hiding away (Dinah)
Jennifer had successfully managed to keep herself out of the sightlines of her superiors for the duration of the werecreature issues. She had managed to not go outside for more than a couple of minutes at a time, and had happily kept herself from being bitten during those times. It was a win win situation for her.

Especially when her boss had come down to tell her what a great job she'd done.

Who was she to tell him she'd done exactly nothing? That she'd actually disobeyed orders and not gone out looking for roaming polar bears and giant fucking chickens? She'd just smiled and said thank you, and hoped that that would be the end of it. If she never heard about this outbreak again in her life it would be too soon.

Of course, during all of it, she'd seen not hide nor hair of her partner. Which made her wonder and worry more than a little bit. Had he gotten caught up in all of it? Was he just out being Charlie? Was it, maybe, a little bit of both?

Before she could really get into the depths of wondering and pick up her phone to try to call him, her intercom buzzed.

"Yes?" Had this been there before? Had it ever been used previously? It seemed like such an outdated thing. Jennifer was pretty sure that it hadn't even been a part of the phone system. Usually people just knocked on her office door or sent an email. Or called.

"You have a visitor." Came the falsely cheery voice of the woman currently manning the front desk.

"Alright." She paused. "Send them in." She didn't mean to sound snarky about it. But why ask permission now to admit a stranger when it'd never been an issue before. How many people had just walked right through the station to find her previously? Maybe that thing with the crazy woman had gotten folk to beef up the security. She could only hope.

Jennifer kept her eyes on the door while she waited for her guest.

Dinah had chosen to go in the front door instead of the window. Knocking on police officer's windows was more of a Bat thing anyway. For that matter, she had opted for civilian clothes instead of one of her crimefighting costumes. She didn't have a secret identity to protect, so it seemed more sensible that way.

When she was buzzed in, Dinah made her way in the direction the receptionist had indicated for Jennifer's desk. She found the brunette fairly easily. Luckily, it was later in the evening so the station had cleared out somewhat. Dinah could only hope that that meant they wouldn't be overheard.

She stopped in front of Jennifer's desk, smiling a little bit at the woman who had put her job on the line for Jake. Dinah still wasn't sure how to convey her gratitude for that particular matter.

"Hi Jennifer," Dinah greeted her. Dinah waited for hopefully the glimmer of recognition, or perhaps a look of confusion if Jennifer perhaps didn't recognize her out of context. After all, last time she had been in her Black Canary costume in a meeting full of people.

She was kind of glad that the other desk in the moderate office was empty right now. This was not a thing she wanted to have to explain to Charlie. Oh, not because he wouldn't understand it. But because he'd understand it all too well and there would be all kinds of praise or something that she'd stood behind her beliefs instead of strictly sticking to the law.

A thing that she'd been used to doing back home, that standing behind what she thought was right, but wasn't quite used to doing here. She'd been so upright with procedure and sticking to what was in the books because she hadn't wanted to get into trouble, hadn't wanted to ruffle feathers. But that had all changed. Recently. Not with helping Jake, before that.

"Bl...Dinah." Jennifer stood. She was surprised to see this face here. It caused a wave of panic, actually. "Is everything alright? Is Jake alright? Jack Napier didn't... he's not harassing you again, is he?"

She hadn't been in touch with Dean since the werewolf stuff had started. So she didn't know if there was any news one way or the other. She was really out of the loop without him, in these matters. It wasn't really a nice feeling, now that she thought about it.

"No, Jake's fine." Dinah said, shaking her head. She was pretty sure Jennifer didn't need to know what Batman had done to the Joker. Plausible deniability was probably a good thing in this case.

"I actually wanted to stop by and thank you for your help."

She pulled out a communicator and handed it to Jennifer.

"I also wanted to give you this." She pointed to each button. "Back home, Batman and I used to work in cooperation with law enforcement whenever possible. The top button will get you through to me, and the bottom will get you to someone who can get ahold of Batman."

She smiled.

"At the very least, it's a lot more subtle than a gigantic spotlight with a Bat silhouette," she said with a laugh.

Jennifer relaxed. She was glad that no further harm had come to the boy. Or to anybody else. What they'd gone through had been plenty of punishment for all of them. Even though she hadn't stepped a foot inside, she still felt exhausted just thinking about it.

"I..." Jennifer looked at the thing in her hand and blinked. "You're giving me a way to contact you and... Batman?"

She wasn't quite sure what to think about it. She was flattered, she thought. They had taken her seriously, this meant, she was sure. She had done good, followed through. But she wasn't entirely sure what she would be able to do in the future.

"Forgive me, Dinah, I'm not entirely sure what you want me to do with this."

Dinah smiled and leaned against the desk opposite Jennifer's.

"As I said, back home we used to do our best to cooperate with the police force. Batman had a contact with Gotham's PD. There are a lot of weird things out there. Especially here. We've got a lot of experience handling the weird. So, if you ever come across something that you need a little extra help with, we're just a button push away."

She pushed off the desk and reached into her bag, retrieving a few file folders. She held them out to Jennifer.

"I know you already have a file on the Joker, so you probably have information on these as well. But just in case, there are a few metahuman criminals in the City that caused a lot of trouble back home. This is all the information we have on them."

Jennifer took a deep breath, looking at the thing. She understood what this meant. But she didn't really understand the depths of it. She'd never used the library before to read up on other people, because she found that creepy. And as a cop, thought it was a little bit stalkerish.

But she needed to know more about this thing she was being given.

"Oh, I've seen plenty of weird." She smiled at Dinah. And she thought about the case she was on, the one that was ongoing with the brutal murders. She didn't know if that was one of those things Dinah was talking about. Or if she meant stuff along the lines of the man called Joker. Jennifer would never have been able to handle that on her own.

She took the files and flipped through them quickly. There was a face she recognized. She went back to it and pulled it from the stack. She'd fought this woman.

"This one." She touched the picture of the ordinary looking doctor, and then traced the one opposite of it of her in a costume. "This woman was on top of the building across from here. She has an obsession with my partner. She kicked my ass."

"I'm sure you have," Dinah agreed. "With your job, I'm sure you've seen all kinds of weird." She smiled and leaned against the other desk in the office again. "And I'm sure you're doing just fine with it, but sometimes it helps to have a little extra back-up. And of course if you run into anything supernatural, you have Dean's number. Harry also used to work with the police department back where he came from as a special consultant on some of the weirder cases."

Dinah waited for Jennifer to flip through the stack. She looked over at the picture of Harley and tried to suppress a grimace.

"That's Harley Quinn. She was the Joker's girlfriend. She doesn't have any metahuman abilities, but she's as crazy as he is. Though you probably know that."

She looked at Jennifer, noting that she at least seemed to have healed up from the last time she'd seen the woman.

"If she gives you any more trouble, let me know, okay? I owe you a lot... for what you did for Jake. And if there's anything I can help with..."

"I don't think I'm the one that has to worry about her." Jennifer muttered, looking over the profile. "She only kicked my ass because I tried to get her off the roof. She was here for Charlie. Apparently he's encountered her before, too. But I haven't seen him very recently."

Jennifer looked up. "He's a little... eccentric. There's this whole zen thing and he likes fruit more than a fruitbat. Or ants. Or birds. Or... you get the idea. He wanders off sometimes. Never not doing his job, though."

She tugged on a hair and shoved the file away. She didn't want to be reading anything else about this woman right now. But she did want to show it to her partner so he could be better aware of what he'd gotten himself into.

"I didn't do what I did for Jake hoping for any favors. I want you to know that. I did it because it was the right thing to do."

Dinah frowned at the concern over Jennifer's partner. It seemed that she was definitely going to have to track down Harley Quinn and do what she could to get her locked up so she couldn't hurt anyone else.

She met Jennifer's eyes with a small appreciative smile.

"I know you weren't hoping for favors. But I appreciate it all the same, and the City needs more people like you working to protect its citizens. So if there's anything we can do to help you with that, we're here for you."

The we included more than just Batman but all of those that Dinah considered allies. If Jen ever did call for help, she would have no problem bringing Green Arrow or Batgirl or anyone else along if they were needed.

"Well." Jennifer looked at the device one more time before she put it in a desk drawer. She'd have to find a way to carry it with her all the time without it being in the way, or too noticeable. "The sentiment is mutual. If you guys need help again, I guess you can reach me just as easy on that thing as I can get you? Obviously I'm not trained like you all are, and I'm not superhuman in any way, but I'll do what I can."

She smiled at Dinah. "Besides. I'm sure you know what kind of secrets law enforcement can get into. You said you've worked with the cops in the past. I've got more leeway than a cop, seeing as I'm CBI. I can get into more files, not to mention hide things better. There's absolutely no mention of anything happening at Arkham the other night." She was pretty proud of that fact. She'd come back to the office to find that a couple of people had called in reports. Gunfire and the presence of vehicles where they shouldn't be when they shouldn't be. She'd gotten rid of it all.

Jennifer imagined somebody like Fred would have been able to do it faster, and more efficiently, but Fred wouldn't have been able to get in. At least, Jennifer didn't think so. She could be wrong.

"You wouldn't mind if I went to the library and looked all of this up, would you? I don't know much about any of it, and I kind of feel out of the loop."

Dinah smiled her appreciation at the offer for help from Jennifer. Fred most likely could have hacked into the CBI computers given the time-Dinah really didn't know, though Barbara had always seemed to be able to get information that she shouldn't be privy to. However, it would be much easier to get help from someone who had legitimate access to things.

"Yes, the comm-link goes both ways. Thank you. And you're welcome to look anything you'd like up in the library. We'll fall under the comic book and graphic novel section."

She hesitated for a second, thinking of the books she had looked at.

"Batman's got a lot of his own books, but you'll find me in the Justice League and Birds of Prey books. Just, er, don't mind the art. I swear I've never in my life worn a thong to fight crime."

Jennifer's brow raised. A thong to fight crime in. She didn't think such a thing would be comfortable. Which is probably why Dinah had mentioned it. Jen had no experience with comic books, but normal books could paint things in impossible lights, so why couldn't comic books as well.

"Isn't it weird for you that just anybody can go check out all your secrets? I mean, doesn't that..." Jennifer shook her head, trying to come up with the right word, and couldn't. There were lots of words, but none seemed to fit just what she was thinking.

"Oh, you have no idea," Dinah agreed. Then she looked at Jennifer, frowning. "Unless maybe you do?"

After all, Dean's life had been in a series of books. Not that it was her place to tell Jennifer that. For that matter, she hoped that they'd disappeared for good after he burned them.

"Most of my life is in those books. Even the parts I'd rather not think about myself, let alone have anyone else read. It's... a little crazy," Dinah said with a sigh. "But it's worse for those who had a secret identity before arriving here. And I suppose it's one way to give potential allies the chance to really know who they're working with."

She shrugged.

"If you have any questions about what you find out, you know how to get in touch with me."

"Actually, no." Jennifer shook her head. "I don't have any idea. I don't know if I've come from a book or whatever. But it's not like I have huge secrets that I want to keep..."

It came to her then, in a flash, and her hand went up to the tattoo. Oh, if she were in the library somewhere, just anybody could find out what it really meant.

That was a little humiliating.

"Oh, crud." Her hand moved from under her eye to over them both, she rubbed for a moment and then sat up again. "Well, I suppose if it's going to happen, it's going to happen, right? Your secrets are a little more dire than mine, and you seem to be doing okay with it all."

Dinah raised an eyebrow as Jennifer touched her tattoo, though she wasn't going to ask. As far as she was concerned, everyone was entitled to their privacy.

She gave a hollow laugh.

"I don't have a choice as to whether or not to be okay with it. So..." she said with a shrug. "I just have to accept it and move on. Believe me when I say that I'd rather not have my entire on again off again relationship with my ex-husband chronicled for all the world to see. Or... well, there are a few things that I'd rather were kept private."

"Well. You do have a choice. You've just made the one that any rational being would. To accept and move on. I'm sure that there are less stable people out there who are freaked out about what people can find out about them."

She was becoming curious, herself. She wondered if she came from a book, or a movie, or a comic book. Or maybe something else. A play? A poem? She felt too complete and not abstract enough to be a poem, though. Charlie could be a poem.

"It's a little overwhelming to think about, isn't it? All the information that's out there. What people could be from. I've never thought about it before."

Dinah thought of Dean's urgency to burn his books and wondered if sending Jennifer to the library was such a good idea. Granted, not that she was sending her anywhere, but entertaining that line of thinking that you could just look people up in the library might be a slippery slope.

"It is," she agreed. "When Harry first told me that some of the people I knew were comic book characters... well, I was pretty sure he was trying to accuse me of being delusional. But my theory is that we're not from whatever is in the library. I think that it's just possible that there are some creative types on other Earths that are tuned into our lives somehow. They probably don't even realize that it's more than just creative inspiration."

She pushed off the desk and raised an eyebrow at Jennifer.

"You could probably drive yourself nuts if you tried to go looking for information on everyone in your life here though. I'm not sure if everyone would even be in there, but all you'll ever get that way is a second hand story at best."

"But what if we are from them?" Jennifer wasn't entirely sure she could cope with being fictional. With her whole world being fictional. Maybe this library thing wasn't such a great idea. She'd been there once to get Charlie the books about Hannibal Lecter, but hadn't been back. Had not, in fact, even thought of looking herself up.

But there was a flip side to that, too, wasn't there?

"Think of all the dirt I could find on Dean." She didn't think he was hiding anything, and didn't think that he was pretending to be anything other than what he was, but she had a feeling he was a bit of a slut. How funny would it be to start rattling off the names of girls he'd been with? The look in her eyes might have been a little devilish.

"Do you feel fictional?" Dinah asked pointedly. "Because I feel pretty damn real, and that's enough for me."

It had to be enough, because going down that 'what if we're fictional?' path would be enough to drive anyone mad.

Dinah might have looked a little bit like a deer in headlights at Jennifer's glee at the thought of digging up dirt on Dean. Yeah, she really did not want to be in the middle of this conversation.

She had only started to read the first of the books about Dean before she'd realized how personal they were. And judging from his reaction to them, she'd always had a feeling that they only got worse.

She didn't know Jennifer very well, but she had a feeling that urging her not to go digging up Dean's dirt would only confirm that there was something about Dean in the library.

Not to mention the fact that she was starting to wonder if Dean actually had informed Jennifer and Murphy that he was sleeping with anyone else. If he hadn't, she thought each one deserved to know. He might have been a good friend, but no one deserved to be cheated on or led on. She knew that all too well.

"So, you and Dean?" she asked, not really sure how to politely phrase the question. Are you serious? Do you like him?

Why did she suddenly feel like she was in junior high?

"I guess... I feel real. I'm not sure what fictional feels like, though." She did want to stop being so metaphysical in her current thinking, though, so she dropped it. This was venturing into zen territory, and she'd only had about a day with that, and wasn't quite used to the circular and out of the box thinking.

The way that Dinah asked about Dean, though, that was more than enough to snap her back into reality and bring her mind to things that were more present.

"Like him? Yes, I suppose so. Serious, though? We've had more than a few fun nights, I don't think I'd call that serious. I don't think he thinks it's serious at all. I'm kind of just having fun, you know?" Jennifer wasn't sure she thought there could be anything serious there, she hadn't really thought about it much at all. "My boyfriend told me he loved me and wanted to marry me, dumped me immediately after, and then vanished from the City entirely. So I was kind of looking for a way to get my mind off of it."

He tilted her head. "Why do you ask, though? It sounds like you're a little unhappy about this line of questioning." Her cop instincts picked that up pretty easy.

"That really... makes no sense," Dinah said in response to Jennifer's boyfriend telling her he loved her and wanted to marry her and breaking up with her. "Then again, you're talking to someone who just broke up with her boyfriend because he's had a woman living in his apartment for the past few months even though he swears he loves me."

Dinah sighed. "So I'm pretty sure I'm not the expert on men and relationships."

"Why do you ask, though? It sounds like you're a little unhappy about this line of questioning."

Dinah was relieved that Jennifer wasn't saying she thought things were serious, but not so happy with being put on the spot.

She sighed.

"Dean's a good friend. He's been there for me quite a few times since I arrived here. So I really don't want to be in the middle of things," she said, knowing that that was just going to open up more questions.

Jennifer gave only a wry little smile and shook her head. This was all a little silly. Dinah wasn't silly, but her hesitation was. Jennifer was a big girl.

"Listen, Dinah. It sort of sounds like you are already, doesn't it? It's better that you get it out and stop worrying about it. What is it? He a mutant of some kind? Some sort of brain eating leech come out of his stomach to feed?"

"No leeches as far as I know," she said with a laugh.

She sighed. Getting put on the spot was not something she'd wanted. But she wasn't going to lie for Dean. Not about something like this.

"Like I said, Dean's a good friend and a good guy. Just maybe not a good guy to date at the moment if you're looking for something more serious."

"Ah." Jennifer nodded, knowing what Dinah was trying not to get at now. "Don't worry about me. If Dean is out there fucking some other girl, it's not my business. Even if he's sleeping with a different girl every night. I have no claim on him. I certainly have no play to say what he does with whom."

She did wonder if the other girl or girls knew what was going on, but it wasn't her place.

"Truly. Don't fret about it. For me, all this really is is trying to find steady ground after an earth shattering experience." She paused. "Several."

"Okay, good. I mean, not about the earth shattering experiences. But good that I don't have to worry about you not knowing..."

Jen shook her head. She didn't feel any different now that she knew Dean was up to shenanigans than she had previous to it. It might be the first time in her life that she'd done casual so casually.

She was kind of proud of herself.

Dinah was glad that Jen seemed to be honestly taking the news about Dean in stride. A little surprised, but glad that it wasn't going to cause hurt feelings.

She smiled slightly. She certainly had had a lot of wounds inflicted, but emotional and physical, over the years. But she wasn't interested in dwelling. She'd survived those things, and she wasn't going to sit around and stew about it all.

At least, not any more than she had to.

"Maybe," she said with a shrug. "I suppose you'll see some of it whenever you do your research. Not really a competition I'd want to win though."

She moved toward the door and then tilted her head toward Jen.

"All the same, if you ever need a girls' night out, you know how to get in touch with me. Nothing like commiserating over the bizarre things the men who've claimed to love us do, right?'

"It sounds good. I'd like that." She nodded. It would be good for her to have more female friends. More friends, period, really.

"And the same to you. Really." She touched the communicator and thought it might be odd to abuse it for the purposes of getting a girl's night out going, but that didn't mean she wouldn't do it.

"I hope everything keeps going well." Jennifer lifted her hand in a wave.
