Growing up. (OPEN)
Graduation. It was supposed to be a special day, spent with friends and family. It was supposed to be a celebration of achievements, a transition into another stage of life. It was supposed to be an adventure.
A year ago, graduation had been an adventure that Raven had really wanted to embark upon. No danger, no loss. She could have gotten on-board with the idea of going to college, or taking a trip with Mac and Mal. A little normalcy, a break after several long years of fighting and fear.
Then she'd come to the City.
She was adapting, and that was what bothered her. She'd long since ceased trying to cover her physical quirks, the pointed ears that marked her as something not-quite-human. The bizarre had become commonplace; after zombies and cupids and snow and shamrocks, what was one more weird-looking kid? She'd graduated from high school, yes, but there would be no cross-country adventure. There wasn't even any escape.
After several different jobs, Raven eventually settled into a salesclerk's position in a small independent bookstore. Not her dream job by far, but she was learning to settle, to ignore the dull ache of missing her home and her friends. Besides, there were perks. The store was perpetually empty, which left her with plenty of time to read or rearrange the displays. Today was a stock-changeover day; Raven stood in the window, taking down the signs that advertised a sale on mystery novels. The manager wanted to punch up the Irish literature for St. Patrick's Day, though in Raven's private opinion the City didn't need any more St. Patrick's enthusiasm. Her entire wardrobe had spontaneously changed color, and the green really clashed with her red eyes.
