Woman locked in house, send assistance (Zatanna, Jennifer)
The storm had turned everything topsy-turvy. With some of his fellow police officers, Charlie was out canvasing streets in hopes of preventing looting, what there could be of it. He didn't even understand how the City wasn't cleaning things up; hadn't there been a Godzilla attack once? He was pretty certain someone had said that that had happened. He like those other police officers, who knew he was a detective but let him help out anyway, weren't worried about what the City wasn't doing; they had to worry about the citizen's of the City.

The detective had left a message with Ted, telling him that the damage to their mansion was minimal, not that they really had to worry about up keep. Ted had a large some of money after all, and Charlie wasn't that concerned with what happened to what he possessed. Possessions were nothing in the end. He had called someone to come look after the trees though; the orchard needed to be tended.

Charlie then called his partner. He hadn't talked to her in a while, at least socially. They'd had a few brushes at work, but nothing that had them working together which was a little odd seeing as they were partners. He missed her. He thought he might have scared her after their last big discussion. In fact, he missed her enough to call her back after he got a report that some woman was locked in her house. While it wasn't murder, Charlie felt they could try to figure this out together anyway. He got her on the phone the second time he called, and while he headed over, he gave her the address and the situation.

It seemed that neighbors had noticed that some woman was screaming bloody murder, or just yelling really loudly depending on who was asked. She wasn't coming out, and she might be locked in. Being locked in a house was odd, seeing as most of the buildings on the street had lost windows and some doors to the storm. Yet, the house seemed to have weathered things rather well. That was a small mystery in itself.

The detective headed up slowly to the front door. If he were one to put much faith in movies, he'd say this was one of those places horror movies happened. It was rife with the mystique and creep necessary to pull of a good horror movie. Thankfully, Charlie chalked it all up to this being a house recovering from a storm, a very lucky house.

"Unless it's not." He stood a few steps from the door. "Could have monsters inside, but what self-respecting monster would be inside when there is murder and mayhem to be had? Unless it's not one of those monsters." He had to give this one a small think through. Eventually he would get to the door.

Jennifer had rushed over when she'd gotten the call. Not really with the focus on helping, but she wanted to see her partner. So much had gone on and they'd not had any chance to speak. And they hadn't seen one another at all since the were-things.

She had no idea what he was talking about. Where he had come up with monsters was anyone's guess. Despite being zen for a day, Jennifer had not quite gotten the hang of Charlie's brain. She could handle most of it, but when he started talking in the middle of a thought, that was when she had the trouble. Though, to be fair to herself, she thought anybody would.

"I'm going to guess that you got bitten." She said, ignoring his monster spiel. "Considering that I didn't hear a goddamned thing from you. So what did you become?"

Jennifer rubbed her eyes and looked at the house. She'd never heard of anybody being locked inside before. And she had no idea why that somebody would be screaming like that unless they were being killed in some really horrible way. Yet, the yelling continued uninterrupted by silly things like death.

To say Zee was pissed off would be applying a new definition to the phrase. Upon waking this morning she noticed something was different. While not entirely unusual for Shadowcrest typically the Gotham skyline didn't change. The house had apparently moved in the middle of the night without her being aware of it.

However, when she had padded downstairs to go out the front door and investigate the house got stubborn. The door wouldn't open. Neither would any of the windows. She tried breaking them magically and physically. Nope. Zilch. Now she'd been locked OUT of Shadowcrest before, but never locked IN Shadowcrest and the damn house wasn't explaining anything. Which was usual.

So there she was. Pulled on the front door and shouting at her house. "YOU STUPID PIECE OF JUNK I'M GOING TO TURN YOU INTO A SPLIT LEVEL IF YOU DON'T OPEN THIS DOOR!" Which opened just as the two got to the porch, pretty much leaving her to shouting in their faces.

"I was a dog." Of course, Charlie could have meant figuratively because he hadn't tried to talk to her. He could have meant literally, especially since they had just dealt with were-creatures. It had been a very enlightening experience. "I met two other dogs." This was, of course, said as the door came open and a woman started yelling at...well, it couldn't have been them, seeing as they weren't touching the door.

"Easy case we've never had to solve." He looked from the yelling woman and his partner then back again. "Storm must have created a swell in the wood and made it difficult to open the doors and windows. Happens all the time." He knew that wasn't the right answer, even if it was the easiest one.

"Detective Charlie Crews." Charlie held up his badge. "My partner, Agent Jennifer Government." He tilted his head to the woman beside him. "We were called in to investigate a woman yelling in a surprisingly intact house after one of the City's...biggest storm. Could be the only, but it did snow a year or so back." His eyes narrowed. "The biggest storm to date? But the snow was higher, locked people in. So, not biggest?" Yes, he was asking for her partner's opinion.

Jennifer's eyes grew very large as the door swung open and she was left being yelled at. She blinked a few times and then shrugged. Go figure that the first case they'd be put on wasn't a case at all. She didn't even have a chance to question him further about the dogs.

Charlie's answer for this was acceptable to her. So she decided to leave it at that. It could have been something else, probably was, but it might just as easily been the wood swelling from all the rain. She wasn't about to take a guess after everything that had just gone on.

"Different kind of storm." Jennifer decided. "That was just snow. This was. I don't know what this was."

She looked at the woman, dark haired, attractive. Angry.

"Well. I suppose it's nice to meet you." Jen didn't know if she should be welcoming this woman to the City, or reminding her of the weird shit that went on all the time. She'd never seen her before, but that certainly didn't mean a damn thing.

Zee looked first disgusted and seemed to be aiming that at the doorframe, then apologetic to the people on her porch and finally confused but curious as she looked past them to the scenery behind them.

"Sorry. I didn't mean to yell in your face." Her brows came down as she came out on to the porch then yelped when the door slammed shut behind her, catching her on the backside.

Of all things she was wearing sleep pants with rabbits wearing top hats all over them and a tank top that read magic across her chest. "Oh no."

She whirled around and tried the door. Locked. She growled something under breath then hit the door with the side of her fist. "Split level! I swear!"

Then she turned back around with a sheepish smile. "Hi."

Charlie gave his partner a quick glance and a brow raise. This was something new. He did like new things, so he gave Jen a happy little smile before looking at the woman who was now having issues being outside her house. She was yelling again too.

"We could call this domestic disturbance. Your neighbors called because they could hear you yelling." Charlie pointed with his thumb over his shoulder, and for her neighbors to hear her all the way down there, it was definitely disturbing some domestic tranquility. Of course, some people in larger cities liked the noise, so it was possible they just wanted to know what was going on, more than saving a life. Nosy neighbors.

"And it was different. Snow. That didn't have hail. Or wind. Pretty damn big storm all the same." As if that conversation was just as important as the one with the woman and her house issue.

"I think domestic disturbance is taking it a little too literally. But it might be the closest thing we've got." She couldn't think of another way to phrase what was going on here. A woman having a fight with her house.

"The snow only trapped us, it didn't really destroy things. This has ruined a lot of people's day." Or days. Or week, depending on how damaged their property was.

She looked at the woman again. "I like your pants."

There was no longer urgency in the matter, so she wasn't trying to be the cop. It just so happened that she was a cop, and was standing here.

"I don't have neigh-.." she looked past to where they were indicating and lo! She did. "..-bors." Okay what was going on here?!

She looked back to the woman a little helpless. "Thanks. They were a gift." From John. For her birthday years ago. Probably when she last saw him the son of a bitch.

She sighed and pushed her hand through her hair. She was used to weird but this was pushing it. "Okay. I'm sorry I yelled. I'll buy my neighbors cookies or something, but...and this is going to sound really nutty...where am I?"

"The City. We're from the City...I'm from the City PD; she's with CBI." That seemed the best way to explain it. "New comer." The detective looked at Jennifer. "Should have brought apples. Apples tend to help."

Apples hadn't really worked for the kid, Logan, but Charlie did like the fruit. He was certain that it would help somewhere. He'd seen it help before, but then that had been in a totally different situation and way. He stepped back, turning to look at the neighbors who were standing around trying not to look as if they were interested.

"She's okay! She's not dead!" Charlie yelled down at the tiny crowd who were quick to be on their ways. He looked back at the woman. "Unless you were murdering someone in there. Were you murdering someone in there?"

"Ah. Apples don't help anyone." Jennifer hadn't really thought about that, that she might have been the murderer and not the victim. She went back into her cop mode and put her hand on the butt of her gun.

"Excuse me please." She said to the woman and walked to the door. She turned the knob, expecting resistance, but got none. It opened right up for her. She glanced inside to make sure nobody was standing in the shadows and ready to hit her the second she looked away.

"Well. She might just be." Jennifer tilted her head to the side to indicate to Charlie that the woman might be crazy. Considering the door had opened, and how much yelling had gone on.

She disappeared inside to have a look for blood or death or any of the things that she'd have to make an arrest for.

"What city?" None of that made any sense to her and she watched the woman blithely open the door to Shadowcrest. Oh that house is going to PAY!

The inside was a sizable foyer, neat, stylish, expensive looking with antiques. Nothing was out of place, except for a coat rack that was knocked over. Past that was a living room that was just as tidy and a study across the hall where a fireplace was blazing away cheerily. A high pitch whine was coming from a room at the end of the hall.

Zee looked at the guy still with her with that sheepish look back in place. "Charlie? Is it? Am I in trouble because I haven't opened any dimensional doors lately, I promise!"

"Detective Crews." Charlie stepped forward, standing in the open doorway. He kept one eye on his partner, and the other on the woman. "The City. That is its name. Just the City. Capital C."

"Anything?" He didn't want to distract Jennifer, but he wanted her to know that he was still there. He'd help her no matter what. She was his partner, and he wouldn't let her get into a situation without getting her out.

"Now I'm going to have to ask you to stay right here. What is your name?" Yes, his attention was split, but he was rather good at having a split attention. Some thought that was how he functioned, and quite possibly it was. He hadn't pulled his gun, but it wouldn't take much. "Why was there yelling in your house?" He wasn't going to take the "I couldn't get out" excuse completely at face value. Jennifer was doing the cop thing, so he was going to do the cop thing.

She didn't see anything in the rooms that she was looking at, but there was a noise that she wasn't sure of. She was even looking under things. The yelling just didn't sit so well with her now. Not with that noise.

"Something." She called back to her partner. "Have no fucking idea what it is, but it's not blood or signs of violence."

Fireplace? Jennifer kind of frowned on that. And it was currently working. The storm had been bad, but the woman hadn't been here for it. Where did she come from that required a fire at this time of year? Or was it always going like that?

There was nothing to see, really. Except for that coat rack, and even that wasn't anything significant. But that sound just bothered her. She couldn't hear what Charlie was saying to the woman anymore, but she could still hear his voice. That was comforting.

Jennifer stood in front of the door, looking at it.

"Unless she can tell you what this is to your satisfaction," She yelled as loud as she could "I'm going in."

"Great." She was going to end up in jail. In her bunny jammies she was going to jail. She rubbed at her forehead with a sigh, her hand on her hip in a posture of absolute exasperation.

"My name's Zatanna. Zatanna Zatara." She eyed him expectantly but when he showed no sign of recognition she realized just how sunk her boat was. This STUPID house was going to get her locked in a nut house!

"I was yelling at my house to let me out because I didn't recognize the skyline. I wanted to see where the house moved to this time only it wouldn't let me out. I tried to break a window with the coat rack and that didn't work so then I really started yelling because where it was before there wasn't a neighbor for miles." She beamed a smile at him that said dude, you asked. "So before you arrest me for disturbing the peace can I change my clothes so Bertha the Bonegnawing Babe doesn't get any ideas?"

"I don't think we have anyone in lock up named Bertha, Ms.Zatara." Charlie gave the strange woman a look, but he didn't seem phased by her explanation as to why she was yelling. Honestly, he really had heard and seen stranger. He glanced back at Jennifer.

"Jennifer!" It took him a moment to realize that his partner was actually going in somewhere that could get her hurt. He stepped into the building holding the door open. "Come in. Stay here." He motioned for Zatanna to take a spot near the door. "Leave the door open."

"Jennifer!" He looked after his partner again. "What's in the room she's going to?" If she got hurt, it didn't matter if the woman's bunny pants were cute, Zatanna Zatara would have more than Bertha the Bonegnawing Babe to worry about.

Just to be cheeky she moved to the exact spot he pointed at with a huff. Seriously, nothing in Shadowcrest was going to hurt them if they weren't looking to cause trouble, and neither of them seemed the type.

As soon as she crossed the threshold she heard the sound and knew what it was. She grimaced because she knew she hadn't done that. Shadowcrest, yet again was taking advantage of something.

She looked at Detective Crews with a bland expression. "A tea kettle. It's the kitchen."

"What kind of tea?" The tone was still that of the detective doing his job, investigating. "Do you have scones? And possibly butter?" He wasn't joking. Or he might have been. It wasn't that easy to tell with Charlie sometimes.

"What is it you do, Ms. Zatara?" Now and then, he'd look round to make sure Jennifer was okay, what he could see of her and the house anyway. He hadn't pulled his weapon, which was saying a good bit. Charlie was a damn good shot, and he sometimes had a habit of shooting first and asking questions later when it was out. "Awfully big house for just one person." Somehow he said this without smiling.

Jennifer peered into the room and then put her gun down in a bit of exasperation. Who the hell had a tea kettle like that anymore? Actually, she couldn't think of one person in her life back home who drank tea. And all their beverage making things were more complicated.

She tucked the gun back into it's holster and returned to Charlie and the woman in the bunny pants, who had moved inside.

"Tea pot." She said, sounding a touch bored. She had heard her partner ask what the woman did, calling her Ms Zatara (really?) and waited to hear the answer.

She also noticed that he hadn't pulled his gun. "Glad you didn't shoot anyone this time."

"Uh..." she blinked in confusion at Detective Crews. What the hell kind of arresting was this that he was asking her about scones like she had invited him over? Besides, she hadn't put the kettle on so Shadowcrest was really up to something. Fortunately, she was beginning to get the idea of what. "I have all kinds of tea. Now that you ask there probably are scones and real butter, not that margarine crap. And I'm a stage magician."

She contemplates donning her costume but figured freaking out the nice police officers just as they were starting to not want to frisk her for weapons would be a bad idea.

"Shadowcrest is my family home. Literally generations have walked these halls." Sometimes she was convinced they still did!

"Don't worry." Jennifer told the woman. "You're not going to be arrested or questioned any further. We just had to make sure there wasn't anything going on in here that you might be trying to hide."

They'd had enough problems with murderers in the City, Jennifer felt that they didn't need another one taking up residence. Not that she could do anything about it, really.

She looked at Charlie. Then back at Ms Zatara. "You can't just be a stage magician. Can she? She can't, right? I mean, we're like the two most ordinary people here, and you're weird and I'm from the future."

"What else could she be?" Charlie looked at the bunny pants woman now, as if this could tell him anything else she might indeed be. It did make sense; most people in the City were more than they seemed to be. He kept coming back to something dangerous.

"When I had money, they said I was 'eccentric' not 'weird.'" The detective informed his partner without any snark; it was a simple observation he thought she'd like to know. "I suppose I'm just weird now. but what is weird? You're weird, yet doesn't weird make you normal in a city full of weird? Makes anyone normal weird, doesn't it? But, still, what is weird? Doesn't the word come from magic or fate? I'm not very magical. If we're going with magic, then she's weird. I'm...a fruit enthusiast."

Charlie's eyes narrowed as he thought about it, his eyes sliding off to look at something that really wasn't there. He hmphed and shrugged, smiling a little.

"We'd say don't leave town anytime soon, but you won't be going anywhere. So, try not to yell at ...whatever you were yelling at. It gives people ideas, especially if it was your house." He nodded, smiling. "Though sometimes ideas are exactly what people need."

Okay the woman was reassuring but this Crews guy was starting to freak her out a little bit, and that took some doing. She stared at him as he rambled on, the tea kettle slowly whistling down in the kitchen. The conclusions he came to almost made her giggle if not for the fact that he pretty much skewered her without realizing it.

"Uh. You make it sound like I'm a prisoner." Which she wasn't okay with. She would be missed! By...someone. Maybe John. Whenever he sobered up and needed a good shag, as he'd put it. "I'm a pretty good escape artist. Y'know." She smiled and twiddled her fingers. "Magic." She eyed Detective Crews with a knowing spark in her blues that was echoed slightly in her smile. "Or should that be eccentric?"

"I'm not weird, you're weird." Jennifer said it resolutely, completely ignoring the fact that she was the only one with a tattoo on her face in the room.

She looked at Ms Zatara. "You are. We all are. Now that you're here in The City, there's no way out unless it kicks you out. You can be the best escape artist in your world, but it's not going to matter much here. What the City wants, it takes, and keeps."

She might have sounded bitter about it, but that was only because it had recently done something really mean to her.

"Listen, you're going to find a lot of really weird shit here, and ... well. There's no and. That's about it." Jennifer looked at Charlie to confirm.

"And you could grow from it if you wish. Learn, become more open to the possibilities that exist, even if you are confined to a location that isn't exactly large, but not small." Charlie did have an "and." He always had an "and." Usually had one. His brow lifted at the smile, and he couldn't help the slight smirk in return. She was definitely trouble.

Jennifer's tone wasn't missed by the detective, but now wasn't exactly the best time to see how she was doing. Now wasn't the right time to get into a discussion about feelings. He just gave her a quick glance and a softer smile before looking at the bunny pants woman.

"You are here as long as you're here." Charlie wasn't exactly happy with this truth, but he was going to accept it for now. He had a purpose here, and he would make sure he fulfilled that purpose.

Hoo boy. She was going to have to explain. And she didn't care what they thought. This didn't sound like someplace she wanted to stay. A quick but thorough incantation would get her and Shadowcrest back to Gotham.

"Yeah." She cleared her throat and smiled. "I am some of that weird shit. Or at least I've been told that." She gave the woman an apologetic smile. "I am more than just a stage magician. My illusions are real."

It might be better if she gives a demonstration. She holds out her arms a bit. "Nothing up my sleeve..." She's in a tank top. She doesn't have sleaves. "eovD raeppa." There is a small flash of light between her hands then a pure white dove is suddenly there and flying away.

Weakly, "Ta da."

Jennifer watched the dove appear and fly away. She was feeling cynical today, and while it was pretty fun to watch, it didn't amaze her. She felt like she'd seen that kind of thing before here in the City.

"Uh huh." She nodded. "That's really nice for you, but it doesn't mean you're going anywhere."

She looked at Charlie again. Then back at bunny pants woman. "I mean, if Batman and Superman can't get out, you're not getting out. I'm sure there are other magic users here that you could speak to, though.

"As an agent of the CBI, I suppose I should tell you that the streets move, the buildings move, sometimes we get fucked with on a large scale, and we have a few psychos."

Charlie watched with interest. Magic could be fun, and bunny pants woman seemed to be very good at it. He actually gave her a tiny bit of applause because that was what people did when they see a magic trick, wasn't it? It seemed the polite thing to do, and someone had to make up for his partner's not so eager reaction. He smiled at bunny pant woman.

"She's right. Houdini, Andy Dufrense, Frank Morris, and Snake Plissken couldn't get out." So, the detective was mixing fact with fiction in that list, but he was trying to make a point. It might have amazed a few to know that he had actually watched a movie based in prison. "I think Batman would rather stay here; he seems settled in." Yes, Charlie had met Batman once. He was not Batman.

"We also have people who aren't real though if we're talking to them, I guess they are pretty real. Unless we aren't real, but then are we the butterfly or the man?" He nodded slightly then shrugged. "Either way, Death is a very nice looking woman. So, welcome to the City."

Zee was mighty surprised when all she got for a reaction was a weak golf clap and what equaled to a yawn. "Geezus. I'd get a better reaction from a coma ward." She rolled her eyes along with that. All right. They weren't straights.

Then Agent Government...really?...dropped two names that got Zee's attention. Her eyes snapped to the woman with her lips tightening together. "Batman and Superman are here?!" Clark and Bruce?! Yay and crap! But apparently they were stuck too. She was definitely going to have to find them and get answers the JLA style, or in her case the EX-JLA style.

Zatanna slid a dubious look back to Detective Crews. "Death? Short. Pale skin. Heavy black eye makeup. Always wears an anhk?"

"Superman was here. I don't think he is anymore. "Batman is."

Her eyes slid to Charlie, briefly. Should she tell her partner that she'd just worked with Batman? Or should she keep something like that quiet? Would Batman care? Would Charlie be jealous? She knew that he wouldn't get her into trouble. He'd understand why she did it. But as a partner, would he feel a sting because she'd gone to work with other people and not included him?

"Black Canary is here, too. And Dean Winchester. Once, we even had Godzilla."

"Batman is definitely here." Jennifer wasn't the only one who'd met the guy. Only, Charlie actually knew who Batman was, and he'd probably met the real Batman. Not that Charlie would know the different, right? "Cherubim. Leprechauns. Death, lots of Death. Joker? City has it all really. It's the one stop shop for all your cultural pop." Yes, he went for rhyming.

"So, Ms. Zatara, if you can keep the yelling at your house, or door, which ever it was, to a minimum, I'm sure the neighbors would appreciate it. So, would the police. We would have to keep coming out here to make sure you're not doing something you shouldn't be." It made sense to him. It was logical, right? Charlie looked at Jennifer, a little confused. "Who's Dean Winchester? Why is that name familiar?"

Charlie had met a Dean once, hadn't he?

Great. Bruce. She'd really rather beat her hand with a ball-peen hammer than run into Bruce. Knowing her luck she'll go out on a grocery run and blam! He'll be right there. Lurking.

She gave Detective Crews a salute with two fingers and nodded her head emphatically. "No more yelling at my house. Too loudly. Gotcha. Can do. Thanks for not booking me." She left off the Dan-O for good measure.

How did Charlie know Batman was here? Jennifer was definitely going to have a chat with him now.

"Dean Winchester." She shrugged. "I don't know. I met him when I got here, and saw him again on the ship with Spock."

She may not have told Charlie about that, she realized.

"Anyway, Ms Zatara, welcome to The City."

Charlie nodded slightly, not asking about Spock. He took his partner's words as they were. He looked at the bunny pants woman and nodded as well.

"Yes, welcome to the City. We'll be going." He waited for Jennifer to leave to lead the way out. They were going to have to discuss probably a good bit, but for now, they'd just go out and reassure the neighbors that the woman inside is not a criminal, probably, and that they're safe, or as safe as the City is.

"Gee," Zee said flatly. "Thanks." If she were a betting girl she'd say these two were married based on how they played off each other. She might as well not be here anymore.

She sighed and started towards the front of the house, muttering under her breath and aimed at the house that Shadowcrest wasted its time and could it please have some poptarts waiting for her when she got back to the kitchen.

"I'll uh...show you to the door."

"Don't worry if you don't get used to things." Her voice got a little softer. She hadn't been very pleasant this whole meeting with the bunny pants woman, and it wasn't the woman's fault. "I've been here a while and I'm still not used to what's goes on."

Jennifer nodded at Charlie and headed out the front door. She was already pulling out her radio so that she could call in uniforms to do the door to door follow up. No way was she doing that today.

If she saw Ms Zatara again, she'd have to apologize. There were a lot of things going on, but on the clock wasn't really the time to explain to somebody. Especially not when you'd been called out to their house because of screaming, and then you'd searched the place in case they were a murderer.

How unprofessional and uncoplike would it be for her to spout out everything she'd been through?

Jennifer looked at Charlie. She knew the we're going to talk look, and now she was ready for that talk, so she nodded as they left.
