My boss is a demon? (Lorne)
Yet another night at Caritas was winding down. Logan still hadn't quite gotten used to the elaborate make-up and prosthetics worn by about half the clientele, and by his boss. He really wasn't sure what to make of the posted rules referring to vampires with souls and trans-dimensional ejection for not tipping, except to conclude that Lorne had a strange sense of humor.

For that matter, Lorne himself was a little strange. Nice and a lot of fun to work with, but not exactly like anyone Logan had ever met.

He absentmindedly wiped down the counter with a bar rag as he waited for the last of the patrons to finish their songs and drinks and shuffle out. He did his best not to wince at the particularly bad rendition of 'I Will Survive' currently being... well, performed was too kind a word for what it was really.

Logan gave Lorne an easy grin as he approached.

"Not a bad haul tonight," he said. "Of course, I still have to do the books to make sure, but so far it's looking pretty good. But I'm thinking that we might want to go bigger with advertising. I mean, it's been awhile since there's been an ad in the paper, and we could always post fliers around the university. Plus, I think the website needs to be updated. Maybe even set up a twitter account?"

Logan had definitely had time to think over ideas lately, and he was surprised to find that there were quite a few ways they could promote the club. Because, while business was steady, he knew they could do better.

Go big or go home, after all.

"Bigger?"

Lorne smiled. "Logan, love of my life... we *have* a twitter feed." He took the smartphone out of his pocket and showed him the activity, all fueled by an account for GreenMachine.

"But newspaper, yes! Fliers, yes! I can't do the thing with the coding... html...? To save my life. Web site away, technology-saavy wonderboy."

There was a slamming noise near the door, and Lorne sighed. "Drunks are so cute."

He went over to see what was happening with his vacating patrons, and the sprinker system activated.

Logan grinned proudly at Lorne's enthusiastic response. He thumbed through the twitter feed, nodding.

"Good, this is good." He looked back up at Lorne. "I can set up a pretty basic website, or if we want a little more flash to go with our substance, I know a guy who's going to school for website design. We should be able to get him to design something for us on the cheap. I think there's room in the budget..."

He trialed off at the slamming noise. And then the sprinkler system turned on, raining down on them.

"Shit," Logan muttered as the water completely soaked through everything.

After a minute, it turned off, but Logan didn't really notice the stop of the water flow. Instead, he was staring at Lorne. There were no make-up streaks, no sign of flesh colored skin underneath... nothing.

"You're... still green," he said, his tone confused.

Lorne liked the idea of re-doing the website, and told Logan to go ahead with that, with a wave of his hand.

Being covered in water was not something Lorne wanted. "Ohhhh. This jacket... ruined. Sigh."

He gestured to his very orange, very satin smoking jacket.

You're... still green.

Lorne made a face. His lips pressed into as much of a line as they could. He was disappointed. "Yeaaaah. Because I *am* green, cheesecake."

He realized then that Logan thought the entire thing was part of the show, and things could go very wrong here. With water dripping off his chin and eyeliner running, the demon could do little but take a step forward and shrug.

"This is awkward."

Logan continued to stare, his mouth hanging open. He took a shaky step forward and then reached for a barstool.

"You... are green?" he questioned, as though that wasn't immediately obvious from the fact that Lorne was soaking wet with no sign of streaked make-up anywhere.

"And the horns...?" he questioned, though he had a feeling he knew the answer to that question too.

His legs unsteady, Logan managed to seat himself in the barstool, still not taking his eyes off of his green boss.

And the horns?

Lorne made a noise that was half-scoff, half tsk. This was the kind of thing he was used to back in LA, when people were very NOT entertainers. There were certain situations in which being green and having horns was not something you could plead down in the eyes of the other panicking party.

He didn't offer an answer about the horns outright. Logan was a bright kid. If he thought that the horns were fake at this point, there was no hope for him.

"Look, just out of curiosity," Lorne said, sliding a step stool over from next to the wall to try to turn off the sprinkler that was raining water down on him consistently, "what does it really matter? I'm green. Big deal. Does that change..." Lorne grunted, trying to get a good twist on the sprinkler. More water came out instead of less.

"... what you already know about me?"

Logan continued to gape, but finally he went behind the bar and found the toolkit he'd stashed there, retrieving a wrench.

"Here, let me," he said, setting his stool next to Lorne. He stood on it and after a few quick turns, the sprinkler system turned off.

"That's going to be a bitch to clean up," Logan said, getting down from the stool.

So, perhaps he was stalling a bit. But what did one say to a green person? For that matter, how was that even possible?

"It's just that..." Logan tried to find the right words. "I mean, I've never met a green person before. I didn't know they existed." He frowned. "More and more I'm beginning to wonder if this place isn't just some crazy drug trip."

Lorne snorted. "Y'know what's more of a bitch to clean up? When the entire place goes up like kindling. Trust me, this is fine."

He climbed down off of the step stool and surveyed the now very-wet entryway area.

"You may not be wrong. About the drug trip part. But what I can say, dumpling, is that there are planes of existence most people don't know about. And let's just cut right to the chase, so that I don't have to worry about this later: I am not a person. I am not from this dimension. I'm an empath demon. And before you wad up your boxers about the word 'demon,' believe me when I tell you I'm one of the good guys."

Logan definitely needed to sit down again. He barely made it to the stool he'd just stepped off of. He leaned against it and continued to stare at Lorne.

"Demons are real? So those other guys who come in here... that's not make-up either, is it?"

He was possibly on the urge of hyperventilating, though he managed to keep his voice relatively even.

"And the other night, Batman-freaking Batman-saved me from some muggers. And then there was that time a few months ago when I somehow got beamed up to the Starship Enterprise. And..." he touched the scar on his neck. "This bite... it wasn't a wild animal, was it?" he asked, even if it might have been somewhat ridiculous to expect Lorne to have all the answers.

"'Fraid not, puddin'."

Lorne could now feel the serious anxiety coming off of Logan in waves. He went behind the bar and started making him a drink to calm his nerves... And one for himself, too. Having a panic attack because Logan was freaking out was not something Lorne really wanted. Empathy had its serious drawbacks.

He mixed vodka and juice and ice and listened to Logan keep talking.

"I don't know about comic book superheroes, but it wouldn't surprise me." He poured the mixture into a glass and slid it over to Logan with a nod of his chin. "Or the starship enterprise. What I *do* know is that the things that do exist usually fly under the radar of normal people. Yes, Virginia, there are demons. Some are scary. Some work for evil law firms. Some, like me, can't do much more than point you in the direction you want to go, and are, when you get down to it, less scary than kittens. Most of the time."

He left out the part about feeling Logan's panic because it was so pronounced. There was no need to make the kid feel bad about his worldview going topsy-turvy.

"Batman's a pretty good guy, though, right? It seems like The City could use a caped crusader or two. Anger problem not withstanding."

"Bite?" Lorne gestured to Logan to let him see it more clearly.

Logan accepted the drink and downed half of it almost as soon as the glass was in his hand. He still wasn't quite calm, but hopefully the alcohol would begin to take effect soon.

Or maybe he just needed to drink himself under the table. Things might look a lot better in the morning. Or at the very least, he could convince himself that this hadn't really happened.

He took a few steps closer to Lorne and moved his shirt, tilting his head slightly to show off the bite. He wasn't sure he was ready to hear what had caused it, but he also couldn't just choose to hide behind ignorance. If someone was possibly offering answers, then he wasn't going to wuss out on that.

Lorne narrowed his eyes, looking at Logan's neck.

There were two punctures. They were distinct. Lorne had seen Angel's teeth--and Darla's, for that matter-- enough to know a thing or two about what made those wounds.

He nodded and took a drink of his Sea Breeze.

Considering everything Logan had just said, he was ready to catch the kid if he started wobbling when he told him what he had to tell him.

"Okay. Bad news?" The demon sighed. "A vampire did that. Good news? There's a slayer. I haven't met her, but I've heard all about her. And I'm pretty sure she's here, in the City, actually."

Logan found his way to the stool and managed to sit down, his face blank.

"A... vampire?" he shook his head with disbelief.

"A vampire...." he repeated slowly.

Finally, something else registered and he looked up at Lorne, alarmed.

"A slayer? That sounds... ominous." he frowned. "I think I need to sit down," he said weakly.

Lorne started making Logan another drink. He looked like he needed it. And if really necessary, Lorne had the girlfriend's phone number written down under the bar. Emergency contact. If he made Logan tipsy, he'd be sure he got him home safe, too.

He nodded every time the kid said 'vampire.'

"Well, no. The slayer is a good guy. Girl." He slid the drink to Logan and leaned forward on the bar, explaining.

"See, back where I'm from, which more and more I'm thinking is not your world, most people don't know about vampires, or demons, or other dimensions. But some do. There's one girl in every generation that gets super powers so she can fight off the bad." Lorne smiled. "The current slayer--one of them, which is a whole other bag o' donuts to explain-- is Buffy. She's a California girl, she's saved the world more than a few times, and she used to date my former boss."

He nodded. "I've heard some of the patrons mention that she's around. Demons and vampires tend to keep tabs on slayers, for obvious reasons."

It didn't seem to him that Logan remembered being bitten, so he didn't say anything about biting being permitted as long as the bitee was okay with it. "If the vamp that bit you needs puttin' down, there are people in this place that can handle that. I do need to mention though that like demons, not all vampires are bad. Not all of them behave like hungry dogs."

Alcohol was a very, very good thing to have right now, Logan thought absently.

He almost choked on the healthy drink he'd just taken when Lorne explained more about the slayer. He looked over at the green demon.

"The big bad slayer... her name is... Buffy? You're kidding... right?"

No, of course he wasn't kidding. Logan took another healthy drink, hoping very much that the alcohol would somehow make this conversation seem saner. Then again, he reflected, there probably wasn't enough alcohol in this crazy City to make this conversation sane.

Lorne smiled.

"Nope. Buffy. Pretty blonde girl. Angel had a picture of her on his desk."

He looked at Logan, carefully. The sounds of people outside had all long since faded. Caritas was silent, and so were its surroundings.

"You doing okay with this?"

Logan frowned, still trying to process everything that had been revealed to him recently.

"I... think I need to sit down," he repeated, before realizing that he was already sitting.

"Or tequila. Lots of tequila. That might help," he said. "So, to recap, there are demons and vampires, but not all of them are bad? And a pretty girl named Buffy is responsible for slaying them?"

Nope. Didn't sound any less ridiculous when he summed it up like that.

Lorne got a glass of water, first, and set it in front of Logan. No one wanted a hangover, even though the kid was likely going to get one. He double checked the number under the bar. Veronica, that was her name. Okay. Then he got the Patron from the shelf behind him.

"That's the general gist, yeah. It's a little more complicated than that but you, uh, you look a little frazzled by just that. So let's wait on that stuff. It's all similar, anyway."

He took another drink of his own Sea Breeze.

"D'ya have anything you need to ask? Do I need to start puttin' the Buffy Signal out at night? I'm guessing you don't remember much about the..." Lorne gestured to Logan's neck.

Logan accepted the water and took a healthy drink of that as well.

"I-I think that I've probably asked enough questions for tonight," Logan mumbled.

He reached out a hand for the bottle, not really wanting to bother with the formality of a shot glass at the moment. Lorne already knew he could take any alcohol that Logan drank out of his paycheck. And he definitely planned to make a very large dent in the bottle.

"The only thing I remember about that night was going to the bar. I don't remember how I got home. Just that the next thing I knew, I was waking up covered in my own blood, with what looked like some sort of wild animal bite on my neck."

He tried not to retch at the memory.

Lorne was going to have to keep the water coming, he could see. And maybe grab him one of the plates of fries in the back.

"The bar?" Lorne was interested, now. For a few reasons. Competition, for one. Was this that vampire place he'd seen advertisements for? He sort of hoped not. Biting the patrons was not a good business strategy.

Logan waved his hand dismissively.

"Just some dive bar right off campus. At least, it was off campus when I went to it. I'm pretty sure it had moved by the time I tried to go home."

He took another swig from the bottle.

"Have I mentioned how much I hate this City sometimes?"

The demon disappeared and came back with a plate full of fries and onion rings, which he set down in front of Logan.

"Get something in your stomach if you wanna keep drinking, okay? I don't mind if you want to have tee many martoonis, but your insides will thank you later if you nosh a little."

Dive bar? There were a lot of those in this place. Lorne frowned. He'd have to put feelers out about this one.

"Do me a favor, will ya. Hum something."

By now, Logan was almost used to Lorne's strange musical requests. He'd certainly seen the demon ask enough people to sing or hum.

All the same, the request caught him off guard. He took a moment, trying to think of something to hum.

Finally, he hummed a few bars of the first song that popped into his head-the Indiana Jones theme song. It was slightly off-beat in his now happily tipsy state, but he was sure it would do the trick for Lorne all the same.

He found that he was starting to be a bit more okay with the whole idea of demons being real. The tequila was certainly helping with that.

Lorne grinned. He had it on good authority from a guy who came in all the time that Dr. Henry Jones Jr. used to teach at the college, but no one had seen him in a while.

"You don't hate the City," he said, raising both eyebrows. "You hate what it's doing. The City gave you a better shake than where you were, that's for sure."

He didn't see anything in what Logan had hummed to let him know that being back at this bar was in the kid's future. He saw a whole lot of Veronica, though.

Logan frowned at Lorne's assertion that the City had given him a better 'shake' than Neptune, but then he realized that at least here, his dad and Lily's death, and his Mom's death, weren't famous. And he'd gotten a second-or make that fourth (was that right?) chance with Veronica.

"Maybe it's not all bad," he agreed, a small goofy smile spreading across his face. "I mean, besides the evil things wanting to attack and starting out broke. there is Veronica. I love her."

His words were slurred and the tequila had definitely started to kick in. Logan rested his head on his hand.

"You don't say. I couldn't tell," the demon teased.

Lorne hadn't heard Veronica sing, so he couldn't say for sure if she was as over the mooon for Logan as he was for her. He hoped so, for the kid's sake. Everyone deserved a little bit of happy.

He'd have to call her soon. Logan looked about ready to fall off his barstool.

Logan smiled contentedly.

"Yeah, well you don't have a love that survives ruined lives, bloodshed, and all that without it being epic," he said.

His smile faded and he frowned then.

"Though I didn't think epic would have to cover ending up in some strange afterlife or bizarre alternate dimension together. I wonder if Veronica knows about the vampires and demons."

Lorne shrugged. "If she's as smart a cookie as you say she is, I bet she's figurin' it out."

Lorne ate one of the fries he'd set in front of Logan.

He took out his City-provided phone and sent Veronica a text message: Hi there sugar. :) Logan's a bit in the bag, do you think you can pick him up, or do I need to call him a taxi?

"Oh she is," Logan assured Lorne. "You wouldn't believe how many times she's been almost killed just for digging up things that people would rather stay hidden."

He frowned then. That urge to protect Veronica was always there, and had always caused a wedge with them. He never truly expected her to stop investigating things, but he would have preferred if it was something a little less volatile than murder. But Veronica was Veronica, after all.

"Most people wouldn't. It takes work to be this amazing. Now, your lady friend is coming to pick you up, so I need to ask-- you don't feel like you're going to lose your tequilas in her car or anything, do you?"

His phone buzzed. Veronica was outside with the car.

"I did go to Neptune High. Drinking is kind of an unofficial sport there. So, no losing my tequilas. Scout's honor."

He set the glass down and got to his feet, then looked at Lorne.

"Let's go."

He wasn't quite sure how Veronica was going to react to Lorne, or if she'd believe him when he told her that the green wasn't make-up. But he needed at least someone to talk to about all of this. Make that, someone who didn't take it for granted that demons and vampires were real.

Veronica was waiting outside. The car in question wasn't hers, but a taxi she'd called. It idled in the alley next to Caritas.

She was mildly annoyed that she'd had to come out here, but only mildly. Logan's boss seemed like a good guy, after all. If the boys needed a little drinkin' time to blow off steam, she could get behind that. This place wasn't exactly stress-free.

When she saw Logan come out the door, he was clearly drunk and walking next to/falling down next to the guy she guessed must be Lorne.

Lorne was green. Lorne was green and had horns.

Hokay.

He gestured vaguely in Lorne's direction.

"Veronica, this is Lorne. Lorne, Veronica."

He knew there was no way Veronica would miss the green skin. At least maybe she'd believe him when he told her it wasn't make-up.
