Odd reunion (Deb)
It had been a long time since he'd seen or talked to Deb, which he thought was sort of odd. Why he hadn't thought about it before now was also kind of odd, he supposed. He'd just gotten so used to her not being around, that her being here had been the strange thing. It had been just the opposite at first, he remembered.

The reminder came when he had gone downstairs to drop a file off for one of the other cops. He'd seen his sister's name on the door along with another one. Anita Blake. They were partners now.

Dex hung around waiting for her to show up. Just to say hi. He thought maybe he'd offer to take her to lunch, see how things had been for her. Surprise her. She'd like that. Maybe she hadn't called because she'd gotten so settled in. Found somebody to occupy her time.

Well, he'd find out wouldn't he?

Dexter checked his watch and then looked up, smiling when he saw the familiar form of his sister walking toward him.

"Dex." Deb paused the moment she saw her brother. It had been awhile and she didn't think she would see him here. No one had mentioned that he was here, anyway, so imagine her surprise when she saw him standing there, just like always before this whole City mess.

She didn't know if she wanted to hug him or punch him really hard in the arm. On the one hand, he was her brother and he'd saved her life, but on the other...he was a killer. Harry would have turned him in. That was what Deb figured anyway. But he had saved her life, and this City was all kinds of messed up. Maybe Deb could let it slide.

She walked over to him and hugged him tightly and then took a step back and punched him in the arm, hard. "It's good to see you!"

He hugged her back, a little bit confused about what was going on. "It's only been like a month, Deb. You're acting like it's been years."

Dexter motioned to the door to his side. "I see you got a partner. What's she like? You guys getting along. I guess you've been pretty busy, huh?"

There was something different about Deb, but he couldn't quite put his finger on it. What was it? Her hair looked the same as the last time he'd seen her.

"A month?" Deb questioned, taking a step back from him so she could decipher if he was messing with her or not. He seemed serious about it though. "What the fuck are you talking about Dex?" She really had no idea.

"Anita is fine." Deb said. "A lot like me, if you can fucking believe that." She laughed a bit, for a moment forgetting the fact that she didn't know what Dex was talking about. What did he mean he'd seen her a month ago?

"But Dex I haven't seen you since before I came here."

Dexter paused. He looked at Deb. So that's what was off, then. This was his sister, but not the same one. It was odd. He'd heard of it happening to other people. That they'd had somebody here that they knew, and then that person left and came back, but it wasn't the same person. This was the first time he'd ever experienced it, though.

He wasn't sure that he liked it.

"Oh." He swallowed hard, trying to deal.

"Shit."

Did he explain this to her? Would she want to hear it? Would she even believe him, was a bigger point. Had she been in this place long enough to understand, really, that strange things happened to the people all the time? Things like this were actually quite normal?

Another thing, what version of Deb was this then? What did she know about him that the other one hadn't? Or did she know anything different? Was she the same Deb, just not the same Deb?

"You're not going to like hearing this, I don't think."

"Oh?" Deb asked him. That was all he had to fucking say? Deb might have gone off on him but she didn't. This place was weird, maybe there was another one of her here or something. She neded would have considered that before but now working with Anita, she considered a lot more.

"Try me Dex." She told him. "After all my partner and I are supposed to deal with the freaky cases all the time."

He shrugged and then nodded a little bit, taking a deep breath. Dexter took an extra second to try to figure out if there was a way to sugar coat the whole thing, then decided there wasn't.

"You were here. Before. You came here and then I guess you left. But you're back now. But I don't know if you're the same you that was here before. See, this place... it brings people in. Sometimes it sends them away again. Then after that, occasionally it brings them back, but they're not always the same. It doesn't mean there's anything wrong with you."

Man, this was a lot harder to explain than he'd thought it was going to be.

"What... do you know? About.. stuff?" That would make it easier. He could know which her she was.

She'd been here before. Alright then. So far, so good. She could accept that. She was working with Anita now and she knew the craziness of it all, so she could deal with what he was saying, much better than Deb would have been able to before coming here. She didn't remember anything about being here before, that was for sure.

"Of course there is nothing wrong with me, Dex." She pointed out. "I'm just...me."

He wanted to know what she knew, and she knew well what he was talking about. "I really...don't think this is the place for that talk." She told him seriously.

Ah. Yes. So she knew. Which was... well. What was it? Strange. Was it freeing in some way?

"You're definitely not the Deb who was here before." She hadn't known. He hadn't wanted her to know, either. There was something different about her. But this Deb. She knew already.

"That's not a bad thing." He assured her quickly.

At least now he knew where she stood on things. Well, not personally speaking, but knowledge wise.

"This is really sort of strange."

"I thought we'd already established that." Deb said. The one he was talking about must not have known about him. Deb sort of wished that she didn't know about him sometimes, but there was nothing she could do to erase it. What was done, was done. And it was very important to remember that in the end he had chosen to save her life.

"It is a little bit." Deb agreed. "But I'm getting used to strange here. You should see some of the things Anita and I have to deal with."

Dexter nodded. "I'm sure that more strange things will happen. They seem to never stop. I met Spock." He said it sort of flatly. "I threw a donut at him."

That would always stand out in his mind as one of the most absurd things that had happened in the City since he'd been here. Other things were there, of course, but that. That was just the icing on the cake for Dexter.

"Are you adjusting okay? Finding out things you need to know? Anita's helping you?" And there was the brotherly protective part that had been taught into him.

"Spock? Are you fucking for real?" Deb asked her brother. That was a strange thing if she'd ever heard one, but that was to be expected with a place like this, wasn't it? She hadn't met anyone fictional yet, and she wasn't quiet sure what her reaction would be, save for over use of the 'f' word. Deb had quite a fondness for that particular word.

"Well as can be expected." Deb said. "Anita is pretty cool, it'll take time to get used to everything though. I mean...fuck Dex, fictional characters? I mean am I gonna run into fucking Luke Skywalker soon?"

"Yeah." Dexter nodded. "I was walking to work, suddenly he was there, and the only thing I could think of to do was to throw my donut at him. To make sure he was actually standing there and not some sort of massive hallucination. Then, then I took him shopping so he could blend in with everybody."

It really did sound absurd, didn't it?

"You might. I haven't seen anybody from Star Wars, but that doesn't mean they're not out there. Or not going to be out there. It seems like every day we get somebody new. Just keep in mind that you could meet anyone, from anywhere, and it will be less of a shock when it happens."

Dexter shook his head, trying to think if he should tell Deb everything he had been through, all that he'd seen, and then decided that it might just be better if she learned for herself.

"You know how to navigate this place then? Did you find your apartment?"

"Spock?" She asked again. "You went shopping with Spock?" She had to hold back a giggle at the prospect of Spock ever fitting in. "Weren't the ears a dead giveaway?" She asked him, shaking her head a little. Absurd wasn't the word for it.

"So fiction can be real here, got it." She was becoming so much more accepting of such things. Maybe it helped that she knew Dexter was here. If he was good with it, well then she could be good with it too.

"Yeah I'm pretty good on all that. I have a car too, it took awhile to find but it's nice. A 67 mustang convertible, candy apple red."

"Yeah. I went shopping with Spock. We got him a hat..." Dexter mimed a head covering, a little lamely. Then shrugged. "They covered his ears. I think he's done it before."

Dexter stared at her for a long moment. Not knowing what else to say. What he wanted to ask her about the most was the one thing that they couldn't really talk about at the moment.

So he decided to latch onto that last little bit. The car.

"Where the hell did you find a car like that? Here?"

"Shopping with Spock." Deb repeated once more, she couldn't quite get over that. It was great to see Dexter right now, even if neither of them were addressing the very obvious elephant in the room.

"I don't know Dex." She told him honestly. "I just had the keys. Apparently the city wanted my new partner and I to be able to get around." They'd had a bitch of a time finding it though. It had taken days and paying off some juveniles to actually locate it.

"You can borrow it sometime." She teased.

He nodded. "That happens sometimes. You just get things you need or want out of nowhere. I haven't had to go grocery shopping once since I got here, which is nice. Considering how much I eat." He shrugged a bit.

"I don't have a car. I walk everywhere." Or he stole a car, or borrowed one from work. Depending on what he needed it for. "My boat is here though, which is sort of weird. Been out on it a few times."

Talking about the boat made him think of George. He wondered what she was up to.

"Yeah I haven't actually been shopping either. Fucking weird." Deb said. She hadn't even thought about it until now but that was a very good point. Things they needed just seemed to appear.

"Well you can borrow mine sometime." Deb offered. "Just bring it back with a full tank of gas." She smirked a little. Fuck it was good to see her brother again. It was pretty nice to now that even in this crazy world, Dexter was here so she wasn't totally on her own. Even if he was a killer.

"Anyway, I should probably get back to work..." She was a busy woman here, it was different than back home but it kept her mind off Rudy and how scared she truly was.

"Yeah. Me too." Dexter smiled, nodded. "I'm glad you're here. It was good to see you. We'll get together."

This time, he wouldn't let things fade away. He wouldn't just think she was off trying to get used to the city.

He sort of half saluted he as he turned to go, shoving his hands into his pockets.

He was going to have to think about what this would mean, Deb knowing what he was. Think on it a lot.

"We will." Deb agreed. It was weird being around him knowing what he did. What he was.

She watched him go, and then headed out herself.
