River eyed the piece of paper cautiously.

The instructions were too complex, she thought. This would be an easy thing to do.

Eyebrow arched, standing in the women's lounge outside the bathroom, bent over a counter, River made the last fold. The thing was complete.

It was an origami version of Serenity. River smiled at it.

The instructions urged her to think of what she truly wanted. Looking at the ship, thinking of how things had been with her brother, River wished.

Silently, in Mandarin.

She smiled.

_______________

Later that day, April Fool's Day, River went to the hospital, hoping to grab Hannibal for lunch. She was cheerful, and she couldn't really explain why. She just felt... better. She grinned as she opened the doorway to the hallway that held Hannibal's office, hitting it with both arms out so it swung.

Simon didn't feel anything. Not exactly. He still had to settle things with Jennifer over Jake, and he still had to figure out how to get Hannibal out of the Hospital. The man was good at what he did, but he was also a danger. Why the Hospital still kept them both on was beyond him, but he couldn't let the monster stick around unwatched, unguarded.

The fact that he was walking down the same hallway as River though was pure luck. He was working through an order of gloves; he didn't understand why there were boxes of blue gloves in his office, much less why he also had a purchase order for other gloves.

"It makes no sense. None at all." He was ticking off the list. "I'll just have to use them, make the staff use them. Ridiculous."

The door swung into the doctor, and River clapped her hand over her mouth.

"Sorry!"

The man was focused on other things, with a pen and a paper, and wasn't looking where he was going. "I didn't mean to do that. Are you alright?"

There was something about gloves. Gloves. Too many gloves. She almost giggled.

Simon looked up from the paperwork on the floor, his mind coming back to whatever glove infested world it'd been in.

"What? Yes, thank you." The doctor bent down to start picking up all the papers. "I wasn't looking where I was going. It's not a problem."

He looked at the young woman again; he'd seen her somewhere before, but he couldn't place her. He just went back to putting together the papers.

"Though, next time, look before you just swing it open." He gave her a tight smile.

River bent down, too, and helped pick up the papers she'd been responsible for knocking all over.

She smiled back, although what he said struck her as a bit condescending. Critical of her.

Once she had an armful, River stood up again and extended a hand full of papers to the doctor. The papers said things about latex gloves in bulk.

"So many gloves..."

"Are you a doctor here?"

Simon smiled tightly again as she handed over the papers. It was nice of her to help, but he wished he didn't have to do everything over now.

"I thought I was. Though lately I seem to be more administration than actual doctor. Which would be fine if I wanted to sit behind a desk, but I got into this to be a doctor. To do things." Simon rearranged the papers a little before looking at her. He had never seen her before, had he?

"Are you lost? Here seeing a patient? Something I can help you with?" He could be helpful when he wanted to be, which was more often than most people gave him credit for. He just had a bad habit of opening mouth and inserting foot.

River shook her head. "I'm visiting."

Interesting of him to share his frustrations. He didn't even know her. River supposed stressful jobs made that happen, though. Made people more apt to talk about what was bothering them to people. "Do things?"

The papers were back in his hands, but River stayed slightly focused on gloves. She was distracted, slightly uneasy. There was a quick flash in her head of those hands, two pairs, blue...

She should find Hannibal.

"Was just dropping in on Dr. Lecter," she said. Her eyes slid to the papers again, then back to the doctor's face. "For lunch."

"Yes, save lives, fix people, cure with my own two hands, not deal with inventories or paperwork. This," Simon held up the papers. "This is for an administrator, a business manager. I am a doctor, dammit, not an accountant."

His brow lifted at Hannibal's name. So, this was one of Hannibal's friends. Possibly the rumored girlfriend. He looked her over and felt an extreme pity. Either this girl was crazy or stupid. She could be completely ignorant; she didn't seem to know what she was doing.

"I see." He pulled the papers closer. He couldn't tell her not to; it wasn't like he knew her, or had any say in her life. She seemed old enough, just not completely aware.

River giggled.

And then the shift... the shift in the doctor was noticeable. River tried not to pry with her brain. She'd tried ever since escaping from the Academy. She knew what she was capable of, and she also knew from experience that her mind reading ability got her into trouble.

She tilted her head. "Is something the matter?"

"No." Of course, something was the matter, but Simon couldn't bring himself to say as much. She was a grown woman, more or less, and she could make her own decisions, even if they were bad ones. He looked at her, critically; she might have some skill, but she seemed so frail.

"No, I should be going. Have a nice lunch." The doctor didn't move immediately. He stood there just a little longer; he wanted to say something, only....Where was her family? Where were the people who should be looking after her? It was a sad state of affairs when a nice young woman would go have lunch with a man like Dr. Lecter. A very sad state of affairs.

River blinked at him. Something, even if she wasn't using any of her abilities, was clearly on his mind.

"...we will..." she said, absently.

There was something that felt weird, here. Something she thought she should know but couldn't place.

"Was that... really all?"

Simon looked at her and gave her a slight smile.

"Yes. That's all. I have work to do. Enjoy your day, miss." And with that, the good doctor walked off to work on deciphering the invoices and boxes.

"Why so many gloves?" He could be heard to mutter as he walked away. "No one needs this many gloves? They're not even all the same size." He would have to talk to someone about all this.
