go, but it was still interesting. She frowned, "No music?" Then she was really confused. "There is no music, but there is dancing. No wonder the dances are bad. How can you dance without music to provide the rhythm?" Pylea sounded pretty terrible, actually. Still interesting, but terrible.

"I gather that you are not a typical demon, then." Not if he seemed discontent with the way things were run in his home dimension. "Were you driven from Pylea?" Was that how he'd ended up in LA, or here for that matter?

Lorne just blinked. That was great that she could swordfight, and he supposed that Dr. Brennan was just that literal. Whatever.

He shook his head. No music.

He chuckled, and it became a laugh.

"Oh, no, honey. I was HATED. And a huge disappointment to my family. They were glad to be rid of me." He sighed. "I wasn't driven out. One day, this passagey thing opened. I found out later the word for it is 'wormhole.' I didn't think twice, I just... went. I mean, nobody understood me. I was the crazy guy who was trying to describe... what music sounded like, because I knew it was missing."

He shrugged.

"I ended up in L.A. And as much of a freakshow as L.A. is, it made a lot more sense for me to be there, so that was that."

Brennan strongly disliked monikers. The only one she tolerated was from Booth who usually called her Bones. Honey, babe, sweetie... they all grated on her nerves. She didn't say anything and it didn't register on her face but she didn't understand why people couldn't just say her name. Even Temperance was better than honey.

But before she could get up in arms over that, he was going on about Pylea and how he was hated. She searched his face while he talked, still trying to get used to the idea that it was his really real face. So he left of his own volition.

"I don't like Los Angeles. It's so busy and the people there are only concerned with how much plastic surgery they can get. It's barbaric." She'd gone out there a time or two to examine remains, but she hadn't liked it enough to ever want to live there.

"It sounds as if it suited your needs, though. Do you miss LA? Would you rather be there than here?"

If anyone disliked monikers, it was just too bad around Lorne. He couldn't help it. Memorably, Angel had to ask him to stop calling him different names of pastries.

Lorne nodded, just slightly, at the appraisal of L.A. She wasn't wrong. And Lorne imagined that if Brennan saw even a third of what he knew Angel and his team had seen, she'd be quite more verbose about the place.

He shrugged.

"This place isn't vastly different for me. I mean, when Kermit the Frog sang 'it ain't easy bein' green,' he wasn't making it up. People are basically the same no matter where you go. And I've still got my club, just like at home." He frowned, just at the edges.

"I'd rather be with the people I care about, though." He nodded at Pete for another cup of coffee. "What about you?"

Brennan watched Lorne. She was still fascinated by his face, so it was hard for her to look away, in all honesty. But it was a very scientific interest. His facial expressions, while mostly normal, were still fascinating. She would like it if he'd lay on a table and let her touch his face and stuff, but even she knew that she shouldn't ask anything like that of him. Especially since it seemed like being green was sort of hard on him, even in this land of strange people.

"None of the people I care about are here. But, I do have a lab and I still get to work. But it's okay. I've been here before and gone home. I think it will probably happen in much the same way next time." She shrugged slightly and finally glanced down at the menu in her hand. She hadn't even bothered to order anything yet. "Can I have the minestrone and a grilled cheese sandwich?" She'd stick with the water to drink that the guy had put in front of her earlier.

"Have you been here a long time, then?" She wondered if he had been in the City the last time she'd been there, but she hadn't seen or talked to very many people so it was entirely possible.

Lorne thought about that.

"A little over a year, maybe closer to two," he said. He shrugged.

"The City gave me my club, same as back in L.A. Only not destroyed, so that's a plus. It's a karaoke bar." He grinned brightly. "The clientele here is a lot more mellow than at home, too."

Not having to read Wolfram and Hart lawyers every day during Happy Hour? Plus.

"You're telling me you left? How... what... how? Why are you back?"
