Wolfkiller (open)
Giant escaped Zoo wolf.

He couldn't help but smile.

He'd heard thoughts from people in the City, too. What was going on was on a great many minds, all over the place. Thoughts were easy to catch, even without trying. He knew it wasn't just any wolf. That made it all the more attractive.

Wolfkiller.

The word used to ring in his head, centuries ago. Magnus's taunt, then Nicki's unexpected present-- the wolf-fur cloak and boots. He smiled.

The City was not always a good place for a creature like Lestat. He had not hunted anything to kill it in quite a long time.

This was perfect. And Lestat loved the idea of ridding the City of the wolf, just as he had rid the Auvergne of wolves all those years ago.

He wished he still had the cloak and the boots.

He sat silent on a rooftop, crouched, watching the wolf walk down a mostly empty street. Two others appeared behind it.

"Not as advertised," he said in a growl under his breath.

Willow couldn't figure out what was going on. Yesterday she'd gotten bitten by a stupid vorpal bunny of all things, and today... once the sun had gone down, she'd fallen over in pain. When her vision had cleared...

She flapped her wings again before settling on a building to perch. This had to be that stupid rabbit's fault. There might have been a way to change back, but she wasn't going to find it in this shape.

A growl caught her off guard, and her body's reflexes took over, sending her into the air. The wolves in the street were clear to her eyes - too clear for comfort, almost. The man sitting upon the building was also crystal-clear, and this one familiar. Willow coasted on a soft breeze, back-flapped on the thermals, and settled down beside the vampire.

'Umm. Hi, Lestat.'

At least she could still speak to people's minds. That didn't take more than concentration and a little focus.

Lestat turned toward the noise.

The bird. The bird was talking to him, and knew his name, and he understood the bird. He smirked. So what everyone'd been saying and thinking seemed to be more than just a theory. That, or this was someone with a lot of shapeshifting power. Lestat didn't think there was anyone here like that. He was pretty certain he would have noticed a shifter's thoughts amongst all the human ones.

"Can you do me a favor and say 'nevermore?'" He waited a second. "Hi. Which one are you? Have we met, or are you merely telepathic outside of this state?"

He turned his attention back to the wolves. They were continuing down the street as though they had forever to get to where they were going.

Willow rolled her eyes and looked up at him, tilting her head to do so. 'No, I won't say that. How typical. You'd think you'd never met a black bird that could... oh, I guess it's kind of a one-time thing.'

She sighed to herself, and tried to speak. Again, all that came from her beak was an odd squawking sound. 'I'm Willow. Some... rabbit bit me yesterday, and now I'm a bird. And...' She followed his gaze down to the wolves, and then squawked again when the pieces clicked in place.

'That doesn't make sense. If I got bitten by a were-bunny, why didn't I do bunny too?'

How interesting!

"I have no idea, ma chere. One moment."

With that, he jumped from the roof and landed almost soundlessly behind one of the three wolves. It was one of the two hanging behind the largest one, and had a thick, gray coat and bright eyes.

Willow, is this a person?

The wolf had not heard him land. He was, after all, an excellent predator. Lestat raised his eyes to where Willow was perched. Can you tell? If it isn't a person I want to kill it and help end this mess.

Willow watched from her rooftop. She wasn't confident enough in her ability to fly to be as silent as the vampire was. And she certainly didn't want to attract the attention of wolves.

At Lestat's question, she blinked. Ooh. That was clever. She watched the wolf for a few moments, reaching out to it with her magical senses. 'Yes,' she answered after a moment. 'That one is. The one beside it is a real wolf, but the first one.... I'm not sure what it is.'

The wolf was larger than the others, but she couldn't feel it at all with her magic. Not at all.

Lestat stepped away from the wolf...person. This was a shifter. How was that possible? How was it that a shifter existed here and he'd never... there'd been one he could remember clearly. A true werewolf. And a girl, long ago, and she'd died. But no one recently, no one...

Well, let's see if I can hurt it.

Lestat smiled. He'd be sure not to fatally injure the human wolf, should it attack. The other two, well...

The vampire rose into the air with a thought and quickly flew out of sight entirely, then dropped down with great speed, landing on the largest wolf's back.

It growled, and bucked, and threw him off like he was trying to ride a rodeo horse.

Lestat landed on his back, shocked, as all three wolves approached him.

He bared his fangs. The human wolf backed up. The others continued advancing.

Willow squawked, got flustered, squawked again, and then resumed her magical telepathy. 'Be careful!' she said, as the vampire leaped into the air. She quickly lost track of him until the werewolf below growled in sudden pain and anger.

Crap crap crap! And okay, Lestat was pretty scary when he was in full vampy mode. But that didn't mean she wanted to see him torn apart by wolves!

Concentration and focus, concentration and focus. Willow squeezed her eyes shut and spread her wings as she tried to raise an arm. 'Defendarus!' she mentally shouted, concentrating on a solid wall of magic between Lestat and the approaching wolves.

He'd won a fight between himself and three wolves as a mortal. This shouldn't be hard, no matter WHAT that one wolf was. Lestat was not afraid; at any rate, the thing couldn't kill him.

Lying there, calculating his next move, Lestat felt a shove. It was like an invisible wall had gone up between the largest wolf and where he was.

Lestat stood, annoyed. How is that thing that strong?!

He leapt up again, disappearing to the wolves and likely to Willow, and came down behind the true wolf, the one Willow had pointed out as a natural animal. It reared and lunged at him, and Lestat grabbed its neck and squeezed.

When he dropped it, it was dead.

Defending champion, almost three centuries running.

Willow was startled by his question. 'Well excuse me, Mister Immortal Man, but I don't like seeing my friends get hurt! It's just a little magic.'

Then he jumped over her wall and struck down the wolf. Willow was stunned for a moment at how quick it had been. 'Oh. Maybe... you don't need my help.' But the barrier stayed where it was. Another wall shifted into place, keeping the remaining wolf-shaped beasts apart from one another, so that Lestat only had to face one at a time.

His quip made her giggle. The sound came from her beak like a tittering cry, but still recognizable as laughter.

A laughing bird. This was new. And it felt a little like sanity slipping.

The biggest wolf growled and showed Lestat its teeth. The thing was huge. He hadn't fully realized it until now. Another barrier went up. Much as he was glad for Willow's help, Lestat was annoyed that he could not just charge through and use himself as an immortal battering ram, rending wolves into pieces as he moved. He knew she meant well, so he said nothing.

As the largest wolf gnashed its teeth and growled at the barrier, the human wolf charged Lestat from the other side. He turned just before it landed, preternaturally quickly, stance wide. I don't want to hurt you. I know that you're not really a wolf.

The wolf lunged anyway, and its teeth caught Lestat's hand. There weren't punctures, just a scrape that healed almost immediately.

Shit.

The literal birds-eye-view was amazingly clear, and Willow chirped at the sight of the blood. 'The wolf is in control, Lestat. Can you knock it out without killing it?' She might have been able to with magic, but she would have to divert some energy from the barriers for it. It wasn't easy using magic in this form, but with enough concentration, she was managing.

Of course, she could try harder, but after last night, Willow didn't feel comfortable enough to push herself.

I don't know. I can try.

Lestat was much stronger than a human. Even holding back, against a wolf that was smaller than a human, he could fatally injure the wolf. And he was Wolfkiller, not Wolfwhisperer. This thing wanted to hurt him.

The vampire pulled back and bared his teeth at the wolf. "You already drew blood!" he said to it, aloud. He stared at it, then decided there was an easy way to make this stop.

He lunged at the wolf, grabbed it, and bit into the back of its neck. The fur and the wolf's hide weren't a match for his teeth. When the blood began to flow, Lestat was surprised to find the life of the person, not the wolf, in the blood.

This was a woman. Her name was Jessica. Lestat heard the wolf whimper in pain and let go. He hadn't taken enough blood to truly harm the wolf or the woman, but he'd taken enough that she was scared and backed away, receding into an alleyway and not coming back out.

Her heart had leaped into her throat when Lestat attacked. So unlike the vampires she knew. He was death incarnate. But the flash of blood was quickly gone, and the wolf running off. Willow watched the wolf run away, watching and feeling until it she was certain it was far enough away.

'I guess that worked.' She would have preferred the wolf not be hurt at all, but so long with the Slayer, she knew that wasn't always an option. It still hurt to think she might have handled things peacefully, if only...

No. No time to think about that. Even with her form changed, it was still too dangerous to let that part of her loose. 'Are you okay?' Then, cautiously, 'Should I let the last one go?'

She was afraid of that one, and the fear came through her mental voice. She couldn't sense that wolf, not on any magical level. It worried her. She didn't know if it was the wolf deflecting her power, the City keeping it hidden, or something else was going on. But it worried her all the same.

Lestat turned and looked at the last wolf. It was on the other side of Willow's barrier, teeth bared.

I can try to hurt it. Should I try to hurt it? I can't get to it with your wall there.

He had a feeling the damage was already done. He'd already been bitten, but he could try to stop anyone else from being bitten.

I'm not sure that me biting him is going to stop him. Lestat flashed his teeth at it anyway.

'I...' Willow hesitated. She wished she had researched this. But she didn't know what that wolf was.

'I think it needs to be stopped. But I don't know what it is. It could be human, Lestat...'

It could be human.

God. Damn. It.

That meant it could be innocent. An innocent person. He really preferred not to do that---harm relatively innocent people. If he did, it was usually a loss of control on his part, and it happened very, very rarely.

I don't want to just leave it... Willow, take the wall away.

He could at least try to hurt it, a little. It felt stupid and futile and Lestat wanted to be done with this already.

'Alright... but be careful.' She didn't have a very good feeling about this. The feathers on her neck were standing upright as she released the barriers.

She could hear something, faintly. A dull drumming sound. The beat seemed familiar, but she couldn't quite place it...

The wall was gone. It was like it had never been there. Lestat was silently in awe of Willow's abilities. Had Merrick or Rowan ever done anything like this? Merrick had done a great many things, yes. Some involving Claudia's ghost. David called her the Witch of Endor. But making things out of nothing?

He'd never seen either of them do that. Rowan's power seemed more organic, tied to her emotions. Willow seemed to do this like it was nothing.

The wolf behind the wall growled at him and showed its teeth. Lestat lunged at it, and it swatted him, scratching a hole in his jacket and tearing the flesh of his upper arm.

She was focused on the fight below. Trying to work out how she could try a spell on a wolf that she couldn't sense in any other way. She didn't see the attack coming. Only heard an unearthly scream at the same instant claws dug into her flesh.

Her scream came out as a terrified cawing. She tried to lift her arms, but wings moved differently, and she was lost in a tumble of fur, feathers, and painful claws.

HELP! she screamed in her mind, unable to make the magic work in her distress.

Lestat was halfway into a second, much more successful lunge at the wolf when Willow's scream happened in his head.

The wolf looked confused at the vampire's disappearance. One second he was there, ready to bite it, and the next he had vanished.

Not really vanished, just moved faster than it could track.

He'd flown back up to the roof immediately. Willow could take care of herself as a human, certainly. But as a bird, she had some new problems.

A cat had her partially in its mouth when Lestat got there.

Below, the wolf ran off, down a dark alley and out of site. The vampire didn't have time to track it. He didn't want his nice new friend to be catfood.

He hissed at the cat, and bared his teeth. In return, it arched its back, but it did let go of Willow and back up.

"Good kitty. Scram!"

Lestat bent down in an attempt to be on eye level with Willow. When that didn't work, he gently picked her up, looking at her wings and body for injuries.

"That is the normal success rate of my plans," he said, dejectedly. "We both got hurt. I wonder if I get to be a bird, too."

Her wings were bloodied, but the wounds seemed to be healing on their own. Willow's heart was beating wildly, and had she been in human form, she would have been taking panicked breaths and trembling. As a raven, her body shook in fear, but didn't struggle against the gentle hands holding her.

'Flying is nice,' she managed to stammer after a few moments. 'But I think I'll skip the stupid feline predators.' She still wasn't making any move to go. His hands were gentle, safe. Nice things to have after nearly being eaten.

Her head shifted to look back at him. 'You think you'll change too? Even though you're already a vampire?'

It did not escape Lestat's attention that the last time he'd held this amount of power in his hands he had been embracing Akasha. Perhaps Jesse was something of an even match for Willow. He'd think on that.

Was it a redhead thing? Curious.

But she was alright, and that was what mattered.

"I've never been much of a cat person," he said.

And he missed Mojo.

He nodded. "I think that's how this works. Isn't it? Didn't you get bitten, or scratched, or something? You didn't just come over all winged this morning, all on your own, along with at least a quarter of the City's population."

The vampire smiled. "I'm sure I've been through worse. I just hope I'm not a turtle or something. Can you fly?"

He petted one of her wings, trying to see where the wounds were.

'I was bitten...' by a bunny. The second part of that wasn't projected, but thought clearly enough that he'd probably heard it. 'An evil bunny. Some jerk who insulted me, and I got angry, and then he... well, he turned into a bunny and bit my ankle.'

She extended her wings gently, surprised when she couldn't feel any wounds. Just some soreness under the muscles and tendons. 'I... I think so. Um. Maybe.'

And it would be really, really awkward to ask him to carry her home. But being turned into a bird wasn't half as terrifying as her own helplessness had been. His hands weren't particularly warm, but they were strong and gentle and she felt ridiculously safe with him.

'I want to write about you,' she blurted out. 'For my personality class, we have to do a full case history on someone, real or fictional, and since you're kinda both, and kinda fascinating too, I wanted to write about you.' Her delicate cough came out as a faint caw. 'If you don't mind.'

Maybe he'd let her perch on his shoulder so they could talk about it while he walked her home. Yeah. That was something he could do. And talking about schoolwork would help her stop thinking about giant cat teeth.

"Evil bunny?" Lestat chuckled.

He watched her move her wings gingerly. Maybe was not a good enough answer. He'd be getting her home, lest another kitty or something worse grab her up. Powerful witch she may be, but Willow seemed unsure of whether or not she was really okay.

Lestat opened his hands to let Willow fly, if she wanted to, but he nodded at her. Where to?

"Write about me?" He grinned. "I am NOT fictional."

He waited for her to lead the way, or direct him.

"I do love talking about myself. And reading about myself." The grin grew. "Oooh! You think I'm fascinating?"
