Shared Shame (Lestat)
Eric was unsure how fair this whole thing was. High emotions had him turning into a tiny little bat in moments where he didn't really need to be small. Quite the contrary, actually. He needed to be big in most of those moments. While turning into a different creature did have it's intimidation and freak out effects, it just wasn't as good as being who he was.

Not to mention that Baba kept petting him and cradling him. He didn't want to admit that he liked it. He always acted grumpy toward such coddling, though he suspected that she knew he enjoyed it, or he would have flown away. Though, he supposed, if she wanted to keep him around, all she had to do was fucking close her hand.

He hadn't seen her yet tonight. He wondered where she might be. He waited at the bar as long as he could before his staff started to irritate him, then walked out. As much as he wanted to know what was taking her so long to come around, he just couldn't be at Fangtasia right now.

Eric set off, unconsciously looking for Lestat. The other vampire might not know much about shifters and weres, but he would at least understand how humiliating all of this was. He was hoping he could find a companion for his woe, somebody to commiserate with.

Lestat had gotten Willow safely home. Her wing... arm... whatever seemed to be okay, so he'd left her to rest and gone back to his own apartment.

He fully expected to turn. The vampire blood could heal things, certainly. But this did not seem to be something that was to be healed. He figured it to be something supernatural, and those things, he was not immune to.

He'd rested in his bedroom for the day, and upon rising that evening, felt very strange. Everything about his body felt wrong. And then there was pain, and he was closer to the floor. His feet were bird feet. His back felt very heavy.

He sighed. A bird? What kind of bird?

With great difficulty he hopped onto the antique sofa in his entry way, which was just beneath a large mirror.

Oh, good Christ.

He concentrated and fanned his tail out. Well, at least I'm pretty.

Then he tried to concentrate on shifting back to his normal self. Would it hurt? He wasn't sure. He did not feel entirely safe going out of his apartment this way. Did he still have fangs? Lestat opened his beak and looked in the mirror. Beak, check. Absurd little ploomy thing on the top of head, check. Fangs? It seemed they were still there, but absurdly tiny. Were they merely part of the beak?

He felt many restless minds wandering about, one familiar. He did not relish the idea of this particular mind knowing where he rested. He'd have to gain control. He'd have to change back. He did not know if that was possible.

He eventually got the hang of it, put clothes on, and left, setting out to find Eric.

I am trying to find you, he told him, if he was listening. I think I have a problem.

He heard the voice of the other vampire in his head and found himself incredibly irritated. Had he not already told Lestat what he felt about this sort of thing? But it did make finding him easier.

"When I said to stay out, I meant it." He said, once finally coming face to face with the other. "That's the last time I'm going to warn you about it."

Eric motioned toward a direction neither of them had come in, one blessedly free of other people, who might overhear what they had to say. Eric knew that he did not want his problem known to many others, and whatever Lestat's was, he was willing to bet that it shouldn't be broadcast, either. Though it was true that they could each speak in a whisper so low that it was certain nobody else would hear, Eric was in no mood for whispering.

"Your problem?"

He rolled his eyes, at the comment. There were situations in which breaking the rules and annoying people were called for. This was one of them. Eric could endure the annoyance so that they could find each other to speak.

Lestat took a blue, shimmering feather out of his pocket and held it out to Eric.

"Wolf bite," he said. "Interesting side effects."

"Wolf bite." Eric repeated. He sighed then. That was so much more dignified. "Lucky you. I got pecked by a chicken. A really fucking big chicken."

He wasn't going to tell that he knew what the chicken was on other days. Or who it belonged to. Those were secrets that he didn't need to spread. But he guessed that pretty much everybody within this city's walls would have heard of or seen news of the house sized chicken by now, and that it was safe to share.

"I, too, have had some interesting side effects." He examined the feather. It was decidedly that of a peacock. It was unavoidable to think it was any other thing. "But it seems like you might be in more dire straights than me."

Dignified? Lestat would have laughed heartily at that, had he persisted in using the Mind Gift. He'd run off intent on killing the wolf, like a goddamn teenager showing off.

... a really fucking big chicken.

Lestat arched a brow. Huh. But it didn't sound like Eric was turning into a bird. How did any of this work?

More dire straits, indeed. "So what happens to you, after your encounter with the really fucking big chicken?" he asked.

Hey, he'd shown Eric his. And he was flailing for help. "And how do we undo it?"

Eric didn't want to answer the question. He may not have been something as asinine as a peacock, but it wasn't as if he'd been gifted with anything higher on the evolution hierarchy.

So he skipped to the second one first. That one was easier for him to say, and it actually made him a lot more angry.

"I don't know how we undo it. But I'll be damned if I'm going to remain a fucking shifter for the rest of my life. Brainless thugs and useless animals, the lot of them. I've never before put myself on a level with them, and I refuse to do so now. I don't know if this is some kind of idiot curse or disease, but I can tell you this: This will be fixed, and soon, or I am going to be very. Very. Angry."

Angry forever. Eric didn't exactly want to live a life like that. He rather enjoyed himself the way that he was. Capable of anger and even extreme rage. Mildly prone to violence. But as a whole, in love with living.

He took a deep breath that he didn't need and spat the words out on his exhale. "A really fucking small bat. I got pecked by a really fucking big chicken and now I become a really fucking small bat."

There was so much venom and disdain in the way Eric said 'shifter.' What was his problem? Lestat figured--knew, even though he had not encountered-- that such creatures existed.

Wait.
Wait.

A bat?

Lestat's mouth twitched into a small smile for a flicker of a second. There was some wonderful irony, here.

A peacock. And a tiny bat.

Why, God? This made no sense. They were predators.

"I'm confused," Lestat said. "Is this... why not predators? I mean, it seems arbitrary, if not outright insulting and cruel. I've seen panthers wandering the streets, birds of prey... and yet we, the actual predators, are... tiny things. And showy things."

"I don't have any fucking idea the way this works. Not here. I know how it works where I come from. You get bit by a fucking panther, you become a fucking panther. Nowhere in logic, or in the history I know, does somebody get pecked by a chicken to become a bat. It just doesn't work that way."

Eric looked at Lestat. He was getting really angry, which was not this vampire's fault, currently. He didn't like the idea of being a shifter, and especially did not like the idea of being a really small bat.

"There is no reason for this. No reason. A vampire who has been bitten by something does not become that thing! I have only seen a very few cases of any kind of crossover, and it's always weres or shifters being changed into vampires, and they're all whiney bitches, and nobody wants a goddamned thing to do with them."

Letting himself get so worked up wasn't the best of ideas. But Eric didn't know that. He knew that regular shifters could get sprung by their emotions, but they were usually young and/or weak. Eric didn't think of himself as either.

So he was a little surprised when he was suddenly looking at the toe of Lestat's shoe from a similar height.

"Fuck."

Eric had some quality anger. Lestat was borderline amused.

He was correct, there was no reason for it. Once Eric said they're all whiney bitches, Lestat broke into a grin, unable to stop himself from thinking of Louis. He clapped a hand over his mouth until the grin went away. Eric was angry enough to take the grin badly and start trying to slap it off his face.

Then, suddenly, the viking was gone. Or not gone, but...

.....tiny. And on the ground. And a bat.

Fuck.

"Oh, Jesus tapdancing Christ," Lestat said, sighing. He bent down to where Eric was, now. The little bat was just at the end of his very nice, very expensive black boot. That was unfortunate. Was this better than being a peacock?

The worst part was the bat was kind of adorable.

"Eric." To his credit, Lestat did not smile. Or laugh. "You've got to calm down."

Eric was looking up at Lestat, who, though he had knelt down, was still hundreds of times bigger than he was. It was pretty goddamned humiliating. To be seen as this tiny bat. This itty bitty little thing. His hulking Viking body squeezed into it. It had hurt, again, becoming this. Eric did not think there would ever be a time that it didn't hurt. There was too much bulk to displace.

He muttered something in his tiny voice about Lestat being captain obvious.

Eric pulled himself out of the pile of clothes that was surrounding him and placed himself on the sidewalk. There were bugs flitting here and there, but he fought the urge. He was not going to debase himself further in front of Lestat. No more than he needed to, anyway. The best way to keep himself from eating insects was to get away from them.

"Gather my clothes." Eric said, not loudly. "We need to get inside somewhere."

He was also in no mood to run into a police officer when he returned to himself again. He would be stark naked then, and it was just more trouble he didn't want to face.

Lestat chuckled, just once, and then stopped immediately. It was more like a chortle. But the bat voice was just absurd. Eric had to know that.

Gather my clothes...

"Yes, mon petite bat," Lestat said, picking up the pile of clothes and tucking them under one arm. Inside somewhere...

He still didn't want Eric to know where his home was. They might be cordial, but Eric could end his life easily. "Where is your club? I've seen flyers for it, it must be mostly empty at this hour. It's still early. And surely you've got an office or something there."

That seemed like the best idea, if he could just hold off being a peacock until he didn't have to carry anything anymore.

That one laugh, Eric would allow. He knew how stupid this looked. He knew that he was getting away lightly with Lestat holding back what must be gales of laughter welling up inside of himself at the sight of the itty bitty creature.

Eric flapped his wings and got himself off of the ground, bringing himself to hover in front of Lestat's face. He knew that he was one of the only types of bats in the world that could hover like this. He also knew he was the goddamned smallest.

"Your guess is as good as mine as to where the club is right now." He frowned, but it likely did not come across. "Have you forgotten being inside already? How do you survive so long with such a short memory?"

Before Lestat could answer, Eric flew a little higher, about even with the nearby rooftops. Then he looped back down slowly.

"If it stays put, it's currently only about a block to our right."

Lestat rolled his eyes.

"I didn't forget. I meant I'd seen flyers around here for it, so is it around here? Even with the telepathy, things are goddamned hard to find here."

Still, he could have worded things better. Perhaps he was thrown off by the tiny floating bat.

He nodded. Then to Fangtasia they would go, and deal with this in private. "Can you change yourself back? How did you do it before? I'm still not sure how I managed it."

"The flyers have made their way everywhere. I don't even put them out anymore. They just appear." He didn't really feel like the club needed the constant ads, but apparently the City did.

"I can. Just not when I'm so pissed off." Eric sighed, a tiny bat sigh. He kept up easily with Lestat while the other vampire walked. Really, he could have done with faster movement, but he didn't think he could keep up with vampire speeds like this.

"It's just a matter of will. Mostly." He could see the lights of the bar's neon sign a few blocks away. Further than it had been when he'd been higher and seen it, but not too far. He just hoped this wasn't some neverending sidewalk, here to mock them both. "Extreme emotion brings it out. Does it with real shifters and weres, too. The night seems to trigger the change, which is not part of the lore I know. In my world, even during the full moon they still have a choice. It might be hard to resist, and they might get grumpy about it the next day, but they don't have to."

He wondered if Eric simply did not have better control of his emotions, then. Lestat could not, he didn't think, change at will. This really made sense to him though; after centuries, he still operated mostly on whim and what would get a rise out of people. He was very mercurial. No wonder he couldn't control something like this.

The idea of having to change really bothered him. Lestat would do nothing against his will. He set his jaw and kept walking, mildly annoyed as well that he couldn't fly there. This was all so inconvenient, keeping up with a tiny bat, and...

It was a good thing that they were basically at the door, now, because in another second, Lestat was not a vampire anymore, but a Peacock trapped inside a jacket. Eric's clothes fell on the ground.

"I hate everything," he muttered.

Eric turned just in time to see Lestat vanish into his own clothing. He was looking at a peacock. He would have smiled, had he been able to form such a thing with his bat face.

The little creature flew forward and landed on the edge of the jacket, then dangled down to look into the depths of it. He saw a shadowed birdface looking back at him, and he could tell from the thing's eyes that it was not very happy.

"I think you have reason to." Eric agreed.

He wasn't sure what should be done now. He couldn't help Lestat as he was, and he wasn't sure that he could get himself to change back just yet. His anger had dulled, that was true, but it had been replaced by extreme amusement. Could he concentrate enough to become himself at this moment?

"You're." Eric bit back a laugh. "Very pretty."

Lestat wanted to sigh, but it wasn't working. Instead, his tail rose and fell, fanning out and making the clothes move off the ground.

... very pretty.

"I know," he said, somewhat brightly. "I saw. Earlier. I'm a lovely shade of blue, actually. This is all just really a pain in the ass."

He looked past Eric at the door to Fangtasia. The knob was much too high for either of them to reach in their current states, without any kind of opposable digits.

First he'd need to get out of his jacket and shirt. The shoes and pants weren't a problem. Lestat hopped right out of them. But the jacket was cavernous. There was a lot of flapping, a lot of head ducking, and a string of French curses before he was free.

"How do we get in?" he asked.

Lestat was nothing if not an egotistical, vain bastard. Which Eric could appreciate more than he maybe wanted to admit. He didn't think he'd be so happy about being a peacock, but at least Lestat could remark so on his own beauty.

Eric could do not a whole lot more than remark on his own incredible smallness. He was still having issues with the idea of such a tall form as his own being crammed into what had to be the littlest mammal on the planet.

He watched Lestat struggle with his clothing, unable to do anything to help. Not that he could honestly say he would have, if he could have. The peacock flailing about and stuck was amusing. A sight that he would not forget any time soon.

But the other vampire did have a good point. How were they supposed to get inside? There was a tiny bat sigh. He had no idea.

"It'll be too loud in there to try to get anybody's attention. We could try around back, but that door is not kept open often. I don't really allow it. I tend to get very angry when it is." But oh, how he was wishing now for a disobedient employee.

"There are no windows, that's not a route we can look for. We might get kicked or crushed if we attempt to go in the front door, anyway. I would so hate to see your beautiful tail mangled." There was more than a hint of snark in his tone at the last.

Lestat sighed. His peacock chest rose and fell and puffed out absurdly.

He couldn't glare, and he knew it. The eyes were all wrong on this thing. At least with Raglan James he had fucking facial expression.

He didn't want his tail crushed. He hadn't thought about people stepping on it.

No windows meant that even trying to get to a window was pointless. "I guess we wait. For someone to come out of one of the doors. I can try to use the Mind Gift on someone to make them come out," he said.

He was talking to a tiny, tiny bat. A Viking bat. The absurdity of all of this was not lost on him.

"Do you know the name of someone who might be inside?"

Eric would be surprised if the peacock had access to many of his powers in this form. Eric knew that he did not. He also realized another thing, and he didn't know if Lestat knew it yet.

"You're alive. Do you know that?" He remembered how he had felt when Baba had told him he was warm and had a heart beat. And then that need to eat the bugs. Unpleasant.

He tried to think of somebody who might be in there right now. His staff was large and rotating, and he didn't much pay attention to their schedules. If he was short staffed, then he would look and see who was missing. What he really needed was a business manager as he'd had back home.

"If you can do it, try for Dannielle."

Alive?

Lestat considered this and concentrated.

He could feel a heartbeat in his chest. It was strange. He'd felt this while in Raglan James's body, yes, but this was different. It was not a human heart. It felt alien.

He tilted his peacock head and felt the bones in his neck move against each other and pop--another new sensation.

Then there was a wave of panic. Alive meant he could die, and in this form, he likely would. He was a goddamn bird. With tiny fangs, yes, but still.

Dannielle.

Lestat concentrated. All that happened was his tail popped up into an elaborate display.

"Okay," he said, sounding very deflated. "Clearly that doesn't work."

Eric did flinch when Lestat's elaborate plumage suddenly expanded. It was about the last thing that he'd expected to happen. There was a great ruffling of feathers and suddenly he was looking at the almost prismatic display again.

"What the fuck."

He looked around, obviously they weren't getting into Fangtasia right now. They needed some place. They couldn't be exposed like this. They were both living, they were both small, and they were both annoyed. And he was having a little bit of trouble keeping his eyes off of the bugs that were flying around the neon lights of the club's sign.

"Give me a second. I'll fly to see if there's someplace we can go close by. We'll have to leave our clothes, but maybe if we're near enough, we can change and retrieve them fast." He eyed Lestat. "Or I can."

"I didn't plan that," Lestat said. If he could've blushed he would've been doing it. Or maybe he was doing it, but it wasn't noticeable.

Face feathers.

Eric was going to fly. Lestat didn't know if peacocks could fly.

"I'm... going to try... to follow you. Which probably means I'll be dead shortly."

He looked upward at the building and the buildings around it. They were very tall, but that could be because of the new smaller size of his peacock self. This was not going to be fun, he didn't think.

"You can fly." Eric said. "Peacocks can fly. But that tail is unwieldy. You're unused to it, so I thought it would be quicker if you stayed. But if you wish to come, you may."

He would have shrugged if his little body had a way to do so. But it didn't seem to have the muscle knowledge.

Eric took to the sky very easily. His tiny body fluttered in a circle upward until he was where he wanted to be. He hovered there and watched for Lestat to begin. Eric thought the flying part itself would be fairly easy for him, if he could get used to the wings, which would be simple if Lestat allowed the animal's instinct to take over.

Then again, Lestat might be too full of himself to allow the peacock to get through and he might try to fly like he normally did.

It was the tail that he thought there would be a problem with. It was so very large and heavy despite being made of feathers. If Lestat didn't compensate for it well enough, he'd fall and break his neck.

That would be the end of Lestat.

And what a humiliating way for a vampire to go.

Lestat decided to try to test this before really trying it. He backed up, slowly and carefully, and then turned around and faced the lot and sidewalk outside of Fangtasia.

He ran on his peacock legs until he felt he had enough momentum, and then he tried to take off. He managed alright, considering. He did get his tail off of the pavement. But the balance a peacock would have, innately, for that tail, was lacking. This was not something he could do over a long distance, or for very long. Not without hurting himself.

Lestat landed and turned back around, head down.

"I can't. You go," he said. "I can learn to do this but not quite so quickly."

Eric's tiny bat head nodded. He was actually impressed that the other vampire was able to do as much as he had. He wasn't sure he would have been able to do that much, considering the tail. Not that he'd admit as much to Lestat. Ever.

He flew quickly, darting in and out of places, looking for something unoccupied. He couldn't go into a house if humans lived there, and he wasn't sure he was ready for that bit of information to be known.

Lucky for them both, Eric discovered a mostly burned out husk of a house. Not even vagrants living there. It was only half a block away from Fangtasia, and hopefully it would stay there.

Quicker than he'd gone, he flew back. He wasn't looking for a hiding place any longer, so didn't need to be careful about it.

"There's a house." Eric said, remaining in his hover. "It's not far. Nobody is in it, and nobody will be in it. There's enough of it left to keep us concealed. Try to fly again." Eric paused. "If that doesn't work, you ran pretty well."

Lestat blinked. He supposed he'd have to leave their clothing where it was. Which would be quite awkward once they managed to change back.

Half a block.

He didn't say anything, just started running to build up speed, going toward the tiny hovering bat to follow him.

The trip to the house felt long, but didn't take much time at all. Watching over Lestat as much as he could, Eric led the way. Not that he could have done anything, should somebody decide to jump out at the peacock and try to grab him. Maybe swoop down and be annoying at them.

He really hated this tiny body. He didn't like the way it made him feel. Helpless. Powerless. Incapable. He had not felt that way in a very long time, perhaps when his elder brother had died, and it was unpleasant.

"There." He said, when they finally approached.

Eric swooped in through an upper burn hole, nodding Lestat toward one just below it that he should be able to get through.

"Now." He was out of sight, out of immediate danger, and growing less frustrated. "If I can change back, I'll be able to retrieve our clothing very quickly. But you're going to have to stop being absurd."

It wasn't really meant as an insult. But Lestat seemed so proud of his feathers, and if he mentioned it again, Eric was going to lose all control of his ability to contain his laughter. And if those feathers came up in that display again, Eric had no idea what he was going to do.

"I'm what?"

Up until this sentence was spoken, Lestat didn't know peacocks could have a tone when they spoke. But he did have one. And it was noticeable.

"What, exactly, is that supposed to mean?"

All that was missing was Lestat asking if he looked fat as a peacock, or something equally ridiculous. If he could've put his hands on his hips, he would've.

He went through the hole in the wall to the inside of the house. "Is this because I'm a peacock?!"

"Not entirely." Eric was settled on the floor. He didn't want to have to concentrate on anything else while he was trying to change back.

"It's mostly the tail." he paused. "And please don't talk about how pretty you are for at least the next ten minutes."

It was the nicest way to put it. Nice for Eric anyway. He eyed Lestat for a moment and then shut his eyes to shut out the world. He felt himself calming down from the frustration and flurry of the evening.

He felt himself change back.

Eric didn't say anything to Lestat when he changed, he just moved quickly to get their clothing and return. It only took a few seconds. He had what they needed, and no longer had to worry too much about what Lestat might say.

Lestat growled.

He, as a peacock, growled. Talk about how pretty he was?! Why, Eric had some nerve! Who did he think he was, anyway?! He was A BEAUTIFUL PEACOCK and he was a vampire of great power, who had sipped the blood of Christ and the blood of the Queen!

When Eric was gone, the enraged peacock changed itself back into a vampire.

And once Eric was back, that vampire glowered at him.
