Man Cannot Live on Pizza Alone (Fred)
Oyster food! Fine, he had to admit, he loved it. It had always been a running joke in Wonderland, between he and his colleagues. They'd all heard of it, pizza and pasta and cookies and chicken wings. But to experience it? It was like magic! Well, nothing like magic, really. This ridiculous place was much more like magic. But he dealt with it.

He'd tried pizza with Zee, and it was, admittedly, wonderful. And there'd been other things since he arrived, though he had to admit, pizza was steadily becoming one of Hatter's favorite things ever. Basically, Alice, tea, and pizza. In that order. That didn't stop him from exploring, though!

So when he found himself in front of a little cart advertising the taco things, he figured why not? He'd try anything once. An attitude that had nearly killed him on occasion. Minor details. But they smelled good and if he liked them, he could drag Alice back and make her try them, too. And wouldn't that be brilliant?

Of course, then he'd have to study the person who ordered in front of him to make sure he was doing it right. And he'd have to hope the person ate it there, too, or he'd be completely lost on that, as well.

Fred had decided to get out again. Actually since talking with Jesse, she'd started feeling better. Not perfect, or even happy, just better. Her smile wasn't as bright as usual, and she didn't know when it would be; all she could do was hope. So, looking for a pick-me-up, she went looking for her favorite food at one of her favorite stands.

There she stood, not talking to anyone, not yet. Which for those who knew her, they'd know it was a little strange. She just stood there, rocking ever so slightly as the line moved closer and closer to the tortilla wrapped goodness. Finally it was her turn.

"Yes, I'd like two. Steak with everything, light on the peppers please." She gave the man working the stand a smile of thanks. He recognized her and was already starting her order before she said anything.

"I hope you're having a good day today and that business is going well all things considered." The line suggested the permanent position really hadn't hurt anything. The man just nodded and continued fixing the order.

That sounded easy enough. But the person in front of her had ordered something entirely different. And he really hated when he didn't know what to do. He'd fought against that for years and now? Well, now he felt like an eight year-old all over again.

Well, he was nothing if not social. When the man handed her the meal, Hatter tapped the woman lightly on the shoulder. "Scuse me. Sorry. Yeah." He gave her an almost shy little smile and shrugged. "Can't say I've ever had them with steak." That was what she said she'd ordered, right? Yeah. There. No one had to know! "Any good?"

Oh, he was so going to get called out. He was going to get some comment like 'everyone's had them like this', and he'd have to admit he'd never even tried these tacos, and then he'd get a comment like 'who hasn't tried tacos'?

Of course, knowing Prince Prat was there and wasn't just there but also mayor of the City made him feel a tiny bit better. He wasn't the only one. But Prince Prat had also spent quite a while in Alice's New York first. This was new for him, every thing he was doing and trying, it was all so different. And similar in some ways, but not enough to make him feel comfortable.

The look on Fred's face did suggest it was shocking to hear that he hadn't tried steak tacos, but it wasn't for the reason he might think. She stared at him for a minute then laughed softly, at herself.

"Sorry. Oh, yes, if you haven't, you should try them. You really should. Steak is way better than ground beef, but ground beef will always do in a pinch. Even chicken. Not a big fan of fish, but steak is my favorite. Some people like tofu, but it's okay. There's also mushroom, which isn't bad either. I guess. Yes, you should try steak." She smiled, so excited to see someone who was going to try a steak taco for the first time. She was a little nervous, which almost had her laughing at herself again. Why should she be nervous about something that really wasn't hers? Yet, tacos were so much her go to food, other than waffles or pancakes, that she felt as if they were sort of hers.

"Do you like spicy? You shouldn't get everything on it if you don't like spicy. I like a little spicy, but not burn all your taste buds off spicy. No, that's not for me. But, if you like spicy, I say go for it all." She just beamed. Yes, this was definitely something to take her mind off the not so pleasantness that abounded for the brainy female.

Hatter blinked at first. She talked more than he did! And that was kind of impressive. He really only rambled when he was nervous. Or angry. Or if they were on a subject he was truly passionate about. Tacos weren't something that fit any of those, not exactly. But he supposed he was a bit nervous. Trying so desperately to fit in and all.

"I guess if I'm going to be here a while I can try them all, eventually. Assuming I like this one, I mean. And I'm sure I will," he rushed on, reassuring her that he trusted her recommendation. "Mushroom doesn't sound so bad. Depending on how they're made. And chicken sounds safe. What's wrong with fish?"

He wished he had a go to food. A comfort food. But he didn't, not really, not here. Not yet, anyway! Sooner or later.

Toppings. Right, there were toppings! Like pizza. Pizza did, indeed, have toppings. And he'd learned that pepperoni and mushrooms were wonderful and olives were okay and onions weren't terrible but not his favorite and he did enjoy peppers, but anchovies should've been left in the ocean or wherever they came from.

"Um. Spicy...I think I do spicy. That's the thing where..." Oh, crap. Oops. He was doing it again, sounding stupid. Sounding completely clueless about everything Oyster. He had to think quickly. "Right, of course. The whole mouth on fire? Best thing in the world." Well, no, but it wasn't bad. And he did say he'd try anything once, so why not? "I think I'll do everything," he told the man at the counter. "Like hers. Oh, and, light on the peppers?" he added, glancing sideways at the girl for confirmation of his choice.

"Oh, there's not really anything wrong with fish, but I'm not a big fan of it. Doesn't seem right to put fish on a taco, but people do it all the time. I just don't get it, and there's no one way to serve it. I'd rather have steak. It's a good place to start. If you don't like eating meat, you can go with tofu or mushrooms." Fred just smiled, not at all minding giving a lesson in tacos. She gathered her order and waited.

"Oh, yes, light on the peppers if you don't want to push the spicy. It's not bad, but it can do terrible things to your stomach as well as your mouth." There was a definite nod. "So, how is it you've never had a taco, if you don't mind my asking? I mean I am sure there are ways, there are always ways, but I'm always curious as to how someone hasn't had one. Did you just grow up in a place that didn't have them? Are you from the future? I don't imagine tacos in the future for some reason. Are you from the past? Though you're dressed okay, seem slightly up to date. Then again, you could be from an alternate reality that doesn't have tacos. Wonder how that would work."

The brainy Texan was definitely a talkative type. She just held her order and smiled. Actually she was curious to see how he'd like the tacos, seeing as it was a new experience for him; sometimes she could be a little too curious.

Busted. And he was okay with that. It was time to start dealing with the fact that other people here weren't exactly from normal places, either. Even if these people had heard of Wonderland. And might have heard of him, though it wasn't really him, so he was okay with that, too. Right? Maybe. He'd have to see.

"You're handling all that rather well," he pointed out, smiling a little despite himself. "Past, future, people from other...realities." Considering he'd grown up knowing there was a whole other world besides his own, it wasn't much for him to take in. But her? It made him wonder where she was from, what all she'd dealt with.

"I grew up in a place called Wonderland. Definitely no tacos. Or pizza. Or spaghetti. Lots of things, really. We were deprived of brilliant food!" Yes, he rushed on. Mostly because he didn't want her to have time to stop and think about where he was from. It was just...odd. Let them all think he was from this 'England', with his thick accent and occasionally quaint mannerisms. That was just fine with him. "But I'm looking forward to trying lots of new things. Who knows, maybe I'll give this fish taco a try sometime. Something new and different."

Fred paused as she heard the name. Wonderland? What were the odds? She glanced over at the man and his announcement. Her head tilted; although if she were thinking, it did make sense that he might not have had all that experience with food. Jack had seemed to be new to so much.

"I know someone from Wonderland, maybe not your Wonderland, but I do know someone." Her smile was actually kind of sad, but she didn't let it stay that way for long. "I'm Fred. And trying new things is always good. Fish tacos aren't bad, but they're not my favorite. I would suppose they are someone's or many someones' favorite because they wouldn't stay around if that weren't the case, would they?" She continued to smile; the smile may have even brightened.

"I feel like tacos in general are very good, so I say try as many as you can." She giggled softly, nodding as if she were agreeing with herself. "Though don't take it to the crazy level. You could, and you don't know me from Adam, but it's better to try the regular stuff before you just go out there and try something like mango banana chutney with cabbage and ground alligator - not sure they make that anyway."

Hatter could barely suppress his groan. He was really starting to hate that guy. And that was assuming he didn't already hate him to begin with, which he'd been pretty close to doing. Pain in his side is what Jack Heart was. "The mayor, I assume?" he asked, non-concealed annoyance in his voice. And who could blame him, really? He was an observant kind of guy, and noticed she didn't look exactly happy about it, but oyster emotions were difficult for him to grasp at times. He was getting there. Slowly.

"Hi, Fred. I'm..." He'd been planning on telling everyone it was David, but that was when he thought he'd have to blend in. Alice and Jack both knew him by his name. What to do? "David. But you can just call me Hatter. Everyone does." There, that was easier. She'd know both if it came up. "Who knows, they could even be my favorite. Though I doubt it. Fish isn't really a favorite of mine anyway." Mushroom appealed to him, though. Mushrooms were a big deal in Wonderland.

His eyebrows lifted as she used a phrase he wasn't familiar with, but he found himself grinning anyway. She was cute. Not hot or whatever the terminology was supposed to be. And she was no Alice. But she was definitely cute. "Is alligator actually something you can grind up? I'd heard of them, but not as a meat. Or a taco filler."

If nothing else, she'd made him smile. And he felt that was kind of needed in a place like this.

"David. Hatter." Fred thought that was a strange name. She wasn't exactly ignoring his question about the mayor or mentioning the mayor, but the name caught her attention. "Are descended from haberdashers? Or is that different from a hatter? Did they make grand chapeaus? I'm pretty certain it's not chateaus hatters made." She smiled. She wasn't meaning to tease him about his name, but it was a fun bit of word play.

"I'm sorry. Hatter. Okay, Hatter. And, yes, the mayor." She said softly, almost sadly. "He's a nice guy. He tries to do the right thing, though poor thing seems to have the bad end of it even if he's successful." Becoming mayor had been for the right reasons, only it had ended their relationship. Or more she had let it end their relationship.

"They do. You can grind up the meat. Or fillet it or make it a steak. I've never had it, but I do know people eat alligator meat. I have had rattlesnake. It's okay. I like beef myself." The brainy female nodded, giving him a smile; she liked it when other people smiled. She needed to see other people smile.

Hatter actually smiled a bit sheepishly at her comments on his name. He supposed he could just try and pass it off as a surname, but why bother? Nothing seemed to be quite normal here. "I've gone by it for years. No one really knows when it started. Though I suppose it wouldn't surprise me to find a few hatmakers in my line." Not that he'd know, child of the streets and all.

Oh, no. And she was a Jack fan. Well, no one was perfect. "He's all right, I guess," Hatter offered, without much meaning to his words. Why would he? Hell, why should he? They weren't friends, they had never been friends, and he was willing to bet they never would be.

She was a wealth of knowledge, and he figured he might want to keep her around. Especially if she already knew where he was from and some of the things he knew and didn't know. It couldn't hurt to have someone like that. After all, he couldn't bother Alice with everything. Sooner or later she'd get annoyed and sometimes he really did like to seem like he was completely independent, even in this world. "You know everything?" he teased, smiling generously. And then a taco was in his hand and he gave her a little wink. "Should I just dive in or is there a method to this?"

"It's okay. People give me a weird look about Fred all the time. It's just what I'm comfortable with." She shrugged, waiting patiently. Not for him so much as for the order to be done. She wanted to see how he reacted to the deliciousness of the taco. She tilted her head to a bench not far off.

"I think sitting down first. Not that you have to, but it is your first time." She was only mildly teasing. "And, Jack is all right." It wasn't a demand nor an attack of some sort. It was simply the truth as far as Fred was concerned.

"And, no," she giggled at the question. "I don't know everything. But, I'm something of a taco expert, no not really, but I've tried all sorts in all sorts of places. Even tried to make my own once when I didn't exactly have the proper fixings - it didn't work out so well, but sometimes you just missed the food you really love." She shrugged. "It helps to bring home to you from far away, sometimes."

"I admit, I've never met a woman named Fred before," he confessed with a smile. "But then, where I'm from, most of the people I hung around used code names." Easier to blend in that way. Less that people could shoot back at you. Harder to track down, too.

He definitely didn't want to talk about how 'all right' Jack was. As long as the City stayed standing and people were safe (which he wondered about, given Zee and Jack's position towards her and her League), he didn't really care what Sir Mayor was up to. So he focused instead on the treat in his hand. "Join me?" he offered, nodding to the bench and starting the walk over.

"So I'm guessing where you're from, tacos are kind of a thing?" Admittedly, Hatter wanted to know things. Everything. And if she did know everything, even better for him. He'd never had any formal education but he loved learning new things, and here, where there was so much that was new and different, he loved chatting with people. Taking in their words, their ideas, and their knowledge. "What else do you do back home?"

"I'm the only woman I know whose name is 'Fred,' so it's kind of a singularity, isn't it? Or I am." Fred smiled, settling down on the bench close by. "Thank you." She nodded and started to pull back the foil on one of her tacos.

"Tacos aren't a thing, if you mean a big thing. They're not special. They're common and wonderful. They're not everywhere, but every culture has something like a taco. Some bread type thing wrapped around meat and vegetables. Though I wouldn't call a spring roll or egg roll a taco; think they'd be more of a toquito." Yes, Fred knew food. "Now, you can eat tacos in different ways, but I go for two different ways. One is to undo the foil, wrap the tortilla tight and just eat from one end to the other. But, I think today, I'll go with just peeling the foil back and eating it from one end to the other, peeling back the foil a little more as I go. Usually the weather's much warmer, but today seems like a not so bad day for eating outside."

Fred had been in the City a while, and she had eaten all sorts of things in it. She usually ate those things she was more comfortable with, but she had tried a few of those provided by different worlds. None had captured her heart like her familiar taco and waffle.

"I don't think a thing has to be unique to be special," he told her, smiling. He watched her method, and considered trying it the other way, then decided she had the right idea. For one, the other way sounded messy and as it was his first time and he was out in the open, that didn't seem like such a good idea.

She was right, though. Even they had something like that, breading wrapped around vegetables and meats. Pasties were popular, but he understood some cultures here had those, too. At least it would be something familiar.

The City seemed to be helping all of them along, to feel more comfortable, but not the way it supposedly used to. Hatter really wouldn't know. When he'd first shown up, it had taken too long to get his feet under him and by the time he did, everything had come to a stand still. And, as odd as his life back home might be to some of these people, he still felt more comfortable with things the way they were. He'd have to have a job, soon, he supposed. But that still wasn't as weird as a city that provided for him. All things considered, he could live with foods that were different from home, even if he found ones that they had, too.

Following Fred's lead, he peeled the foil back a bit, revealing the soft, warm wrapping that held the contents of the taco. "Here goes nothing," he said teasingly, then took a small but confident bite. "That's...really good!" he admitted, swallowing and then smiling brightly. It wasn't pizza, but it was definitely brilliant in its own right.

Fred smiled brightly; she was more than happy to see there was another taco convert. More people should have tacos as far as she was concerned. Tacos could make for very happy people if they'd only embrace the particular food stuff. She took a bite of her taco and sat back to chew thoughtfully. It was a quiet type of thing, even over the lettuce crunching.

She peeled back the foil and took another bite, very happy with the moment if not her whole life. She wasn't sure what to make of it all sometimes, and other times she just didn't want to think about it. She would rather eat the taco and being happy in the movement. Yet another bite, and it wouldn't take her long to eat the whole thing, that was why she always got two.

"Very good, yes?" She smiled at him around the eating.

If her thoughts were spoken out loud, Hatter would have to admit he understood her point. Life was complicated, even for a new comer like him. Things should have, could have been very easy for a man who no longer had to fight for his very survival. But they weren't. And overall, he was okay with it, so long as there were moments like this. Chatting with a new friend and trying new things.

New delicious things.

"It's incredible," he told her with a grin. "Fred? Thanks. I appreciate it. Not just..." He nodded down at the foil wrapped treat in his hand. "But, you know. Everything."

Even the street kid from the topsy turvy world could show gratitude when he needed to. It was mostly Alice's doing, but either way.

"I don't know everything." Fred laughed, knowing that wasn't what he had meant. She continued to laugh, shaking her head. "No, no, I know that's not what you meant, but still. I don't know everything. You're very welcome. Glad that your first time wasn't bad. Glad you like it." She smiled, shoving the last bit of her first taco into her mouth. She chewed, looking a little chipmunk cheeks with it.

"Have you had waffles, pancakes, sundaes, pasta, hot dogs, corndogs, hamburgers?" Yes, Fred knew food. Or she was very well acquainted with food. For all that she ate, she stayed rather trim. Then again, the brainy female didn't sit behind a desk all day. She was always moving it seemed.

"Sorry." She blushed slightly. "I like food. A lot. More than I probably should, but it's so yummy. How can you not like it?" She smiled. "Where you're from, what sort of food do you like to eat?"

Hatter had to laugh at that. And, frankly, letting go and just laughing felt good. The place was messed up, that was for sure. But he had Alice (sort of), and he was making friends. It had to count for something. It wasn't the New York he'd been planning on, but it wasn't half bad, either. Okay, it was weird. But not too strange to deal with.

"No," he admitted, his lips tilted in a crooked grin. "Well, yes. I've had pasta, but I understand it can be done lots of different ways? I've eaten quite a bit of chicken. That's something we have back home. Or, well, it's a small bird similar to a chicken. Tastes the same, too, so it seems safe enough."

Not that he was always about staying safe. If anything, he worked hard to do things out of the ordinary, things not considered safe. He'd been doing it his whole life, why change things then? "We have other animals that are different from here. Larger ones, smaller ones. Some are delicious and some are..." He wrinkled his nose with a little smile. "Fish taco worthy. We mix them with greens, sometimes, like your salads, or bake them up in a dough. Some of it is really good, don't get me wrong. But nothing like the stuff you have here." The people of Wonderland had been more concerned with feeling good via tea. Getting pleasure from food was hardly a primary concern for the majority.

"I think every reality has a chickenish type animal. It's kind of creepy to think about, yet comforting too. You can never go wrong with chicken. Or it's highly unlikely to go wrong with. Though I've heard of some people doing things to chickens that's just not right." Fred nodded as if that were really what they were talking about and started unwrapping her second taco.

"Maybe if the City goes back to normal, I can try some of it. I don't think I ever saw a Wonderland type place. Not that I'd know exactly what one would look like. Do they look that different from what's here? Or is it pretty much the same with different names, sort of?" She smiled, more than willing to try something that was not her norm. It seemed only fair, seeing as there was someone trying new things that were from her reality. She liked balance, or trying to find it.

"So, pasta, chicken, and now tacos. You're heading in the right direction for things to try, that's for certain." She smiled at him.
