They met over Rump Roast [Cupid Challeng - Sweeney]
The grocery store was a place of wonder; the food was right there and fresh. It begged to be touched, caressed, taken, which was exactly what Zoe was doing. She'd decided that since she found her husband and since the power was working, that she'd have to make dinner. Actually, seeing as no one was around to do it, she was making something more appetizing than those damn protein bars that Wash had returned to eating since he boarded Serenity again.

Actually, the Amazon was happy to be cooking with real food; it was a rarity that wouldn't grow old too soon. They had to scrimp and save for real berries, berries that Kaylee loved, and now they could simply go get them at a store, a grocery store. The Amazon was feeling motherly, so she put a few containers of the berries into the basket. She'd already stacked different vegetables and fruits into the buggy, some she knew, some she didn't - it didn't matter, they were going to try them all.

Moving from produce to meat, Zoe smiled. They would have real meat on board, meat that didn't moo or create a mess. It was already dead and butchered for cooking. All they had to do was cook it. She started looking over the different cuts; stew seemed the easiest and quickest, and it could take a good many of the vegetables. Stew meat, she even liked that the packages were marked. Who knew that she could be so very domestic? Sometimes she wondered if the City hadn't changed her, hadn't made her into a new person.

Little did she know that she was about to become an even newer, and possibly not so improved, Zoe Washburne.

It probably painted quite the picture, the nearly seven foot tall redhead standing in his usual jeans, tshirt and jean jacket, with a small green shopping basket on the crook of his arm. Inside were normal things one would find there: a can of french cut green beans, a few potatoes, and a few apples. It wasn't what he carried that was peculiar, just that he was there.

He was the type who generally ate at food stands and small low scale cafes rather than cook himself, but Sweeney was adept at rather simple sorts or cooking - such as boiling meat and potatoes the old Irish way.

Looking over the selection in the meat department, Sweeney shifted from poultry to beef, hoping to find some nice stew cuts to boil. It was then that he came upon the most striking women he'd ever seen. He said nothing at first, but leaned over to see if he could find the cuts hew as looking for, smiling all the while.

Zoe's head lifted there was that feeling of being watched, as if someone was aiming at her. It was a feeling one developed on the front, and she thought maybe being in the City she'd lost it; then again, when she turned her head enough to look in a mirrored surface all she saw was some big red haired male smiling at her. The Amazon smiled ever so slightly back, not wanting to give the man the wrong impression, only as she was looking at him...

Zoe felt a quick sharp pain in her shoulder. She took a deep breath; her chest felt tight. Something was wrong. Something wasn't right at all. Her fingers tightened on the buggy's push bar, knuckles going white. Her head went light, and she felt like her knees were about to go. What the hell had just happened?

Her mind raced through all the injuries she'd incurred over her lifetime; sure, she'd been sliced not so nicely back when they were fighting to get the word out there about Miranda. But, that had been on the other side of her back. The pain was too focused, and it was gone. Whatever was wrong, she had an urge to deck the smiling man. He did this to her! Didn't he? He was the cause of this...

Chinese curses flowed as she tried to get her bearings; she didn't like making scenes, not unless they were serving as distractions. She didn't like losing her control, not in such a public place and surrounded by strangers. Only...

"I need to sit down." Her voice low and husky. Whether he helped her or not, her body was going down.

"Uh, ok." Sweeney wasn't sure what to do. It wasn't like he was known for his chivalrous behavior or anything. In fact, he was usually known for quite the opposite. But there was this overwhelming sensation of needing to help this woman that he dropped his basket and immediately went to her aid.

His large hands took ahold of the woman boldly under her arms to be able to support her weight as she descended to the floor. "Are you alright, should I call a doctor?" Not that Sweeney had the first clue where a Doctor could be found in the City - he not having done much other than drink, sleep and be merry since his first day in the City.

Then a sharp pain found itself lodged in his shoulder and he couldn't decide if it was from an outside source or if it was from the stress of lowering the woman to the floor. She was a relatively tall woman herself, and a good stone or two heavier than he had expected when he'd tried to help her to the floor.

So no matter the overall warmth that was taking over his body, Sweeney couldn't help but be annoyed. It was likely the woman's fault.

Zoe would have fought off the hands, but something inside was wrong enough to distract her. She didn't even think to draw a weapon as he came closer. Down she went and settled on the floor; this was dignified - some red haired idiot holding her up against the meat bin. Her eyes lifted to look into his, which was not a good idea at all.

Chinese filled the small space between them as she looked at his face; it was a new face, a good face, a concerned face. It was...not Wash's face.

"Who are you?" The tone was a mix of wonder and annoyance. What had this man done to her to make her feel so...so...high? Had he drugged her? No, she'd seen his hands the whole time, hadn't she? She'd felt this strange sensation before he came close.

There were a few people who hadn't gotten hit apparently, and some who had, that were now taking an interest in the rather tall and slightly impressive pair. Zoe looked from him to the small crowd then back to the strange man, confusion obvious. She was torn between hitting him and kissing him, and that combination had until just now been reserved for just one man. Who hadn't been around much, who was too busy trying to save that damn ship, who didn't want to settle one day, who never could understand her....

She closed her eyes in an attempt to calm herself. One hand lifted to the stranger's, just a quick remove and hold. The other reached out and claimed a bit of the stranger's shirt. When her eyes opened again, if he hadn't fought her off, their noses would be practically touching as a result of the small yank. Now with the closeness, she just had to remember what exactly she had been planning to do.

What the hell was this woman playing at? Was she trying to kiss him? Sweeney didn't know what to make of this at all, but he knew he wouldn't probably have minded all that much if she had. It had been a long time since Sweeney could last recall having been kissed. At the same time, he was still annoyed with her, not only because of the pain in his shoulder, or because she had yanked on his shirt, but because she had so rudely demanded who he was.

"Name's Sweeney," he said, nose to nose with the strange woman. "And kindly let go of my shirt." It was dreadfully uncomfortable to be pulled in so close to someone he didn't know.

"Who're you?" It was a valid question. Strange woman is over come in some way, requiring the immediate aid of a stranger, then she demands who he was and behaves as if she wanted to plant a wet one of him. Bizarre. Granted, strange things happened to him in the City - being turned into a dog topped that list so far, stupid Djinn; but that didn't ean that this was any less off putting.

Part of him wanted to shove her away. At the same time part of him wanted to bring her closer, to press his lips firmly against hers. A desire that was weighing over his desire to move away. So much so that Sweeney closed his eyes and moved in closer.

"I'll let go when you tell me what's going on. This is less than...kosher." The Amazon had heard the word used recently, and she'd liked the way it sounded. Her fingers had eased up in their hold, but they didn't let go, not yet. "Zoe Washburne." She thought of giving rank and serial, but left it with just her name.

Her head tilted a little, lips parting slightly, but she didn't kiss him. Instead, Zoe soon had a knife at the man's precious bits, her eyes narrowing dangerously. What was it lately that had her going for a man's small parts? She didn't follow that particular line of thought any further than giving the red Sweeney giant a glare.

"Now, what did I get hit with that makes you look like the last bit of meat 'fore rations bring the protein?" Zoe was human; she knew she could be tempted, but this guy was a complete stranger - there hadn't been any witty banter, no drinking, and certainly no flirtatious glances. There hadn't even been gun fire. This didn't make any sense, and he was going to have to work on finding some.

Again, he thought she was going to kiss her, he had opened his eyes long enough to see the incline of her head and the parting of her lips. This was going to be strange, it was going to bed unique, it was going to be unexpected -mostly, and it was going to...

Not happen.

Suddenly there was a blade at his precious bits and Sweeney's stomach tightened. Wait. Wasn't she the one making the strange moves? Wasn't she the one nearly fainting, pulling him close? Wasn't she... oh fuck it, what did it matter what she was when she had a knife aimed at his precious bits.

"Hit with?" Sweeney didn't know what she was talking about. He didn't think he'd been hit with anything, let alone her. He never saw anything hit her, that was for sure. Not that he'd been paying that close attention or anything. "Fuck if I know. I was just looking for some stew meat when you said you were going down."

"You smiled. I saw you smile." Zoe was grasping at straws, and she didn't like it. The rush that had been there was gone; she was becoming very angry, and this man was the only person who seemed to have anything to do with it. She'd felt the rush, the need to kiss him, and it'd made her sick, weak.

"You came in right on time, didn't you?" The knife turned, and it wasn't aimed at what made him a so-called man; no, it was pointed at an artery. One quick punch and he'd be bleeding better than a stuck pig. She knew how to fight, and whatever he'd done had certainly caused her to go down. This wasn't right. A few choice Chinese curses fell from her lips.

"Just back up." She'd let go of any part of him she'd been holding. "Just back up and walk away."

Sweeney backed away the second she released him. "Listen, I don't know what planet you come from. But it ain't no crime to smile at someone here." And it wasn't. At least not as far as Mad Sweeney was concerned. It was perfectly alright to smile at someone, especially a stranger. That was how one made friends.

Unless everything had changed and he wasn't made aware of it.

He wanted to walk away, or at least part of him wanted to. The other and slightly less logical portion of Sweeney wanted to tell this woman what for. He stopped in his retreat, raised on hand, index finger extended and shook it at Zoe.

"And let me tell you another thing. It's bad form to go around asking for help from strangers then threatening them when they do help you."
