One More Time With Feeling- Arrival (Open)
Temperance Brennan glanced back at Booth as he headed out of the airport. They'd said their goodbyes. Indonesia was waiting for her to further investigate the interspecies hominid remains that could be a crucial link in the evolutionary chain. She turned and continued toward the terminal where her flight was getting ready to leave. She knew that she needed this break, not only from the Jeffersonian and solving crimes, but from Booth. She wouldn't be getting completely away from the Jeffersonian, though, not with Daisy tagging along. But they were both going for the same purpose.

The flight was long and Brennan read when she wasn't sleeping. Her First Class accommodations treated her well and she was comfortable. But she was relieved when she finally felt the plane touch down. She gathered her belongings and met Daisy at the door. She stepped out of the plane, fully expecting to set her foot down on the tarmac, but instead, she stepped out onto a concrete sidewalk with high rise buildings on all sides.

It was not Indonesia, but it was familiar. She sighed in frustration, not knowing how long it would be this time, and if she would ever get to examine those remains in Indonesia. She had her carry-on suitcase with her, and as she patted her pockets, she found that a set of keys, a bank card and a cell phone had appeared. It seemed the City had her again.

The City also seemed intent on not letting her stay in one place for long, for soon someone else was stepping out onto the sidewalk behind her, nearly stumbling into the luggage and the woman attached to said luggage. Charlie Crews didn't usually stumble over people or things, and thankfully he quickly righted himself before causing too much trouble or damage.

"Excuse me." There was no anger or accusation. There was only a slight apology in it as he came to stand near the woman and her things. He looked up at the buildings then at her.

"New in town?" It wasn't that he was used to being a welcome wagon, but the luggage suggested something was different. The people of the City rarely bothered with luggage.

Temperance turned when she felt her luggage jostle. There were people on the street so she wasn't surprised by the new presence, but she tugged her luggage in closer to her and nodded. "That's alright."

"You could say that. I was just getting off a plane, but this isn't the tarmac." She gave a little bit of a sigh and looked him over. "I have been here before, however."

She was annoyed by that fact, mostly because she was looking forward to studying the remains in Indonesia. Her stay in the City previously had been pleasant enough. It wasn't the City that bothered her, just the timing.

"My name is Temperance Brennan. Who are you?"

"Charlie Crews." The detective offered his hand; he hadn't added the "detective" part even though the badge for the City Police shined as soon as he moved his arm just right. Sometimes it was important, sometimes it wasn't. At the moment it wasn't.

"You've been here this street, or here the City?" He smiled at her. "Would say the City because there's no plane around here. A spaceship or two in the park, but no planes. Unless you mean here, as a state of being, then we've all been here before, even when we haven't."

Brennan wasn't sure why she found it comforting that the man before her was wearing a badge that looked rather like a law enforcement type. Nevertheless, she did. She glanced up at it to the man's face and gave him a tight smile. "You're a cop?" She gestured to the badge and then put her hand back on the handle of her carryon.

"The City. Probably the street, as well. That's difficult to say." She mirrored his smile, remembering vaguely that there were spaceships. It would take time to get used to this place again. But at least she still had a lab. Or at least she hoped she did.

His last comment, however, rather lost her. She was trying to decide how much of an argument she wanted to start up with a stranger, to tell him the laws of physics couldn't put a person in a place they hadn't been before. Easier to let it go, she reasoned.

"I'm a detective for the City Police, yes." Charlie looked down to see if his badge was showing. He smiled when he saw it before looking up at her again. "I didn't know people came back. Then again, we never really leave places we've been? We take bits of them with us wherever we go.

"So, Ms. Brennan, you're lucky you came with your own luggage. At least you don't have to worry about clothes." He continued to smile. Charlie was given to smiling. "I don't need to explain to you that you're not dead, you're in a new place, and the streets, buildings, everything moves. This is new for me. Thank you." He bowed slightly in thanks.

She furrowed her brows, she started to shake her head and tell him that he was wrong, that it was impossible to take a place anywhere. But then she wondered if he was speaking in the metaphorical sense, that each place they went to left an imprint on them.

Carlie had a habit of smiling a lot, and it unnerved Brennan slightly. She didn't know many people who smiled as much as he did. Even stranger was that it compelled her to smile in return.

She shook her head, "No, I am familiar with the situation." She tilted her head a bit, her brown curls sweeping her shoulder. "Have you never welcomed anyone to the City before?"

"I've welcomed people to the City." Charlie nodded; the smile had faded a little, but no so much that it was completely gone. He looked away to watch the City as if something might happen. Anyone who'd been in the City for very long knew that something just might happen if one stood still long enough. He looked back at her as if he'd decided something.

"I've never welcomed someone back. This is a first." He nodded, smiling. He was rather certain the people he'd met who were new had never been there before, or if they had, they certainly hadn't acted like it. This woman was clearly different in that aspect, and he appreciated it.

"What is it you do in the City? As you're back it is now a do rather than a did." He looked like he wanted to know the answer, and the detective usually did want to know the answer to a question he'd placed.

She nodded. That would make sense. But she wondered if she was some sort of exception. Had the City wanted her back that badly? And if so, why? She was an excellent forensic anthropologist, but beyond that she had nothing to offer. There was the possibility the City was in need of her once more, but it was likely she would never know why she was brought back.

"I am a forensic anthropologist. I study bones. I had a lab here before, and it is my earnest hope it is still here." She glanced around. Finding her way to her apartment was going to be interesting. She'd forgotten how often the streets and buildings moved.

"Has there been much crime?" Part of her hoped there was, so that she would have something to do. But the other part of her, the one that had been relieved to leave the Jeffersonian behind for a year, hoped there wasn't.

The answer to his question certainly seemed to interest the detective. He hadn't been expecting an answer that was in any way connected to his own profession. Sometimes life did provide very good opportunities.

"Yes." The smile faded completely. "Murders mainly. Have reason to believe there all the same person, or people. Once you've been vetted, perhaps, you'd like to have a look. My partner and I could use another set of eyes that might see the picture a different way. Give us 3D on it."

Well, it was three different dimensions if each person represented a dimension or view after all. He looked around then at her, while he pulled something from his pocket.

"My card, Ms. Brennan." He'd have called her doctor, but she never emphasized that title.

Brennan's lips flattened at that admission. She had evidently been hoping for something more to the contrary. Going to Indonesia had meant getting away from murder and crime. And here she was, getting right back into it.

"I would like to help, yes. I'd like to see if my lab is still here, first, however." He wasn't pushing her to hurry, though, she had time to find her apartment and search for her lab.

"Doctor Brennan," she corrected automatically. Booth and Angela were really the only ones who didn't call her that, it was what she was used to. She took the card and read it, then pocketed it.

"I'll be in contact once I've settled in."

"Understandable. No one wants crime, at least usually." Charlie nodded; he really did understand. He was a cop after all. Crime meant he had a job, but that didn't mean he had to like it.

"Of course, Dr. Brennan." He didn't seem to mind the correction. He just smiled and nodded again. "I look forward to your call. You'll be fine finding your way? You've done this before, but even if you've done it before, it can be new again. Just like riding a bike."

Brennan nodded, "I'll be fine. It isn't as if you would be able to show me the way any better, what with the streets and buildings shifting at any given time." But she nodded her thanks for his concern.

"I will be seeing you, Mr. Crews." She gave him a tenuous smile and another nod, then turned and crossed the street, moving toward what felt like the right direction.
