Going through the motions [Sam]
The City Park.

They probably weren't related. A giant wolf goes missing from the zoo and a man is spotted running naked through the park. If it'd been Sunnydale, they would have definitely been related. Except it would have been some magic curse. This? Because there were so many kinds of vampires, she had to assume the same was true of werewolves. Magic wasn't completely out of the question, however.

Either way, she was packing a tranquilizer gun. The stake would go hidden in her sleeve. The sword, which was her favorite slaying weapon for The City, would have to stay at home. Beheading was for killing and Buffy had a pretty strict no-kill werewolf policy.

It didn't occur to Buffy until she was already an hour into patrol that she could have asked Willow to help her research.

Huh. She'd been Scooby Gang-less for a long time.

Patrolling wasn't terribly exciting. There was a lot of uneventful walking involved. Eventually the five-foot-two blonde started to get bored. She thought about getting a day job as a security guard but decided against the polyester uniforms. At least she wasn't so bored that she talking to herself out loud. But right now would have been an excellent time for a stray, hungry vampire to come charging her way.

"Heerree wolfy, wolfy, wolfy. I'm small, practically defenseless, and look awfully tasty..."

It probably wasn't Sam's smartest idea, jogging in the park at this hour, when tension levels were so high in the city, and people were probably just itching to pull the trigger on the first large, man-shaped creature they saw. Then again, it probably wasn't smart for anybody to be out in the park at this hour, when the nightlife would be starting to stir.

Twilight.

Yum.

Nope. Not smart at all. That was why there were people like Buffy. Keeping an eye on the things that went bump in the night so that civilians didn't have to. It wasn't her destiny to be smart, just fight things head on with supernatural smashy-ness.

From the corner of her eye she spotted the outline of something tall and dark. Something about the creature's gait didn't look especially threatening. It took her a few seconds to realize the shape was human. Jogging. Not running toward her with vampire fangs and a thirst for blood.

Her shoulders slumped slightly in disappointment. With a sigh she started to jog toward the stranger.

"Hey!"

Cover story. Buffy didn't have to be especially clever with the cover stories when dealing with natives. She lost her dog? Wait. She had a large tranquilizer gun. She was with the zoo? Sure. That would work. Never mind the lack of uniform or identification.

"Haven't you seen the news? There's a large dire wolf-thing on the loose and--"

When she was close enough to see him, Buffy cut herself off suddenly as recognition lit up her face. In her stylish, yet affordable boots, the five-three blonde looked up at him with a smile.

"Sam! I thought you were gone. Not dead-gone, just City-gone. Did something happen? It's good seeing you again. I'd hug you but--" Buffy gestured "--gun. I actually do know how to use them. You haven't casually come across a werewolf or anything? Hear strange howls or frightened screaming? The news broadcast mentioned the park but I got nada."

He slowed his pace as he approached her, attempting to long as non-threatening as he could at nearly six and a half feet tall. He was formulating his own cover story, and thinking of a polite way to tell her to stay indoors when he realized that she seemed to know him.

"Buffy?" He couldn't recall when he had seen her last, if they had met in person, or if Fred had merely mentioned her in passing--but there was no mistaking that face. At least, he hoped he hadn't just made a giant ass of himself. "I think I was City-gone for a while, or maybe just City-detoured. And don't worry--I would be surprised if you didn't know how to use a gun, even if it's not your favorite." Was he babbling a little? Maybe. "I haven't seen any werewolves lately, no."

"Well I haven't seen anything here. Maybe it's nothing. The news stories just seemed like too big of a coincidence to ignore. I have more tranquilizer guns back at my place. Wanna be my patrolling buddy tonight?"

Sam nodded. He had to agree, there was usually no such thing as coincidence. There was almost always a connection. "Sure," he said, "I've got nothing better to do." He and Dean usually only hunted together on special occasions these days. Partly because Sam had gotten used to being on his own again over the past two years, annd partly because Dean had two years of memories that might as well be of another person wearing Sam's face.

They walked. The park was pretty at night. Even she could appreciate the stars, which were not drowned out by the lights of The City proper. There were crickets. The slayer had a light bounce to her step. She was in a good mood.

"So what's up? I haven't seen you since the troll and that was over two years ago. Unless you're a new you. Not new like, inexperienced. I didn't mean it that way. I just figured after we met, there's not a lot of people in our line of work and I've seen what you can do. Without powers. Which just makes it more impressive."

Buffy heard a soft rustle and pivoted in the direction of the sound. The butt of the rifle was instantly at her shoulder, aimed and ready at a bush. A very sinister shadowy looking bush. Until someone's lost pet, complete with collar, came trotting out from behind.

The slayer lowered her weapon and smiled sheepishly. "For the record, I was not going to shoot Fido."

John had genuinely believed that he'd gotten past his PTSD. It was a convenient belief, comforting, and he had no desire to examine it more closely. He was, of course, wrong - the war may have stopped haunting his dreams, but it was still with him.

Spontaneous night-time transformation into a wolf brought his illusions crashing down. At the moment John Watson was neither rational nor calm. Since he'd changed shape in the office he'd once shared with Simon, he'd been running wild through the city.

Voices alerted him that he was no longer alone. The wolf froze among the trees and sniffed the air.

"I guess that depends what you've seen me do," Sam said with a bit of a grimace. He didn't think he was all that special without powers, but if drinking blood was what it took to get them, then he didn't want them back. "Why don't we go with the whole alternate universe theory? Cause I don't seem to remember anything about a troll. I got here just before the St. Patty's Day leprechauns."

He froze as well when he heard the noise in the underbrush, his own hand on his beretta for backup. He wasn't shooting tranqs, but if she missed or the tranquilizers didn't stop whatever was coming at her, he wasn't taking chances. He let out a chuckle when it was just a stray dog.

"No," he said, "But you were ready to shoot if it was something more dangerous. You get points for that." Little did he know there was something else lurking in the shadows.

Buffy nodded and did her best not to look disappointed. New, alternate universe Sam. Check.

"You know how to handle yourself, and despite having zero super powers you can take on monsters with the best of them. That's what I saw," she said, as if to reassure him. "So, I guess now is kind of an important time to discuss your views on werewolves. I'm strictly no-kill. Tranquilizer gun only. You gunna be okay with that?"

John understood the word 'kill.' It was all he needed to hear, really - he panicked and, rather than act rationally, he lunged out of the underbrush at the most obvious threat.

That 'threat' was Sam. If he'd had a grip on his new senses and his wits, he'd have realized that he probably ought to worry more about Buffy. Then again, if he'd a grip on his senses and wits, he wouldn't have attacked in the first place.

Werewolf in survival mode. Wonderful.

The beast snapped its jaws in a warning motion, a flash of teeth that could have broken skin - provided, of course, that they caught a limb. The two park-goers were talking about killing and John wasn't taking chances. He didn't want to be hunted down.

Sam was the one with live rounds in his pistol, so Sam would have agreed that made him threat enough. He was the bigger, the stronger. He was also the one who would have found it perfectly acceptable to kill something that was trying to eat him.

Then again, he wasn't the one who currently had a weapon drawn.

He didn't have much time to draw it either, as the wolf lunged at him and he went staggering backwards, kicking out at the thing as he tried to roll into a reverse summersault and back onto his feet. He just hoped Buffy still hat that gun ready before the wolf came at him again.

"SAM!"

Buffy went wide eyed. She was about three seconds too late to bring up her weapon and shoot the wolf before it attacked Sam. After the fact would have to do. She brought the gun up, loaded the first dart into the chamber and shot.

The wolf was hit and let out a loud squeal, jaws snapping again - wildly - as it staggered and wheeled about. The drug in the dart hit his system and began to take effect.

Meanwhile, Sam was on his feet in a defensive crouch, his gun drawn and ready, just in case. Seeing that the wolf was beginning to lose its balance, however, he lowered the weapon and took a step back, wincing at the stab of pain in his calf muscle.

He glanced down, keeping one eye on the animal as he inspected his pant leg. It was torn, and blood seeped out around the edges. "Crap."

Buffy reloaded, hearing the next dart click into the chamber and shot the struggling animal a second time. The tranquilizers she used were strong enough for the werewolves back in Sunnydale but they worked instantly. When the wolf didn't go down immediately, the slayer decided she wasn't taking any chances. No way to tell what sort of healing factor these creatures have.

Buffy looked at Sam's leg. She barely allowed herself to frown.

"Come on, help me get it back to my place."

Buffy wasn't quite able to process the consequences of Sam being bit. It was easier to keep busy and deal later. The wolf was asleep now, but they had to make sure it wouldn't hurt anyone else.
