Happiness is ... (Jensen)
Exploring was a lot easier with the streets in one place, but not nearly as much fun. Annie had to admit that without the movement, she was a little let down. Streets were still in every other universe ever, fictional and otherwise. Moving streets and buildings were unique here, and she missed it though she hadn't been around for very long.

It was so easy to get from point a to point b it was almost frustrating.

She wasn't expecting any kind of excitement for the day, really. She was just going to go to the store and pick up some essential things and then go home. There would be no random encounters because she wasn't going to take very long to do her errands now that everything was immobile.

So when she came across the guy with the tracking system in his hands, she was pleasantly surprised. She walked right up to him and stared at the device.

It was working. It was really working! So far he'd been able to follow his GPS system without even having to look up very often. The cameras were synced and broadcasting nicely. Jensen was grinning like a little girl with a new pony!

Which means that was the expression on his face when the girl showed up right in front of him. Okay, what was it with weirdo females in this town? He lifted his brows at her. "Can I help you?"

She finally looked up to see the guy holding the device. She supposed it had been kind of rude to wander up and not say anything, and then study what was in his hands before even acknowledging him at all.

"Hi," She said, blushing a bit. "I'm sorry. I just saw your GPS and had to get a closer look at it. It's pretty fancy."

She looked down so that he couldn't see her eyes and spoke to the machine. "I'm a little worried though, about overheating."

He blinked some more. Looked around himself then back to the girl with his brows coming down. "What, does this City just populate itself with tech geek girls or something?"

He pulled the GPS a little closer to himself as if he were hiding his Biology notes. "It's a prototype."

"Hm?" Annie looked up again. "What do you mean?" The idea that there were many people here who loved technology was interesting and exciting to her.

She pointed at the device. "That's pretty solid for a prototype. The only thing is that you have a power input wire not fully secured. It goes to the fan? So your fan isn't really working."

"Nevermind." He really wasn't going to try to explain himself to some strange girl making comments on his engineering.

"Huh?" He frowned and turned over the console where sure enough he could hear a small rattle from inside. Meaning: a loose wire. "Son of a bitch."

He stopped then looked a little guilty at the girl. "Uh...I mean...gun. Son of a gun." She looked young, but he couldn't be certain how young.

Grumbling he headed for a bench pulling out a little stylus from the pocket of his cargo pants.

"You can curse all you want. I'm old enough to hear it, and I've heard it plenty." Coming from a war torn future did that to a girl.

"It's not a big thing, really. But I just thought you would want to know so that all your hard work didn't melt down." She felt a little bad about saying something due to the way he'd reacted.

"I'm sorry. My name is Annie."

"Jensen." He gave his name flatly as he began carefully prying off the back panel of the console. "This is only one prototype, and the primary program is on a secure motherboard. I'm not that dumb."

But it really would have sucked for the thing to burn out half way through the testing.

"Thanks fo..wait." He looked up from what he was doing with his brow arched. "How'd you catch it?"

"I didn't mean it like you were dumb. It's a really easy thing to not catch. I just wanted to help."

Annie didn't think this was going very well. All of her interactions with people before this guy had been so wonderful. She wondered if it was her or him.

"Um." The way he was looking at her made her edgy. "Let me ask something first. Do you know what S.H.I.E.L.D. is? If so, how do you feel about their ideals?"

It was him. It was usually him. His social skills weren't entirely...socially acceptable.

Both brows launched themselves towards his hairline as he looked at her flatly. "Uh..."

Okay, Jensen. How much of a geek are you going to admit to being?

"Supreme Headquarters, International Espionage, Law-Enforcement Division: S.H.I.E.L.D.? Or Strategic Hazard Intervention Espionage Logistics Directorate: S.H.I.E.L.D.?"

That big a geek. Okay.

Annie sighed. She didn't know if it was a good thing or a bad thing that he knew the meaning of the acronym. Her gut said bad and to run away very quickly, but she had to remind her gut that she wasn't back home, and there could be a perfectly acceptable reason that he knew.

"The second. The ones that worked to capture and detain mutants for just being what they were."

And possibly exterminate. But she really didn't want to think about that part, considering how close she had come to being in their grasp. Also, it could have been that they wanted her help with something and just hadn't gone about it in a great way. But she kind of doubted it.

"Yeah I didn't like that storyline. Too douchy." He was trying to piece this together but what the puzzle was forming he wasn't sure he liked.

"You saying you're an agent?"

She relaxed a little.

"Me? No! God no." She took a second to size Jensen up and then made her decision. Surely if this guy was trouble, Charlie could take care of him.

"I'm what they hunted. I'm a mutant." Annie nodded toward the GPS. "I'm a cyberpath."

"Really?" He had to put that through his brain to understand fully what she was telling him. It was obvious when it clicked over. It was almost as if the lightbulb was visible as he broke out into a grin.

"That. Is. So. COOL!"

Annie smiled too.

It was so nice how people thought what she could do was really awesome instead of turning sour and deciding to report her. It made her feel like she fit in, which she hadn't done in most of her life.

"Yeah?" She was nodding, because she thought so too. "Anyway. That's how I knew about the wire. I talked to the GPS."

"You...did?" He looked at the console in his lap as if seeing it for the first time and actually looked...worried.

"What did it say? Does it like me?" He looked at her then back to the console, cradling it with his hands. "I'm sorry I called you a punk bitch but you weren't accepting the upload nicely. You can't parcel it out of order or it gets ugly so trust me next time, okay? Don't hate me."

She giggled. There was no helping it.

Her eyes turned the odd static they became when she spoke to the machines and this time she didn't hide it from him.

"It says you're a fathead, but you were right. It does like you, but thinks that this job is entirely too simple."

She returned her attention to Jensen, her eyes going back to normal. "I don't think it quite understands it's purpose right now. That you're creating it for when the streets move again. It thinks this is how things always are."

"Then it will hate me for all new reasons." He got a wry smirk on his face then turned the console over to start working on that panel again. "Fathead. I'd have gone for meathead myself. At least it has the cool factor of being vintage."

He got the panel off and stuck the stylus between his teeth...then had the bad manners to talk around it. "So wha' ah ya doin' runnin' aroun' herah, Ahnnie?"

"Maybe you used some vintage parts." Annie suggested. "You know, I run a store that has computer parts in it. Maybe I might have something you need for a project. You could come by. It's called Fixit."

She sat on the bench beside Jensen to peer over his shoulder. It was always interesting to her to see the insides of things with her own eyes. She could get really detailed images from communicating with devices, but it was a whole new world looking at things plainly.

"I was exploring, but it's not really as fun to explore here now that the streets aren't moving. You just get from one place to where you want to be without any challenge. I had actually just been thinking to myself that I wasn't going to have any random run-ins because of it, but I can't say that anymore."

"Prahbubly." He took the stylus out of his mouth and began prodding the wires to find the loose one. The inside might not be the neatest of designs, but everything had a function. No more. No less.

He tweaked the wire more securely into position, smiled then began to replace the back plate. "Well. Everyone would agree with you that I'm pretty random." He smirked askance at her.

Annie watched him work. She was always a little amazed to see the physical object and know how well it did what it was supposed to do when all it looked like to the naked eye was a bunch of wires and shiny bits.

But it was clear to her that Jensen knew what he was doing. He'd made a very good prototype. Usually people reserved such detail to the final product, but he didn't seem to have left much out aside from maybe a sleek titanium cover and a company logo or something.

"I think everybody here is pretty random. What do you do? Aside from constructing GPS devices, I mean."

"I could tell ya but then I'd have to kill ya." He grinned as he got the panel back on, turned the console over and rebooted it. "Just kidding."

But he wasn't sure if he was supposed to be telling anyone he worked for the League. Then again, it was a City appointed position because of a stupid law suit.

"Ever hear of the illegal antics of the Justice League?"

"I've seen a couple of things in the paper about how the mayor isn't supporting them?" Annie hadn't really researched much into it, she wasn't a very political type. She also thought that if she went sticking her nose in, one side or the other might try to recruit her. But that might have just been holdover paranoia from where she'd come from.

"Are you part of it?"

"The mayor labeled us vigilantes." That should answer both her questions and Jensen smirked unrepentantly. He'd been used to working on the wrong side of the law after his unit and Clay had been branded traitors.

"Well, I can't say I agree with that title." Annie shook her head. "Vigilantes work outside of the law with little or no regard for civilian safety. From what I have read, he just seems annoyed that you didn't ask him for permission."

Of course, Annie didn't know for sure. She had never met the mayor.
