Recovering (Dean)
The first outing for the City's Justice League hadn't gone as smoothly as she'd hoped for it. It had been a close call regarding Lois' life, but besides that Dinah thought her team had done well. She didn't think that the statement issued by the Mayor's office that had come down on them for acting without government approval had been rather harsh.

All the same, the attack on her team stung. She was feeling overprotective of them, and she felt as though any heat regarding their actions should have been directed at her. She had been the one calling the shots. They had all just done what she'd asked and done it damn well if anyone asked her.

She set down her copy of the day's City Voice on her office desk. She needed to get her mind off the Mayor's statement. After all, Lois' article had been complimentary except for the part regarding the official statement.

It was time for lunch anyway. It had been a slow day at the Sherwood Florist, though she'd kept herself busy in making sure they had enough stock ordered for Valentine's Day. It was a month early, but this was the best time to plan to make sure there were no snafus on the biggest day for business of the year.

Dinah used her left hand to let herself out of the shop. Her right wrist was still in a cast, which was going to make any more crimefighting difficult until she healed. She wasn't happy about it, but she'd gotten the best medical care she could have asked for thanks to Hank. And she would just have to take it easy until she was needed.

Once outside, she gave a quick glance to the stairs leading to the apartment above the shop. She hadn't actually talked to Dean in months. She missed him, but he was the one who'd been avoiding her. She'd tried to talk things out at the victory party for Jack, so as far as she was concerned the ball was in his court.

Dean hadn't exactly been avoiding Dinah as of late, but he kept missing his chance to talk to her. He certainly didn't want to bother her after being slapped by one Lois Lane, as well as meeting yet another person who knew the Dean who'd come before. Fred and Lois' notebook had been keeping him busy, and he had let that keep him away from the woman he considered a friend, which was strange.

He was hungry, after waking up just a few moments ago. He got cleaned up enough to go out in public, taking the stairs down to the street and the food waiting for him. He hadn't meant to meet up with Dinah, but there she was, almost as if she knew.

"Shit." Dean hissed softly, hoping that she didn't hear him. He decided to smile rather than wince and go back upstairs.

"Hey, Legs."

Dinah heard the soft swear. It stung, but if he was going to be friendly, then she would let it drop.

She just wasn't going to hang around all that long since he was apparently still not all that thrilled about seeing her.

"Hey Dean," she said with a nod.

She didn't bother to tell him not to call her 'Legs.' The nickname had sort of stuck by now. And she wasn't exactly in the mood to argue.

"I was just on my way to get some lunch."

Explanation given, she kept walking. She wasn't exactly walking away, but she figured that he could either take the easy out or keep up with her. It wasn't like running into someone on the street meant that one was required to stay and chat. There was nothing wrong with exchanging greetings and going on your way.

"Oh, yeah?" Dean let the door close completely and settled into step beside her. It wasn't that he wanted to argue, but how did you get back in touch with someone you hadn't been avoiding exactly yet you had? The hunter sighed softly, trying to figure out what to say.

"I was going out for a little bite myself." He smiled slightly at her. "Mind some company? There's this spot not far from here that has a great deal on food." He waited to see if she actually wanted company; he was more than willing to go on his own if she wanted.

Dinah was surprised, but she wasn't going to argue. She raised an eyebrow however.

"I don't mind. No lunch dates for you today?"

His lovelife was none of her business. She knew that. But it was kind of hard to ignore when he was getting slapped by someone she knew outside of her shop, or when Jennifer was bringing him up in conversation. Or Murphy was confiding in her that she was seeing him.

So, maybe it did bug her just a bit. She knew that he wasn't exactly being dishonest, but she thought that someone was going to end up getting hurt if things continued the way they were. Which wasn't completely out of left field, given that he'd just gotten slapped not too long ago. So clearly not everyone was happy with being a part of Dean's harem.

"No. My day planner is clear for the day. Though I am expected at cocktails later with the boys." Dean settled into step easily enough; his head bowed forward as went wherever they were going. He wasn't going to tell her where to eat, and it would probably serve him right if she picked one of those health food joints.

"Looks like you've been busy lately." He'd seen the paper with the mayor's comment about the JLC and Lane's experiences with a very handsy ape. He smiled at this one; she didn't deserve to be put in danger, but it was amusing that she got grabbed all the same.

"The mayor doesn't seem all happy with you." He glanced at her. "Sorry to see that."

"So, where do you want to go?" Dinah asked.

She hadn't picked out a place to eat, and he seemed to have had somewhere in mind.

She shrugged.

"I'm sorry too. I suppose I'm going to have to see if we can arrange a meeting. Maybe we can work something out so he realizes that we want to work with him, not against him."

It wasn't entirely new for the League to be at odds with the government. It had happened a few times over the history of the League. It just wasn't the way she wanted things to be.

"How about you? I haven't seen you around much, so I assume you're keeping busy too?"

"Some people are a little caught up in playing by the book." Dean shrugged, understanding what it was like to be in that situation. He tucked his hands in his jacket as they continued along. "Fred's gotten some cases she's needed help with, means money coming in. And, I got some information that led me to a few other cases that needed to be handled."

"Guess I gotta do what I do, ya know?" He smiled slightly. "Can't let people put up with ghosts and demons if they don't have to." He kept walking before he caught her elbow, tugging ever so lightly. "The diner's over here. It's no Biggerson's, but it's not bad." He smiled, guessing that she wouldn't have any idea what Biggerson's was.

"So, everything's okay with you, Legs?" He gave her a slight smile. "Haven't seen you in a while and all."

Dinah let Dean take the lead. She didn't know what Biggerson's was, but she didn't ask. She also didn't bother to point out that it had been his choice not to see her.

"I'm okay." She waved the arm that was in a cast at him with a small smile. "Recovering from my run-in with King Kong, but it could have been worse."

Considering that she'd faced off with a pissed off supersized gorilla, it could have been a lot worse than just getting smacked into a wall. But her tone was light and she wasn't too interested in looking backward at what could have happened if her cry hadn't knocked him out.

"Jake and I moved out of Wayne Manor and into a townhouse. He's doing a lot better," she added since she knew that Dean would most likely ask about Jake next.

"And you? How have you been? Besides busy, of course?"

"Worried about people, but again, it's what I do." Dean shrugged. He winced slightly at the cast. "Bad break?" Any break was bad really, but he hoped it wasn't so bad it would take her a long time to heal; he knew she'd rather be out saving the world than stuck inside with a bum arm.

"Glad Jake's doing better." He took a bit of a breath, wondering if she was going to hit him for his next question. "How about Harry?" He glanced at her.

"I'm glad you're back together." He thought he'd go ahead and cover that one. "Can't say I wasn't shocked, but if he makes you happy and treats you right..." He laughed softly. "Actually, it doesn't matter what I thought of the guy, or your relationship. You're a big girl, Dinah. You can look after yourself. And I'm sorry for acting like a jack ass."

Sometimes it was better to apologize than try to explain or even point fingers. Dean had learned that a long time ago.

Dinah looked over at Dean in surprise. When she'd asked him a couple months ago about what was going on, he'd blamed it on Zatanna reminding him of something he'd had to hunt. While she had suspected that Harry was in there somewhere, it was still surprising to get that confirmation.

"I'm sorry too. That's not exactly how I'd wanted to tell you about being back together with Harry," she said.

She stopped and then reached over to give him a hug.

"You know, for awhile there I would have said you were my closest friend here. I'm sorry that the way I handled things with Harry came between us."

She was sorry. She wasn't sorry that she'd gotten back together with Harry of course, but she was sorry that she hadn't given more thought to the fact that Dean might not be thrilled with it.

She released the hug and looked up at him, frowning.

"Who have you been worried about? Is everyone okay?"

Dean came to a stop, shocked that Dinah was definitely hugging him. He returned the hug without fighting it. His arms wrapped easily around her, holding her close for the moment. He rubbed her back and arm softly. It wasn't an overly forward gesture, just holding her.

"The usual suspects: Sam, you, some kids I met, Fred, a few people I've helped out." He smirked slightly, giving a slight shrug. He released his hold on her and stepped back, motioning her to move it along. He was hungry after all.

"Jen, Murphy, Lois - actually in that case I'm more worried about me." He laughed softly, shaking his head. "Yeah, it's my fault I'm sure." He was opening the door to that conversation.

"And, someone who is supposed to be dead." His lips pursed for a moment. "I got her killed."

The hug was nice. Dinah closed her eyes and let herself just enjoy it for a moment before they broke it off. She was happy to keep moving after that.

When he opened the door for conversation on his love life, she bit her lip and tried not to frown.

"Well, I would point out that you're eventually going to have to pick just one woman, but..." she shrugged. "Kind of thinking you got the point when Lois slapped you." She gave him an apologetic smile. She hadn't been meaning to spy, but it had happened right outside her shop windows.

If anything, she'd hustled some of her employees away from staring out the windows after that scene.

"Most women I know don't like to share, and they don't like to do casual for too long. If they're still around, I'm guessing there are some feelings by now."

She shrugged.

She didn't point out that he seemed to have an awful lot of people to worry about, and as much as she wanted to tell him that he didn't have to worry about her she didn't think it would do any good to tell him not to worry. She had a long list of people she worried about too and nothing anyone could say would put her mind at ease.

She did, however, look over at him at the mention of the woman who was supposed to be dead.

"She's new here?" she asked. "Is she... how's she taking it?"

She realized that she probably shouldn't push for details, but he had brought it up after all.

"She was someone you cared about?" It was barely a question. She assumed that the girl was someone he cared about, judging from the look on his face.

"Dinah, I haven't seen most of them in a while. And Lois was just mad that I kissed her then took her notebook." Dean paused a moment to give the blond a look. "Right, you know Superman." He smirked slightly as he started walking again, shaking his head.

"Of course, you know Lois Lane. She didn't like that I put the kibosh on her story. Not really worried about it myself. Kind of disturbed that Jeannie from I dream of... is here and knows me. Or the other me. The me that was here before me..." His hand lifted to his head to rub at his temple. "This place can do a number on a guy's melon." He smirked.

"Yeah, and she's taking it as best she could. Her mother's not here, and that's tough. Her mother died when she did." He shook his head. "Yeah, there aren't that many women who tell me 'no' the night before a suicide mission." He was making a joke, but it had meant something. He was doing his best not to sound to torn up about it. "She's got the Roadhouse - that's her place now."

Yeah, Dinah knew Lois. In fact, she was pretty sure Lois was more likely to get angry over a stolen lead than over a romantic liason. Even if this Lois seemed to be younger than Lois had been when they'd met.

She was a little bit surprised at the volunteered information about the woman who was supposed to be dead but wasn't. She took Dean's arm and gave it a gentle, hopefully reassuring, squeeze.

"Like I said, some women don't do casual. Could be she thought you were hitting on her just because it was the night before a suicide mission," she said with a shrug. "And if it was a suicide mission, then I'm assuming she knew the risks? Which meant that what happened to her wasn't your fault."

She might not have known the situation, but she knew Dean. He was careful when it came to protecting other people. And he was likely to blame himself for things that he really didn't have all that much control over.

"Are you doing okay?" she asked gently.

She couldn't blame him if he wasn't. Getting someone back who you'd said goodbye to was never easy. She knew that all too well. When Ollie had come back it had been... happy and sad and bittersweet and painful and confusing.

"I started the fuckin' apocalypse that put her in the situation in the first place. Yeah, it was my fault. If she didn't know us, she'd have lived longer. She wouldn't have died that way, I know." Dean couldn't really know, but he could be pretty certain that Jo would not have died that way, a suicide bomb to take out a few hellhounds. He took a deep breath and looked over at the woman beside him. He lightly touched her hand on his arm, giving her a weak smile.

"I'm doing as okay as I can be." He shrugged. "It doesn't matter how much she knew; Sam and me - we've gotten people in rough situations as long as we've lived." Some could say that Sam was the one who started it all, but it was really about the two of them. Or it had always been about the two of them. He sighed softly.

"I'm glad to know that she's around. I wish she were in Heaven, but I'm glad she's around. That she's not in Hell." He didn't think Ellen or Jo would be on their way downtown, but he was glad to know that that at least one of them was definitely not in Hell.

It suddenly made a lot more sense that Dean would keep the women he was 'seeing' at arm's length. And that he'd avoid her instead of trying to work through what he'd been mad about. In a way, he reminded her of Bruce just now. Bruce had a hard time letting anyone close-he always seemed to feel that if he let someone too close he was putting them at risk.

She didn't know how much she wanted to press for details on the apocalypse. She thought it was good that he was talking about it, but she didn't want to push too hard and force him to shut down.

"You don't know what might have happened if she didn't know you. You ever save her life?" she asked, on a hunch.

"A time or two, but she did the same for me." Dean smiled slightly. "She wanted to be her own person, and I don't blame her for that. It's just that she would have gotten into another sort of trouble. She wouldn't have gone out the way she did; it wasn't pretty. If she really wanted to be a hunter - and she did - she would have died horribly anyway, but this was messy."

Dean was losing his appetite the more they talked about it all, but he didn't stop walking. He wanted to keep moving; it was what he was good at after all. It was what Winchesters did when they got in trouble: they just kept moving. He nodded at his own words.

"Hunters usually don't die of old age or peacefully in their sleep. We get taken out by things that want to eat us for a snack. We've got enemies. Sam and me have got some of the biggest." He sighed and shrugged. "We're wanted by the guys upstairs and down." He smirked slightly, and yes, he might have been a little proud of the fact.

"So, burgers good for you?" He glanced at her, leading her to one of he better burger joints in this place.

"Superheroes don't usually die of old age either," Dinah agreed. "There are times when I wonder how I've managed to last as long as I have."

She smiled at Dean. She had heard the pride in his voice and while most people might think he was crazy, she could relate. Capturing the attention of some of the bigger, nastier supervillains wasn't exactly desirable but it was a mark that you were doing your job if the really bad guys were pissed off.

"Burgers are fine," she agreed, wondering if the diner he had mentioned served burgers or if he'd changed his mind. She wasn't feeling terribly picky about lunch at the moment.

She realized that she was still holding onto his arm and gave it another squeeze before letting go.

"This might be none of my business, but is this friend of yours the reason that you haven't seen Jen or Murphy lately?"

She was trying to tread lightly. He'd opened up more than usual about his love life and she wanted to be supportive if he'd let her. He was her friend and she wanted to see him happy, not keeping everyone at arm's length.

"Been busy, Legs." Dean hadn't lied about that; he had been pretty damn busy. "Not exactly seeing either of them. I guess I owe them a dinner, but no, she's not the reason. Just found out she was back, honestly." He sighed, smiling at the arm squeeze. He didn't try to get her arm back, nor did he comment on its absence.

"Dinah, they're grown women." He smirked slightly. "They'll do what they want, and I don't think I'm high on their lists for long term commitments." There were times that he didn't know how Lisa could have put up with him for as long as she did. She was a good woman, and there were times he really did miss her. She'd been comfortable, but he'd never say anything like that aloud because it'd be a good way to get hit.

"They can call and ask for a dinner any time they wanted. There's this amazing thing called a phone. They haven't bothered, so I think it's one of those open ended things." He gave her a wink and a smile. "Here we go."

It looked like a real dive, but it Dean's smile suggested it really would have good food inside.

Dinah hadn't exactly been trying to comment on his arrangement with either woman, but she supposed it had come off like that.

She shrugged.

"I was just curious how she fit into it all. If you have feelings for her, you might want to think about the possibility that you're getting a second chance at trying something when you have the chance of a morning after instead of the night before a suicide mission. That's all."

She gave him an apologetic smile.

"And as long as you're happy with things the way they are, then that's the last thing I'll say on the subject. Promise."

She eyed the diner, but didn't blink an eye. It wasn't like she was strictly a fine cuisine type of girl. She'd found some of the best food in some of the most unlikely places. She would trust Dean on this one. The man was pretty passionate about his burgers from what she could see.

"I doubt it'll be the last thing, but thanks for asking." Dean didn't say anything about Jo. He wasn't even going to consider second chances; things were just too different here or anywhere. He'd have to explain Lisa, explain Sam, explain so much shit he'd rather not think about it.

"It's good." As if he could tell she was a little leery about the destination. The hunter opened the door for her, and the inside wasn't much better than the outside. It did look clean at least, but it wasn't brand new, not by any stretch of the imagination.

"We'll have two with the works." Yes, he was ordering for her, but it was a simple order. "Also bring a pitcher." He motioned in a vague direction of some tables.

"Everything comes on the side, so you can pick what you want on it." Dean usually just slopped it all together. He headed to one of the tables he'd just motioned to.

Dinah smiled, glad he wasn't mad. He was probably right. She shrugged.

"Can't help it if I want you to be happy."

Even if Dean hadn't exactly confirmed that he was happy, she was content to drop the subject for the moment. She followed him into the restaurant and raised an eyebrow as he ordered for her.

Once they reached the table, Dinah took a seat. The beer was brought out quickly, though she didn't pour any for herself immediately.

Dean gave her a slight smile. He wasn't exactly happy, but he knew he could be far worse. He was lucky to be alive and in one piece all things considered, but there were times that he wished he could have the easier type of life that came with very little drama and no end of the world type issues, the kind of life he had with Lisa. He'd been happy enough with her.

"How about you, Legs? Are you happy?" He hadn't exactly asked that before, at least not lately.

He waited for her to answer, and as he did he filled both their glasses. He didn't ask to make sure she was okay with it. It wasn't like he was trying to get her drunk, and they hadn't driven there. It was just one of those tomes a little alcohol didn't hurt.

Was she happy? Dinah supposed it was only fair that he would turn the question around on her. It wasn't an easy answer when it came down to it. There were times when things were very good with Harry and when she was very happy. And then there were times when they were both so busy that they barely saw each other, or times when his phone wasn't even working and he was too busy holed up in his lab or working on a case for her to even get a hold of him if she needed him.

Times like now when she was dealing with the fallout from a poorly planned rescue and a Mayor that was now trying to make them out to be loose canon types.

It also took a lot of time to rebuild trust after it had been broken and sometimes she felt as though they just hadn't had enough time. Or maybe she'd been holding him at arm's length and using work, the League and taking care of Jake as an excuse to avoid getting in too deep and risking getting hurt again.

When it came down to it, she was pretty sure that a lot was stemming from her own issues. Harry had been very sweet to her since they'd reconciled. They were just both getting to be two ships passing in the night.

She shrugged and took a drink of the glass of beer.

"I'm happy that Jake's doing better and that the shop is doing well. Not so much about everything going on with the League and the City at the moment."

That might not have been what he was trying to ask, but it was an honest answer at least.

Dean smirked slightly at the nonanswer answer. He gave her a hint of a nod in respect as she'd not pushed him with his own "answer." Taking a sip of beer, he leaned back and stared over at her. His head tilted ever so slightly.

"Glad that Jake's doing better. What did you do to the mayor anyway? Did you not show him your fishnets when he asked to see them up close and special?" While the guy might have been a good one, he didn't hold politicians in high regard. He felt for her, and Fred. Fred was one of her buddies, and she'd been seeing that guy. He sighed softly.

"Fred's probably not taking this so well." While the woman could get quite chatty, she hadn't said a thing about the break up. Dean wouldn't have known exactly what to do, but then Fred didn't seem all that interested in being comforted. She'd been very busy getting jobs and contracting them out to him.

Dinah just shook her head at Dean with a small chuckle.

"You know, not everyone wants to see the fishnets up close and personal."

Her expression sobered a moment later.

"Fred's taking it about as well as you would expect. I'm pretty sure it hasn't been easy on her."

Fred hadn't been overly chatty about the situation, though Dinah knew enough to know that she'd broken up with him and she could tell that Fred wasn't exactly happy in the wake of the statement that had been put out there.

"Can't say this is the first time that a body of government has gotten nervous over people with superpowers using their abilities so publicly."

She could even understand it. And if King Kong hadn't interrupted their first meeting, her next step would have been to try to arrange a collaboration with the Mayor. Now... well, it was going to be a lot more difficult to smooth things over but she was going to have to try soon.

"Yeah." Dean sighed softly. "Her own boyfriend turning on her friends. That's got to be a bitch. To have that come out after he is seen kissing her." Yes, he was damn clueless. He would have punched the guy for hurting the poor woman like that; people didn't do that to the ones they loved. It was an act of betrayal.

"Well, it can get dangerous. Taking the law into your own hands. Sometimes the law gets a little jealous when you touch their bad guys." He laughed softly, sadly. He'd been on the not making the law happy end of things. He was a vigilante in his own right, and he'd had too many runs in with the law. Then again, if she'd read the books, all of them, then she'd know all about how screwed up his life got.

"Ah, kick ass." The food showed up. The hamburgers were huge, and the fries were a decent portion. It wasn't a cheap place to eat, but a guy got his money's worth. Dean expected Dinah to take some of it home with her; he planned on eating every bite.

Dean started putting his burger together, putting everything on the bun with a few of the condiments. It was going to get messy, but he didn't care. It wasn't the best in the world, but it was pretty damn good. "We need more napkins." He quickly said to the waiter before he go too far away.

Dinah blinked in surprise at the fact that Dean didn't seem to be in the loop about Fred's break-up. She supposed Fred wasn't exactly one to go around shouting the news, but she'd thought that it might have come up since the two had been working together sometime.

"Um, actually... Fred and Jack broke up after that kiss."

Anything else was really Fred's business, and she hadn't actually confirmed that Fred was seeing Jensen though she strongly suspected it. But if Fred wasn't ready to volunteer that information to her closest friends, Dinah wasn't going to go around telling people either.

She raised an eyebrow as the oversized burger was placed in front of them and as Dean prepared to dig in. She was a little more delicate in putting a little bit of lettuce, tomato and ketchup on her burger. For just a minute, she considered looking for a fork and knife to eat the massive thing. Then she realized that was probably a little bit ridiculous and just picked it up and took a bite.

"Mmm," she let out a little exclamation of appreciation.

He was right, it was a pretty great burger.

The hunter winced at Dinah's announcement. Son of a bitch. For a moment he considered punching the mayor; he didn't know what was going on between the Geeky McCutie, but he didn't want the girl's feelings to be hurt. She was a good kid after all.

"Thanks for the heads up on that." There was no sarcasm. He meant it. Dean didn't need to say the wrong thing because it was the fragile looking crazy ones that could really cause trouble if they thought you'd wronged them. He'd not had that much experience with them, but he'd certainly dealt with things that didn't look so dangerous.

He smiled a little at her reaction to the burgers before he bit into his own. Mayo and a few other things, like bits of onion and tomato, dripped down onto his plate, but he didn't seem to care. It was a damn good burger. It wasn't his favorite, yet that really didn't matter. A good burger was a good burger.

Eating had commenced, and Dean was okay with just shooting the shit, so to speak. They'd discussed some of the bigger issues; he liked to think they'd probably go back to watching Dr. Sexy and hanging out. He'd missed one of the few females he could just be around without worrying if he had to be overly charming or badass. He didn't have to try to bed her. Sure, he didn't have to try to bed any of them, but that was another issue all together.
