Takin care of business (Aeon)
It left Dr Schreber, still wearing the body that it had created. Walking to where it wanted to go was an unusual thing, and The City reveled a little in the simplicity of it. Just walking. Just being one of the people wandering the streets. Pretending.

Of course, it wasn't about to just wander until it found who it was looking for. It shifted the streets to suit itself until he was face to face with the black haired woman who he sought. Making it's trip very short indeed.

"Miss Flux." It called out in a bland, ordinary tone. Knowing that it would get her attention no matter what. She had too much ability to leave a stranger who knew her name ignored.

The City stood, it's hands in it's suit pockets, looking as casual as it could manage considering it had never done such a thing before.

The leprechaun thought she was a zombie. That kinda tickled. Aeon walked away from that with a half a grin on her face, went home, and didn't give the leprechaun or the strange circumstances surrounding her last death any further thought.

The next night, for the first time in as long as she could remember, someone was able to stop her dead in her tracks. Dead in her tracks. Nice phrase.

Miss Flux?

Aeon's eyebrow rose and she turned to face the body that went with the voice, drawing her gun as she moved. Her left hand was brought up to chest level, gun aimed perfectly, finger already squeezing the trigger back.

"Don't move," she said, voice perfectly calm. Something was not right here. Not at all right.

Aeon moved forward, gun still ready to go. "Tell my why you know my name and why you're using it like we're friends. Maybe I won't blow your head off."

The City only smiled, nonplussed by the gun. If she killed this body it wouldn't matter, it could make another. And it would make her life hell for a little while for putting it out temporarily.

"You and I have a mutual acquaintance, who would prefer to remain unnamed for now." It didn't adjust it's position at all. Didn't even take it's hands out of it's pockets to hold them up in the customary 'I'm unarmed' way.

"Familiarity seemed the best choice in this situation. I had hoped to not call attention to us in public. I think your gun will do the job for me." It's eyes slid away from her briefly to indicate those around them.

Aeon's life already was hell.

Unnamed mutual acquaintance. Those words could not possibly end well. Aeon half hoped that the button in her back would start going off and Handler would warn her.

But nothing happened.

Aeon's eyes did not follow the man's to the people nearby, who were giving them a wide enough berth, thanks to the gun.

"Your funeral," Aeon said. She lowered the gun and slid it back into its holster, fingers moving to the ring on her hand and spinning it. The ring could kill him just as dead as the gun.

Aeon fought the urge to shake her head, to slide that lense into place and look this guy over once more.

"What do you want from me? I'm not known for my patience. Talk."

"I need to hire you to ... remove somebody." It took three slow steps closer. "You are the best, and I need this done by the best. It cannot be messed up."

The City stopped and tilted it's head again. "I can pay you any fee you require. The sooner you do this, the better."

Slowly it took a photograph out of it's pocket and held it out.

"The man is a menace."

Aeon furrowed her eyebrows. The best, huh?

"Flattery might work," she said. "If I still did this kind of thing."

She took in the man's words without another gesture or another sound. And when he handed her the photo, she took it, very confused. This man didn't look like he could hurt anyone. The eyes. It was all wrong.

"Define menace," Aeon said.

"All you need to know is that he interferes with my business and life. If you don't want the job, then say no. If you do, name your price, you'll be paid up front, and we'll be done with each other."

The City lifted it's eyebrow at her, waiting.

Aeon thought about what happened last time. The last time she'd taken a job, River Tam had been the mark. She'd looked innocent, too.

And she'd killed Aeon. With pleasure.

Her eyes focused on the man in the picture, considering.

Tell me what your job is, Aeon.
Fuck you.
Tell me.
...I'm a Monican.

She might regret this, but she said a very large number.

"If he kills me, I will hunt you down and kill you," Aeon said, very matter-of-factly. A beat. "Who is our mutual accquaintance?"

From out of it's pocket, it took a rather thick envelope and held it out to her. She would find, when she counted it, that it was exactly the amount she specified. No more, no less. There was an advantage to being the one who manipulated reality.

"You'll have no issues." It managed a small smile. "And our mutual acquaintance will inform you of who they are if they choose. It's not my place to reveal such things."

It nodded at the photo and the money. "I cannot wait to see your handiwork."

The City tipped it's hat at her and turned away. What it needed to do was done, and it had no further desire to speak to Aeon Flux.
