When the coffee turns...(Jensen)
(Continuation of this happy meeting)

The look didn't fade as Fred heard what was only a partial apology if it was one at all. She looked at him a little longer before walking on. She'd lost her appetite, which was saying something. The two men who she thought were pretty special and good had turned into real asshats as she'd heard Dean call some jerk he'd had to deal with once. They had forgotten completely what it meant to be good guys. She knew that good guys didn't always have to be nice, soft, fluffy puppies, but they had turned into real jerks. And, over something completely out of either of their hands.

"It wasn't right. What you did. It wasn't right. Not that what he did was right either. What y'all said, not so much what he did. It's not like he had a choice not to put the statement out. It hurt, but you don't say things like that. You don't say things like that to people who could help you." She wasn't going to cry; she refused to cry. She wouldn't do it.

She was starting to wish she had worn a jacket because she wanted to wrap something around herself, nice and tight. She opted for her arms for a little bit as she walked. She stopped once more; a few tears were already going down her cheeks.

"You two should be friends or pleasant acquaintances because he could make things very difficult. I know you could make his life uncomfortable, too. And what you said. That last part. That was really mean. I was there. I was standing right there when you said it. You don't say things like that when people are standing there. I was okay with it, you know that? Or maybe I wasn't okay with it because they didn't think I was his girlfriend or pretty enough to get a picture with him, but that's not really the point. The point is I was okay with the mix up because he wasn't really with her. And then you go and say that. Like I wouldn't care if you would say something like that. I do." Fred just looked at him, waiting for something more than an apology possibly. She didn't how he could even start to make a difference in what was said and what she felt, but she knew that she was hurt.

He listened to her, let her get everything out. She needed to talk sometimes, and he was always fine with letting her ramble. But those tears had to go! He wanted to reach out and brush them away but he thought he might get punched if he tried. And he was beginning to feel pretty conflicted himself by the time she was done.

"Wait." His brows came down but more in a wounded frown expression than just a frown, his hands pushing into his jeans pockets. "Are you defending your ex-boyfriend and telling me I need to play nice with him?"

"Why wouldn't you? He didn't do anything to me. He didn't do anything to you." Fred didn't like seeing the frown. She didn't like seeing it on anyone, but Jensen's sad face upset her a little more than others perhaps.

"You could have kept it completely professional. If you've got a problem with that statement, fine. Have a problem with his statement. It did target you and everyone else, but you don't bring up things like Zee and him in a picture. You don't bring up scandals that were created by the press because they're too stupid to even bother asking." Her accent was getting a little thicker. She wasn't just sad and hurt; she was angry for so many reasons.

"That's something that was tween him and me not you and Zee." She paused for only a moment to recognize the rhyme, but it really wasn't the moment to smile at what she'd done there. "What does it matter if he is my ex-boyfriend if the problem you have with him is his stand on vigilantes?" She wasn't getting it at all.

"He brought up you molesting me but you have a problem with me retaliating when I'm on the receiving end of a personal attack?" He sounded more petulant than defensive. Even his body posture was hunched in. Clay and Pooch would be looking at him as if he were a pod person to hear and see this.

"I wasn't the only one going on the tit for tat, honey." Oops. He hadn't meant for that to slip out but his feelings were getting hurt too. "I'm not just going to take it. Not from some stuffed shirt politician who talks out of his ass and doesn't know a good thing when he has it."

"I walked away from both of you." Fred didn't point back to the spot she left where this horrible scene that could possibly end up somewhere for the world to see had happened. She didn't care if people knew she wasn't perfect, and she knew her friends weren't perfect; but, she didn't think the world needed to know that the mayor was having a row with some guy his ex was with at the time. She also didn't think that it would bode well for how people saw Jake if he were the type to get into public altercations.

"Both of you. You're just getting the attack because you're here." She knew she should yell at them both, and she'd probably have words with Jack later. Jake was here. "You followed." Which she did appreciate it; the hint of smile showed even if she was still worked up about other things. Then he mentioned the "good thing."

"What good thing?" The only good thing Jack no longer had was her, and she wouldn't count herself as a good thing. She was certainly confused.

"Well yeah I followed." He was a little baffled as to why she might think he wouldn't. "You were upset." Which was all the reason he needed to turn his attention away from Jack Ass to solely on her. She was important.

Of course then she asked her question and he looked even more befuddled. "You." That definitely held a note of duh.

"Oh." Fred felt like she'd been hit in the breadbasket for that. With a shake of her head, she turned as if she were going to walk away again, but then thought better of it. She turned back to him, lips parting as if to say something.

"He did try." Her voice was very small, and now she wasn't looking up at him. "He's not the bad guy; I am."

The vigilante business was forgotten. She'd gone from being the indignant angry woman to being the very bad guy gal in this situation. If she was the reason these two fellows who may not be drinking buddies could have appreciated each other a little somehow, or maybe respected each other a little, couldn't get along, she was a very bad person.

"Hey." He stepped closer to her reaching out to touch her chin with his fingers to encourage her to look up at him. "I don't care who broke it off, you or him. I'd have fought before letting you go. You would have had to taken out a restraining order against me to keep me from sending you things, singing at you, whatever it took. I don't see him doing that." And he'd be in a position to know since he tries to keep track of her these days.

The mayor's statement about vigilante's hadn't been forgotten. It was still a sticking point for him. He thought Jack had been WAY out of line with that.

"He's the mayor. He can't." Fred did look up then rolled her eyes a little. "He sent me flowers everyday. He did a lot for a man I never slept with." She didn't think twice about letting that slip. It was a great deal for a man who'd just become mayor and hadn't done much in the way of normal dating.

"I don't want to be why you don't like him, okay?" Her hand claimed his for a moment to pull it down from her face.

He offered her a small smile as he squeezed her hand. "Sweetheart his stupidity in letting you go is what started it, but that ridiculous statement sealed the deal. I'm not going to lie to you and suddenly be nice to him, but I can keep my opinions to myself," and any futher retaliation he had formulating in his head kept to when she wasn't there to see.

Fred didn't correct him. Jack had never let her go, not until that night. Maybe. She wasn't going to ask him what he'd been doing that whole time because she couldn't be honest about what she'd been doing. Not that she did anything bad, but still.

"You can have your opinion. I just wish you could be friends. Everyone should be friends." It was a little childish, her lips formed a hint of a pout. "Although he does have a point, it is odd for me to be out with the guy who sued me. Not that you really did sue me, but you did. Sometimes I could really kick the City in the shin. If it had a shin, it doesn't. I don't think it does."

He took a step closer to her, his smile lifting a little as he tugged on her hand. "Okay, maybe it makes me a bad person, but I can't be friends with the ex-boyfriend of the girl I'd like to have as my girl." He shrugged a shoulder impishly. "Maybe it's a testosterone thing. And I'm glad the City made me sue you. Otherwise we'd still hate each other."

"I didn't hate you." Fred was blushing and laughing almost bashfully. "I could have hit you a few times because you were being a bit of an ass, but I didn't hate you. I don't hate...often." There were times Fred could get very angry and want to lash out, but it took a good bit to get the brainy female to that point.

"Why can't you be friends with an ex? Sometimes they're all you've got. You may need him. JLC may need him one day. It'd be good to be a little nice to him." She gave him a slight smile, and with a sigh, she turned to start walking again. Just a little tug of his hand for him to come along.

"Or not so obviously hostile." She wasn't condoning any clandestine action he might take, but she may have been suggesting he not get caught. Getting caught was usually a bad thing.

He went with the tug easily enough, walking with her. What she asked of him made him groan and drop his head into a roll as if she were asking him to clean up his room.

"I won't go looking for him," physically, "how's that?"

Fred gave him a look. She knew that he had other ways of finding people, of looking for them.

"Do not...what's the way to say it...do not confront?" Her brows furrowed as she tried to think of the phrase she wanted. "Do not instigate? Do not initiate? Don't go doing anything. Next thing you know you'll be in jail cause the City wants you locked away instead of in a tower." She laughed softly. "You're Rapunzel."

Boy she really was trying to cover all of her bases. If he wasn't careful she'd get him to promise something so that even if he did run into Jack and the fuckwad threw the first punch Jensen would end up the bad guy.

But then she made the joke and he grinned at her, pulling on her hand so she'd stumble into him. He'd catch her of course, around her waste. "Am not."

Fred did indeed stumble, her body landing right where he wanted it apparently because there was his arm around her. She looked up at him, brows raised in question. It was nice being close to someone. Fred did like physical contact, more than most might have known. Then again, going so many years without it could have been a good reason to take what she could. She leaned a little more into him that necessary.

"Are too. You're in a tower, kept away to be safe, and you can only get up with special codes." She laughed again.

That was...really distracting, but really nice at the same time. He slid both arms around her as he smiled down at her.

"Yeah but I really don't have the hair for it." He slid one hand up her back to tug gently on the end of her hair. "You on the other hand..."

"Am allowed to come and go as I please because I am not locked away." Fred swatted at the hand tugging at her hair. She shifted in her lean against him to get a little more comfortable. Her hand lightly pressed at his stomach, his flat strong stomach. She squirmed slightly to get free to start walking again.

"I really am hungry." Her hunger was return. "I can come and free you." She giggled, shaking her head.

He sighed and went with her but kept a hold of her hand, giving it a little swing. "Okay. Let's feed you. Whatever you want. I owe you that much."

"Whatever I want..." Fred looked up at him, and for a very brief moment, innocence would not be what was looking up at him. The brainy female could actually tease in ways that aren't so good clean fun. She squeezed his hand and turned to pay attention to where she was going.

"Tacos. Can always go with tacos. Or there's pancakes." Fred smiled, quite happy to think of all the food they could actually get in the City. "Oh, waffles? Fries? Hot dogs?" She could put away a good bit of food when she wanted to.

That look on her face just about made him trip over his two feet. That was....hot! It was enough to make him miss her going through some of her menu preferences but he obviously caught some of the details.

"Sooo...pancake tacos?"

"Hmm." Fred had to stop as she thought this one through. Pancake tacos actually sounded interesting, very interesting. She thought through how one would make a pancake taco. "Eggs, cheese, sausage all wrapped in a buttermilk pancake with a little syrupy salsa of berries?"

She was thinking through it, not sure if what she came up with was the best way to go. She paused at the curb, only to step down and cross the street without really checking to make sure the way was clear.

"Waffles are good. Chicken and waffles aren't bad, but I never quite got that one." She squeezed his fingers.

His arm was suddenly around her waist and he hauled her back to the curb just as a car horn blared out at them. Geezus!

His chest was heaving a bit with his heart hammering behind it from the adrenaline rush of keeping her from getting run over, and he didn't seem inclined to let her go just yet.

"At this rate I'm thinking we go back to the tower and order delivery. Going out in public is dangerous."

Fred didn't exactly yelp as she was pulled back. It wasn't that she didn't look; she just expected the City to keep her from getting killed. It was a little silly to think that, but that was how her brain worked. She was snuggled once more against him, her eyes narrowing at the now empty street.

"You're sounding a lot like Rapunzel. Public is okay as long as no one's trying to take pictures of you or kill you." She nodded. "Plus, delivery doesn't always get where you want it when you want it."

"Okay but how about you let me lead the way this time when crossing a street." He smiled at her with his face right next to hers. She smelled nice. Clean, like a fresh spring in the mountains of South America he'd been near once during an op.

There was a definite shiver at how close he was, and his stubble was a little scratchy. Her hand lifted to scratch at the stubble absently. Her hand went a little further back to tug at his ear lobe playfully before she nodded ever so slightly.

"You can lead the way. I guess." She sounded a little disappointed, but there was a hint of a smile as she said it.

He was so tempted to snitch a kiss but after just being in trouble thought he might be pushing his luck if he did that. He behaved himself and let her go, but kept a hold of her hand. Yes, he was the type of guy who liked holding hands! Shut up! He still can blow shit up from five miles away.

"How about some regular cheeseburgers and fries?" He made sure the light was with them this time and started across the street.

"Cheeseburgers and fries are just fine." Fred wouldn't have been too upset about a kiss, but she didn't try to get one for herself. She was still a little upset with him, even if she was smiling. It was strange. Even in what she saw between Wesley and Charles, they never seemed overly upset with each other for long. Then again, the show didn't show every moment, and there were a few moments in there, weren't there? She was going to have to talk to Jack eventually.

"I have to talk to Dean about Jo. And then I need to find Sam. Think Dean misses him." Fred sighed softly. "Who knew running a detective agency could be so emotional and personal?"

His brows lifted for the list of names he didn't know and he looked at her a bit stiffly. "Dean? Jo?" How many exes did she have? "Who are these guys and do I have to go pick fights with all of them?"

"I don't think you'd want to pick a fight with any of them. Dean and Sam are brothers. Jo's one of their friends; she runs a place - the Workhorse?" Fred's brows furrowed. "Roadhouse! That's nothing like 'workhorse.'" She tsked softly at herself.

"Dean and Sam help me. Well, Dean does. Sam doesn't so much. He's kind of MIA." She sounded a little sad about it, but then she was the type of person who cared a great deal about people. "Harry's right next door, but I can ask Dinah about him. Maybe. Wonder how he's doing. Haven't seen him in a while - he's Dinah's boyfriend. They're the only ones I knew before things went crazy here in the City. I know that seems a little odd to say, but they did literally go crazy. The City put us in Arkham Asylum. Still haven't figured out why."

Her fingers squeezed his softly as they crossed the street. She was looking for a good burger place for them to stop at. She didn't always look for a place like that; she was and probably always would be a waffle/pancake gal.

"They're the only ones left. I used to have more friends. They were all guys.." She paused to think about that, and soon gave it a shrug as if it were nothing. "Wesley, Angel, Norman - well, Norman wasn't my friend exactly. Not sure Norman Bates could be anyone's friend, just always wondered what would happen if someone could have given him nicer attention. Like a real friend."
