A sunny day (Beauty)
Eric was annoyed after his encounter with the human who liked to stab him with silver. But even that couldn't spoil the general mood he had still at being able to walk in the sun. To see the bright day.

He found himself in the park again. This time with no particular goal in mind. He just wanted to be in the day and see the grass as green as it could be. Look at the flowers soaking up rays of energy and nourishment. See the humans playing because they were so sure no evil could touch them in such glorious conditions.

The Viking had a bit of a soft spot for daylight activities, he was discovering. So much that he saw during the night was completely different. It was like being a child again. Or a brand new vampire, seeing things for the first time with the new eyes, hearing the world with the new ears.

And there was a true freedom now. Having one less restriction placed on him. Of course, he had to share blood with Baba to achieve this, it was not a freedom that came completely free. But he was willing, and she was willing. She was willing enough to continue to share with him often, he had not had to worry about the sun once since they'd began this journey, and didn't think that he was going to have to worry about it for some time. She seemed to enjoy seeing him in the daylight as much as he enjoyed walking in it.

If he could get rid of the pesky problem with silver, he could truly be a god. Unfortunately, he saw no way around that.

Eric found a bench sitting out in the open, not covered in the shade of trees like most he passed. He sat and stretched his lengthy body, letting his head bend over the back. Soaking in sun on all his exposed flesh, much like a cat in a sunbeam.

Ah, no. Eric thought his question was answered just by that blush. He didn't think that Lestat would ever be able to live down what he'd said to Beauty, even though he was also sure she would never speak it aloud. It was more than a little funny to him.

He was glad when she sat again, that he hadn't scared her off completely with his crude comments. When he'd been truly young, there hadn't been such need for propriety, and now that he was old, he just didn't care. Sometimes he forgot that there were people in the world who lived by such rules.

He laughed. "We aren't silly housewives." Eric told her. "Usually a vampire is quite proud to tell you their age. It's a badge of honor. Proof that we can survive. It's not easy being what we are. Eighty percent of us don't make it past our first year. So yes, I will tell you how old I am. Or thereabouts. I was born over a thousand years ago."

A thousand years! Beauty couldn't actually imagine that number. It was so great that she couldn't assign a value to it in her head. She wasn't sure she'd ever counted a thousand anythings before -- not even a thousand stars. (And why did stars remind her of Eric? They did, all the time.)

She took a breath - and the cool air filled her lungs with sharp ache - then let it out slowly. As slowly and as gently as she could ask, she continued her delicate but eager interrogation: "Mssr. de Lioncourt says that sometimes it's hard to remember what it was to be human. Do you remember? Do you miss it? ... Do you hate us?"

"It's very hard to remember what it was to be human." Eric agreed. "I think Lestat might miss it. I do not. I recall my human life perfectly, as I recall the rest of my life."

He paused for a moment to ponder her last question, give it real thought. "I don't hate humans. But I don't want to be one, either. Humans are weak. They break. They die. They are worried about things that don't matter. I have never missed being a human, never lamented the loss of my mortality like some have. I enjoy being what I am, very much."

Eric nodded. "Lestat does too, but there is a part of him, I think, that is still enthralled with the human existence. I don't normally associate with them at all, myself."

"And yet," she said, smiling at him and leaning forward. Her voice dropped as if to whisper a confidence. "Here you are with me."

It was a very strange thing indeed, she thought, that she had managed to form acquaintances with not one but two vampires in the City now. Stranger still, neither of them seemed to want to harm her. In fact, both were deliberately not harming her, regardless of the fact that all her studies on their type led her to believe that they were ravenous, moral-less monsters incapable of behaving in a manner appropriate for civilization.

Eric still made her stomach twist -- but not nearly so terribly as he had before she'd sat down at this bench. And that was something.

"I'm very glad I stopped to see you, Eric," she said quietly - but for the softness, the words were no less more powerfully felt.

An odd thing to say. Eric wasn't exactly sure what she meant by it, that she was glad that she'd stopped to talk to him. The way she said it implied something. But what?

"Sometimes," eric admitted, "Individuals interest me. A human might catch my eye."

Most of the time, though, it was with the thought of food on his mind, or -as in the case of Pam- a child. Neither were thoughts here, though.

"Have your fears of me eased?"

It was probably not a good sign, she thought to herself, that she was flattered that he found her interesting. She didn't think there was much interesting about her, but she didn't mind that a vampire....

A vampire thought she was interesting.

She truly should mind.

The question he gave her was fair -- and more than apt. She smiled faintly. "They have," she said, and her tone was almost one of wonderment. "And I'm very grateful that I have nothing to fear from you. But I.... I hope you don't think it vain to ask, Monsieur: Why have I caught your eye?"

She was blushing again. It was a very vain question. She shouldn't have asked it.

Eric considered her question very carefully. The answer didn't come to him as quickly as he might have liked. In fact, it didn't swim into his mind at all. He could answer that for any of the others that he encountered and enjoyed.

But her?

"I do not know. Yet."

He made it very clear with that last word that he would know.

"Well," she said, matter-of-factly, feeling a little bit less embarrassed with his thoughtful answer, "I'll be pleased to know when you discover it, sir." Maybe Eric could explain why Mssr. de Lioncourt was equally.... ah, but that wasn't fair. She'd found Lestat herself, and he was simply too gentlemanly to have turned her down when she was in need.

The chill of the air was noticeable, now that her heart wasn't threatening to beat its way through her chest. She took a breath, then slid herself off the edge of the bench. "Thank you," she said after thinking about how to leave. "I am grateful for your promise to me. I don't take it lightly. Enjoy the sunlight, sir!"

And with a curtsey and a polite smile, she turned back to the walkway.
