Mistaken Identity (Fight Club Challenge-Barbara)
Dinah crouched on the edge of a four story building, surveying the alley below. She was waiting for her target for questioning for the night to appear. She stifled a yawn and did her best to keep herself awake. It was difficult to make sleep a priority and it was especially difficult to get any sleep at the Clocktower, which was so empty without Jake.

At least when she'd been able to go to Harry's, she'd gotten a little bit more sleep. But that was out of the question until Murphy found her place.

So, Dinah was more than a little on edge. She was probably more trigger happy than she should be at the moment.

Barbara followed her old friend to the ledge, making her own quick calculations of how fast and long the run-up would have to be to safely see her across. It had been a while since Babs and Dinah had gone out on patrol together, but the familiarity of it was comforting in this brand new place.

She paused and thew Dinah a confused look. "Of course. I wrote to you, remember? That's how we met!" She took a few steps away from the ledge as her mind flew through various scenarios. "So you're saying that there are people here from... entirely different timelines?" It was one thing to be from different times, but they were talking parallel universes here. At this rate, there could very well be a universe in which Babs never became Batgirl, or was accepted into the police. "Wow, that's a lot to wrap your head around."

Dinah stopped herself, a small smile spreading across her face.

"I'd almost forgotten about that," she said with a soft chuckle.

At Barbara's question about the timelines, she considered how much to reveal. It was probably better to get back to the Clocktower, maybe pour them each a glass of wine... assuming this Barbara was old enough to drink. There was a strange though indeed.

"Different timelines, different..." Dinah shook her head slightly. "I think it's best if we get inside and I'll explain the rest. It's sort of a lot to take in."

Luckily, the Clocktower loomed just ahead. Dinah wished for just a minute that she had a zipline or grappling hook of some sort, but instead prepared herself to climb down the fire escape.

Barbara nodded. Sitting down sounded like a good idea. She was on the verge of going off on one of her intense lines of inquiry, and it would be better for both of them if they weren't out on a roof when it happened.

Her eyes widened at the sight of the Clocktower. That building was supposed to be her home in the future. Babs noticed Dinah head towards the fire escape. "We don't have to go that way, Canary," she called out to her friend, automatically slipping into the habit of using their masked names while on patrol. "I have a grappling gun."

Dinah looked up at Barbara and laughed, taking a step toward her friend.

"Of course... Batgirl," she said. "One of these days, I'm going to have to invest in one of those."

She grabbed onto Barbara and waited for the younger woman to grapple them off the building. Or whatever the proper verb for that was.

Barbara opened her mouth to respond that they could just go talk to Bruce, before slamming it shut again. Bruce was back in Gotham, last time she checked. She was going to have to start designing her weapons herself. "We'll be sure to do something about that," she replied with a weak smile, her voice cracking ever-so-slightly cracking with emotion.

"Hold on tight!" Barbara said, before hopping onto the ledge of the roof and jumping off. This had always been one of her favorite parts. There was nothing like swinging between buildings, wind in your hair, cape splayed out to make you feel alive.

Dinah grinned and held on. It was definitely a rush, and she remembered why she had coveted the bat-grappling hooks from time to time.

They touched down in front of the Clocktower and Dinah led her friend over to it.

"Might as well try your key first," she said.

Barbara nodded and pulled out the key, wondering if the City could really pull off something like this. The key had somehow made its way into her possession; this would just be a logical conclusion. As expected, the key slid right into the hole, the tumblers rearranging themselves with a satisfying 'click' as she turned it.

Looking over to her friend, Babs smiled sheepishly. "I guess this is home, then."

Dinah beamed.

"Welcome home, Barbara."

She led her old friend (or in this case, not-so-old) upstairs, thinking that at least something good had happened lately. Not that she would have chosen for Barbara to be stuck here, but it was good to have some version of her best friend here, good to not have to deal with the emptiness of the Clocktower apartment for a little bit.

After giving Barbara the tour, Dinah gestured to the couch.

"You might want to sit down for this."

She considered offering wine, but finally decided against it. If she was right in her estimations, this Barbara was either not old enough to drink or barely old enough and Dinah was not going to risk the chance that she might be offering alcohol to a minor.

"So, you probably already know the gist of things-about the moving streets, different timelines, all that." Dinah lead off. "Not sure how many people you've encountered, but from what I gather, there are people from a lot of parallel Earths here. There's an Oliver from a world where the Justice League doesn't fully exist yet-there's a team of them and they're definitely doing good, but they don't have name. Don't have... well, in that world, Clark Kent isn't exactly Superman."

She stopped and took a breath, hoping that Barbara wouldn't ask too many questions about Oliver. If Dinah was right about the timelines, this Barbara came from sometime around when she and Oliver had been at their happiest. She wasn't ready to go into an explanation about her lovelife and all the ways things had soured since then.

"Worse than that, there are people from worlds where..." Dinah stopped, taking a deep breath. She rubbed at her temples. This part was more difficult to explain. "Where costumed superheroes don't really exist, and our stories are comic books. I'm not sure of the science behind it, but I looked at a few of them and they got a lot of details right. I think that it's possible some of the creative teams behind them might have inadvertently tapped into our world."

Dinah grimaced.

"The bad news is that, to some, our secret identities are common knowledge. You might run into people who just know Barbara Gordon is Batgirl."

She stopped then. There was a lot more to explain in regards to all of the supernatural threats she'd come across, more to explain when it came to the Joker and the likelihood that he would be just as obsessed with toying with this version of Barbara-with any version of Barbara. She would have to explain Jake, and show Barbara the computer room. Eventually.

She'd already dumped a lot on Barbara for the night and perhaps the rest could wait for another time.
