Blood Ties (Baba)
Life was actually going smoothly, for once. Logan realized that he'd better not get used to that. After all, nothing went smoothly for very long. Especially not his life.

But for the moment, he had his job and he had Veronica. Things were going fairly well at Caritas. Even with the arrival of a new bar in the City (yes, Logan actually kept an eye on these things int terms of competition potential now) business at the karaoke bar was still going well.

He was actually taking time for the moment to study. Which meant holing up at a nearby Starbucks with coffee, his laptop and its wi-fi connection and trying to keep himself from getting distracted by gamefaqs.com while he worked on a paper for one of Business classes.

Bored was certainly not what the crone needed to be. Bored and needing more ingredients, even worse. She was on the prowl for more blood. She needed it, and she had yet to find anyone who really fit what she wanted. The City's children were only so helpful, and she needed one of these less than captives to fill her need. Henry, Rufio, Eric, the god, they were all very useful, but she needed someone who had no power yet had the heart. The heart was always a good thing to have in the blood.

She knew of only a few that fit the above, and she was now hunting one of them. Her lips pulled slowly to a smile as she found him. It had taken some doing without the blood or even hair, nothing to work from, but there he was in his mundane little world, going about his mundane little life. He was a Mundie.

She walked into the coffee place, though the coffee was nothing like what they served for Aladdin. That was real coffee. This was watered down for the masses offal. She brushed along, touching this person and that; she wanted to cause just a little confusion, but nothing quite yet. She was prepping the area.

"Why, hello." She smiled oh so innocently.

Logan looked up and tried not to jump. He still didn't know exactly what it was about the tiny young woman, but she gave him the creeps just a little bit. All the same, he gave her a nod.

"Hi Red."

He attempted to turn his attention back to his laptop, hoping she'd get the hint that he wasn't in the mood to chat.

"Hello, Logan." The crone quickly closed the gap, not there was much room between them. She settled into the other chair at the table. "How have you been?"

She might have caught the hint, but that didn't mean she had to abide by the boy's wishes. No, she sat right down and smiled. Her hands rested on the table top, her feet tucked sweetly under her chair.

"It's been a while, hasn't it?" Her head tilted just so. The crone was in the mood to play a little, just a little wouldn't hurt.

Logan bit back a groan as Red took a seat. he gave her a tight smile.

"I suppose it has. Guess time flies when you're having fun."

Just a little snark there, though his next question veered toward more polite territory. Perhaps if they exchanged a little bit of chitchat, she'd go on her way.

"How have you been?"

"Oh, busy. Getting ready for the next storm. It was pretty bad, wasn't it? That storm? You didn't get it too bad, did you?" The crone's eyes were wide as she asked her questions, yet there was still a hint of smile on her lips as she watched his face. She glanced to the side as a couple of young women laughed a little louder than the small area required.

"Oh, someone's having a good time. Are you having a good time?" Her brows lifted a little, still the questions. Her hands remained on the table top. The girls laughed again, yet whatever they were laughing at wasn't as funny to another set of people. Not happy at all.

Logan raised an eyebrow.

"There's going to be another storm? Was it on the weather forecast or something?"

Logan didn't really bother to watch the news, though he trusted that if there were predictions of another storm on that same level, he'd hear about it. Then again, the first storm hadn't been predicted either.

"Oh, there's always a chance that a storm could rush in. You never know what might happen. Especially, here, right?" The crone smiled.

"You never know who may go missing, and who may show up." Her eyes widened, and she was about to say something more when the laughing girls didn't laugh so much as yell. Baba didn't look quiet yet. She seemed to be waiting.

Apparently the girls were laughing at another patron. Said patron decided to make some comment back. It was cruel to play on the young women's fears and insecurities, but it really was the easiest way to start a little chaos in a public space. Just a nudge in the right place seemed to be all it took.

"Oh, my. They do not sound happy."

Logan raised an eyebrow and glanced over at the group. It seemed like mean girl stuff-similar to the type of things he might see in Neptune High. He turned his attention back to Red and shrugged. He didn't want to get involved with girl drama if he could help it.

"Suppose not."

He turned his attention back to his laptop. Perhaps Red would get distracted by whatever spectacle was about to happen and he could get back to work.

"What is it you're looking at?" The crone wasn't ready to go elsewhere quite yet. She wanted something, and she couldn't get it quite yet. Not without being overly obvious. She could wait for just a little longer before attacking, if it came down to that.

The altercation was slowly growing, pulling in a few of the onlookers. The crone glanced over, but for only a moment. Logan still had all her attention for now.

"Homework," Logan grunted.

He heard the shouting nearby. He couldn't help but have his eye drawn to whatever was going on. It was hard to see over the crowd that was starting to form around the girls, but Logan was pretty sure he heard someone shout out 'chickfight!'

Hey, he was a guy. He couldn't help if that sort of thing captured his attention.

"Oh." That really wasn't overly exciting. No matter how well the crone could act, there was little to make her interested in something so...mundane.

"I do hope no one gets hurt." She peeked over at the growing circle. Some of the people who worked in this usually quiet even if it was overpriced and overcaffeinated place were trying to break it up. Someone took a tumble nearby as the circle opened to let the woman out from the center. Her clothes were ripped, and she looked like a wild thing, especially when she picked herself up and tossed herself back into the mass.

"Oh, my."

Logan smirked a little bit at the lack of excitement from Red. Homework wasn't exciting, and if he was lucky he would bore her into walking away.

Though what was going on nearby was anything but boring.

Logan looked over at it and almost did a double take.

"Holy shit. Someone should stop them."

Someone. Not him. There was no way he was getting in the middle of a vicious girlfight.

"Doesn't look like anyone will." The crone tsked; there was something close to a blood curdling scream from within the mass of bodies. Whatever was happening had (d)evolved into an all in as one rather large fellow yanked out of the crowd and tossed her onto a nearby table. "Perhaps someone should call the authorities."

She hadn't moved. She looked as if she weren't going to move. Her hands rested on the table top, her eyes resting on the young man across the table from her. How much blood would she need? She'd prefer a vial, or even a jar, but just a little bit could work. A little on a handkerchief or napkin.

A plastic cup full of ice and coffee came flying their way. The crone leaned back, almost rolling her eyes. This would have been so much easier if the damn boy had gone into a bar, not one of these ridiculous shops.

Logan was a little surprised at the calm that Red seemed to be exhibiting. He let out a small growl as a large man grabbed one of the women and tossed her onto a table.

Girlfighting he would stay out of, but a man hurting a woman who was so much smaller than he was? That was not okay in Logan's book.

He brushed away the memories of his parents that it might have brought up and pushed his way into the crowd. He grabbed the large guy from behind and attempted to subdue him.

"Okay buddy, time to go," he said in a firm but even tone.

That didn't work so well. The thuggish man got out of Logan's grip and turned to punch him squarely in the nose.

The crone wasn't going to stop the punch from happening. A broken or even popped nose, or a split lip would give her just enough blood. She grabbed a few napkins only after ripping a length of material from her skirt. It didn't look great, but with fashions these days it worked. Plus, how many people were going to question the little woman on her fashion sense?

She just waited. Maybe she willed the thug to throw the punch, or maybe she merely hoped it would. But the guy was certainly going to hit Logan if the reluctant hero didn't do something soon.

Logan wasn't fast enough to stop the blow. He reeled from the impact. He clutched his nose, which was now bleeding.

"Goddamnit," he said, and threw a punch of his own.

He might have been smaller than the guy but Logan had been in enough fights to know what he was doing, so he did manage to hit the guy hard enough to make it hurt a few times.

The crone smiled ever so slightly as there was blood. She was more than happy to see that she would have what she wanted. The boy was the heroic type, even if he refused to accept it. Interesting.

She finally coughed softly to catch the thug's attention. It wasn't easy, but he finally realized someone was watching him. The crone pointed at the person who'd been waiting behind the fighting men to hit the thug over the head with one of the bottles full of coffee flavoring. Hazelnut it looked like. Baba yanked the reluctant hero Logan out of the way, holding up the skirt which now looked more like a handkerchief with napkins to add their absorbing power.

"That was some hit."

Logan felt someone yanking him from behind. He was surprised when he heard Red's voice. She was apparently stronger than she looked. Or something. His vision was swimming.

He wasn't quite sure if she meant his punch or the punch he'd taken, but all the same his lips cracked in a slight smile.

"Thanks."

He felt like hell, but he'd been in worse fights. Veronica was probably going to be pissed that he had gotten into yet another fight, but maybe he could elicit at least some sympathy from her.

Little women were usually always stronger than they looked; it was part of being a small woman, wasn't it? She smiled softly at him, dabbing his lip with the torn material, but soon she pulled it away, secreting it somewhere once she'd seen that there was indeed blood on the fabric.

"Here," she grabbed up a cup of iced something, tipping it out mostly to get to the ice which she wrapped in the napkins. It was not the best fix, but it would do.

"Oh, I think he's waking up, and is that the sound of the local authorities?" The noise of the coffee shop brawl might have masked an outside sounds. "Perhaps leaving would be a wise idea."

Logan was still a bit stunned, but he did manage to nod. He vaguely noted that the ice felt good against what was sure to be a nasty bruise soon.

"Leaving. Good idea."

He managed to get to his feet and started toward the door to the coffee shop.

The crone didn't say anything about his getting his stuff; he would probably realize that he was leaving his things behind. She wasn't there to look after him after all. She had gotten what she wanted.

"You were truly amazing in there." She finally spoke as they got out of the building; her lips pulled into a smile. "You may be a hero after all, no matter how much you don't want to admit it."

She started to step away. "Be careful. Keep that ice on it. Good job today."
