Ready, set, ow (Lindsey)
She and Dinah were going to look into getting members for a new League together. That made Zatanna feel good, especially considering her history with the League and Batman, but bygones were apparently bygones and she'll take whatever chance she can get! It did mean that she needed to get to know the City a bit better. She thought the best way to do that was to put Fred's theory of random teleportation to the test. Her working theory was that so long as she wasn't trying to get out of the City, was working with it the teleports shouldn't be that terrible.

The best laid plans of mice and mystics should be her new motto. Her teleport planted her right in the middle of a road, facing down an oncoming pickup truck. She only had enough time to gasp out a profanity before it connected with her, sending her sprawling and her hat flying off her head to land perfectly on the hood of the truck.

Lindsey didn't hit people with this truck. He didn't do that because he wasn't psychotic, and because he loved her. The truck. Always had. He'd thought about hitting Angel with her a time or two. That was where that stopped.

She was an old enough thing that a woman flying through the air and landing hard wouldn't even do a dent's worth of damage. Lindsey hit the break, cut the engine, and got out of the car as fast as he could. Morally questionable or not, hitting a stranger with a car was not okay.

The woman laying there was beautiful, which figured. Long dark hair, pale. Shit.

"Ma'am?" he said, leaning over. "You okay? Christ I didn't even see you."

Okay, ow! Hitting the pavement at roughly the same velocity as the truck that struck her hadn't been fun in any way that matters. Her head had hit the concrete. She knew that because it was still on the concrete and she was trying to see through strands of her hair. She just thanks her lucky stars she knows how to take a fall. Go limp!

"..not your fault." An initial assessment, involving listening to outraged nerve endings, reveals bruises and scrapes. "I'm okay...I thi-INK! Ow!"

She had tried to sit up. Her head screamed at her that this was a bad idea, and as if to help with that point her knee and ankle joined in on the protest. "Maybe less than okay."

Lindsey cursed under his breath. This wasn't the kind of thing anyone wanted to deal with--ever. Least of all him, and, he'd bet, this girl.

He frowned, kneeling down next to her. "Alright. Can you move anymore'an that?"

If she couldn't, he was going to try to lift her up and put her in the truck. He knew sometimes you could get hurt so bad that you shouldn't BE moved, but he was really fucking hoping that wasn't the case.

"Hang on." She couldn't focus enough to form up an incantation to heal herself for the pounding in her head. That sucked! Fortunately, her time training with Batman was enough experience to be able to do a quick assessment of her immediate injuries. Her head knocked against the pavement. Possible concussion. Nothing seemed too bright, too out of focus or spinned when she shut her eyes so not too bad. She must have just tried to move too fast.

"Yeah." She slit her eyes open to look at this guy and held up a hand. "With help, but not too fast or I might puke on you. Bad enough I probably spit on your truck." She tried for a weak smile for the joke. She'd been hit worse than that by elder demons. And Guy Gardner.

"Truck's seen worse," Lindsey said.

He grabbed the woman's hand, and once he had it, pulled her up enough that he could get his free hand around her waist.

The plan was to get her into the truck and checked out at the hospital, unless she was one of those that really threw fits about hospitals. But something occurred to him as he got her to her feet.

"Uhm," Lindsey said, "Realize this is gonna sound..." He let it trail off.

"Where'd you come from? Did you... did you just fall from the sky?"

She first held her breath when she moved then it caught as her leg gave a protest in warning. When he was getting his arm around her she put hers behind him and clutched at his shoulder.

"Hmm?" She was trying to focus on how to move without hurting herself more so his question didn't sink in entirely at first, when it did she groaned with a scowl. "No. Teleport went wrong." AGAIN! "Think I'm going to avoid those for a while. They don't seem to be going well."

Lindsey sort of blinked in response, and then smirked with only the left side of his mouth. Teleporting. She was teleporting.

"I'm gonna have to get used to this place," he muttered, helping her get into the cab of the truck.

Once she was settled in there, he went around to the driver side and hopped in, too.

He turned to look at the girl, then. She looked like she was in a decent amount of pain. "Avoiding it for a while sounds good," he mused. "Look, I was gonna take you to the hospital." He paused, eyes searching hers. "You okay with that?"

She wasn't too proud to admit she whimpered in pain when they moved, but she did manage to grab her stupid hat off the hood of his truck when they got close enough. Not that she could lose it permanently. It tended to show back up in Shadowcrest every time she thought for sure she'd lost it, but why put it to the test.

After he got her in the truck she spent a little time focusing on breathing, her eyes gently shut and trying to think through the pain with her fingers sunk into her hair for something to hold onto. Her eyes opened and she peered through the crook of her arm to the guy she'd made hit her and chuckled for his question.

"Yeah I think I'm pretty okay with a hospital. I'd kind of like a professional to make sure the bones are set before I whip up a spell to heal them up some."

A spell? In addition to the teleporting?

He turned the engine over and started to drive, eyebrows furrowed, wondering what in the hell this woman could possibly be. Was there a polite way to ask that? Did polite even matter?

"Look, I don't wanna pry," Lindsey said, "but you can teleport, you said just now whip up a spell..." He drummed his thumbs on the steering wheel. "Who are you?"

Whoops! Apparently she hadn't done this whole introducing yourself thing properly. She blames getting her chimes rung by a truck for the lack of manners.

"Oh. Sorry." She gave him a tight smile, pain forming wrinkles at the edges of her eyes. "Zatanna Zatara. Stage magician and functioning mystic. Friends and guys who hit me with their trucks when I appear out of nowhere can call me Zee."

Lindsey's eyebrow kicked up. Stage magician? He guessed that explained the hat. And mystic? He'd have to find out what she meant about that. His mind leapt to the readers Wolfram and Hart hired to make sure their employees were towing the company line.

He smirked a little at her comment, though. "Shouldn't be too hard to remember. I don't normally hit women with my truck." Especially not pretty ones. "I'm Lindsey."

She chuckled then flinched when the truck his a small bump. That hurt! Yeesh! She was going to have to get some pain killers in her before she started a healing circle, damn it!

"And I normally have better techniques to meet guys." A tight smirk was tossed his way. "But nice to meet you anyway, Lindsey."

"I'd hope so," he said. "Fallin' on 'em is only gonna work so many times. And gettin' hit by cars'd get old in a hurry."

He'd heard that the streets here liked to move. Lindsey was really hoping that didn't happen right now. She didn't seem so hurt she was in real danger, but it was obvious this woman was in pain. He really didn't want to see that keep going on.

"So can you control that? The fallin' on cars and guys thing?"

"Sure." She took a few deep breaths in an attempt to calm herself down. Honestly, it was just her knee and ankle! She's had worse! Her inner monologue was calling her a pussy.

"I'm taking teleporting in this City off my list of spells." She gave a very wry chuckle. "It's a lot less painful to meet guys in a skirt and heels."

Lindsey chuckled. "Might be worth it."

The second she mentioned a skirt and heels, he started to imagine her in one. Lindsey was pretty confident most men would do the same thing, and didn't think anything of it. He didn't figure she had any trouble finding guys. Not looking like that.

"Course," he said, "then you don't get the free bonus ride to the hospital."

If his imagination appreciated the image of her in a skirt and heels, he should see her in her costume. Boy pants and fishnets. They kind of take things a little bit father.

She gave him a tight grin and chuckled. "Xrays and percocet. Boy you really know how to show a girl a good time."

Lindsey didn't react much to what she said. He was thinking of Eve. And Darla. He thought about Darla more than anyone probably knew or suspected--including Angel.

He had no idea what happened to Eve. She sure as Hell wasn't here, that much he knew. If his life of worrying about the Senior Partners all the time was gone, then he figured she was, too.

It was enough to make him quiet for a second.

"Well," Lindsey said, "maybe the second date'll have train derailment." He smirked.

She thought she'd offended him with her joke and glanced at Lindsey with her smile slipping away. She had just been about to say something when he finally said something so she was caught off guard. Hey, she just got hit by a truck! She's off her game a little bit!

"Well I have been accused of being a train wreck on a date before." She chuckled with a grin reforming on her face.

Happily, the City didn't stop him from finding the hospital. Lindsey stopped the truck in front of it and put it in park, and cut the engine. As usually seemed to be the case with hospitals, there were some orderlies near the door, waiting to help. They started to head toward the truck.

"Y'want me to go in there with you, or am I just the dick who hit ya with a truck?"

She tilted her head a little as she pondered that. On the one hand she had put him into a very awkward position and he was nice enough to take her to the hospital when he could have just called for an ambulance. He has done enough for the trouble she'd caused.

On the other, he really was kind of pretty.

She shrugged a shoulder slightly with a smile as the orderly opened the door. "I'd understand if you want to clear out. Continue with whatever plans I rudely interupted. But I wouldn't mind someone making sure the xray techs don't cop a feel."

Lindsey chuckled. He liked her. Whatever this place was and whatever role he had in it, which he still wasn't too sure of, he liked this woman. He could use a friendly face. Hell, right about now, he'd be glad to see Angel. But that was unlikely.

He nodded. "I'll check in on ya in a little bit."

He had to park the truck, after all. "I'll find ya. Coupla minutes."

Once she was out of the truck and safe with the orderlies, Lindsey pulled away from the front of the hospital, looking for somewhere to leave the car. He'd go in and make sure she was okay, and he'd get on with... whatever the fuck he was doing. He wasn't too sure what that was.

She was still at the nurses' station of the ER with one orderly filling out paperwork while another was touching her knee with both hands. Zee was giving him a dubious look with a wry smirk.

"Yes, I know I don't have any form of ID on me, but is that really going to keep you from fixing my leg?" She spied Lindsey and blew a lock of her hair out of her face. "You see what I have to work with here?"

Lindsey arched an eyebrow at the nurse at the station.

"Ma'am, d'you mind if I take a look at that?" he asked, gesturing to the form the nurse was talking about.

He scanned it, and flipped it over and read the other side. Insurance was always a nightmare, and, he was pretty sure, invented by demons, but there was nothing on this form that said someone could be denied medical help for not having proper i.d.

He handed the form back and gave the nurse a close-lipped smile.

"There's nothin' on that form that says you've got any grounds to deny this woman medical attention, not you or this hospital. Matter of fact, if you do deny her service, I'm confident there's a lawyer in this town'll slap you with a lawsuit faster'an you can say 'go on through those doors, miss.'"

He blinked and turned up the smile.

The nurse huffed. Zee blinked and stared then beamed a smile at the orderlies. "Oh snap. Girlfriend's got a pitbull on retainer." How and who she wasn't entirely certain but she thinks she could hazard a guess safely.

"Possible dislocation of the knee. The ankle might be fractured, but we won't know for sure until we get some images." The orderly at her knee was just as amused as she was but kept his smirk hidden. "How did this happen again?"

Zee turned that smile to him and answered immediately. "Skateboarding."

Lindsey scowled, just slightly, but the smile didn't fade. He'd perfected that at Wolfram and Hart.

Skateboarding. That was cute. He waited until the nurses got her a wheel chair to take her into X-ray, and stopped the one that was ready to wheel her off. He leaned over to Zee and arched an eyebrow. "Think you can take it from here? Think I scared 'em enough."

He fished in his pocket and pulled out one of the business cards he'd found in his drawer in his weird office with his weird assistant. There was an address and a phone number, but no firm name. The only words on them were LINDSEY MCDONALD, ATTORNEY AT LAW. He shook his head at the card before holding it out to her.

Well, it looked like she'd be taking a taxi home to Shadowcrest, but she really wouldn't ask him to wait around. She'd caused him enough trouble and he was being a good sport about it.

"Yeah. Thanks." She smiled as she took the card and saw that her guess had been right. Weird lawyer. He drove a pickup instead of a Benz. She liked that. "I owe you."
