In need of a drink
[Open for Lee or any other interested ladies]

A warm wind swirled around the doctor as he walked out of the hospital. He frowned, looking on the ground for the mounds of snow that had been there when he arrived. All gone. And now he was starting to sweat in his heavy wool coat.

Wilson pulled his coat off and folded it over one arm. He looked right and left, but no one was in sight. He contemplated going home to his lonely apartment, ordering in dinner and watching a dvd, but it held no appeal. After his talk with Cameron, he realized he did need to get out more.

He decided to start tonight.

He walked aimlessly around the street, looking for a bar that wasn't too upscale or too run down. Wilson wanted a place that served some bar food, a few kind of beer, and no fancy drinks with umbrellas. He found himself before a solid wooden door about 15 minutes after leaving the hospital, pushing his way into a slightly full bar playing BB King.

He hung his coat over a barstool and slid himself on, motioning over the bartender.

"A Guinness from the tap, thanks. Is there a menu?"

Wilson waved his hand, almost hitting the waitress bringing his food over to the table.

"Idealist, really. Hard to believe at my age, but I still believe in the inherent goodness of people. Well, most people. Some of the doctors I have working for me....not good. Not sure they count as human."

He took a big bite of his first slider and wiped the corner of his mouth with a napkin.

"I bet all the teenage boys have a crush on you. Is getting teenagers organized much like herding cats or trying to get medical professionals to come to staff meeting? I sympathize. Is everyone in the school all right after the zombie crisis and massive amounts of snow?"

Lee leaned back in her seat, smirking. "Sure. Whatever lets you sleep at night, James," she said, taking a healthy gulp of her drink. "Yeah, well. 'Human' isn't so much a set behavior as it is a species. There's that whole free will thing to consider, isn't there? And way more people will take the option that brings them pleasure at the cost of everyone else than will take the one that's for the greater good."

She reached across the table and took one of the mozzarella sticks. "Kind of like cats, except I think I'd prefer it if my students only meowed and scratched." She chewed thoughtfully and chuckled despite herself. "I think I tend to intimidate the students who swing that way. I can't imagine why," she said dryly. "Far as I know, they're peachy. And I guess the hospital must have been okay, since I'm pretty sure it'd leak out in a newspaper somewhere if there were any kind of big disaster. They like those. You'll sell a million more copies if you have a burning hospital on the front page than you will with little kids winning awards or whatever the fuck counts as good news these days."

Wilson grimaced and drank more of his beer.

"Unfortunately, I'm afraid you're right. People are mostly selfish animals. They ignore their free will and act purely on instinct and habit. Sad. The hospital is fine, except I'm afraid it was two of my doctors who may have not-so-accidentally set the zombies into motion. You'd think zombies would sell more papers, but no. We just muddle along, treating who we can and burying those we can't help."

He sighed.

"Well, I'm glad I'm not the only one here who isn't ridiculously optimistic or a superhero or from the future."

It really took everything in Lee not to snort beer out of her nose. Not that she considered herself a superhero, mind. And naturally, she'd beat the shit out of anyone who so much as suggested that she was.

Still, if the cape fit...

"Nope. Just an ordinary schmuck trying to get drunk." As if to prove her point, she took a big gulp of her drink, Yep, not nearly drunk enough yet. Never drunk enough. "You know, if you're looking to get laid, it's probably not a good idea to steer the conversation towards zombies. Unless that's a turn-on for you, which I gotta say, I don't really approve of."

As for the doctors thing... she'd decide later whether or not she wanted to pursue it. She had this guy's name (his first, anyway), his face, and his workplace in case she ever wanted to follow up on it. But for now, Much Deserved Night Off.

Wilson managed not to choke on his burger.

"Sorry, will avoid zombies from now on. Not a turn-in. Check. Understood. So what is a turn-on then? What would you like to talk about?"

He was willing to go with the flow. Provided the flow didn't lead to being tied to the ceiling in someone's basement. Though, that could have it's good points....

"Well, you know. About stuff that doesn't involve the mobile dead."

She took another long, long drink. Seriously, what the fuck did normal people talk about? Her experience was pretty much limited to another angel that she would as soon kill as ever see again, the son of a bitch who ran Bete Noir, and a blind opera singer who had died hours later. None of those seemed normal in the least, and there hadn't really been a lot of talk beforehand.

"I don't know. Rainbows or bunnies or some shit?" She waved over the bartender for a refill on her beer. Fuck it. She'd never been good with small talk. "So if you're planning on fucking me, I guess I have to know a few things first. STDs: do you have them? Weird kinks: do you insist on them? And relationships: are you looking for one? Because two of those three are non-negotiable. I don't do crotch rot or cuddling. Anything else depends."

He nodded, chewing. It gave him time to process and think.

"Personally, bunny shit doesn't turn me on, but I'm willing to explore. I don't have any STDs, I check pretty frequently to make sure. It would wreak hell on my professional and personal life. I don't have any particularly weird kinks beyond liking strong women and giving in to my best friend even when I know it's going to hurt me, not in a sexual way though. I am not looking for a relationship. I've been divorced twice, I don't think I'm ready for one. Even if I was, I wouldn't form any attachments here in the City. I'm still holding out hope of going home one day."

Wilson shrugged.

"I do feel the need to fix people, but I'll settle for scratching an itch for the same in return, if you're interested. If not, I'm having a fun conversation with a beautiful woman and no harm, no foul."

Lee cracked a smile. A half-smile, anyway, the kind that hinted at "heh" much more than it did a full-blown moment of amusement. Codependent divorcee? She'd done much worse. Much, much worse. And really, he wasn't that bad to look at, either.

"That's fair. No relationship, and no fixing." She pointed a finger at him, in a quasi-serious sort of way. "God knows I haven't gotten laid in a hell of a long time, and I'm not fucking up a potentially good time with that shit. We're clear?"

Besides, any attempt to fix her was doomed to end in one of two ways: either the fixer would end up abandoning the task (as her story was pretty damn outlandish, and there were entirely too many things beyond any sort of repair deep in her soul), or Lee would get pissed off and punch the fixer through as many plate glass windows as she could find before she felt better.

She was damn sure that neither of them would be too pleased about assault and battery as foreplay.

"We're clear. No fixing and no attachments."

He finished off his food and took another swig of his beer. Buying time? Not really, just enjoying the whole experience of the night. It had been a long time for him, as well.

"So, I really don't want to be a cliche, but it has to be discusses. Your place or mine? God, even hearing that makes me sound like an ass. Sorry."

A half smile crept across his face.

"Yours," she said, without a moment's pause. No way she was going to let anyone into her place unless she had to. It was hers, dammit.

"So, more food, booze, and awkward conversation or..." Lee waved a hand vaguely in the direction of the door. She gulped down more Ambar and wondered briefly which she preferred. Beer was good. Sex was good. Whatever.

Wilson motioned with his empty pint glass towards her partially-full one.

"I'm a big boy. I can wait until you finish your beer. I'll even be ok if you want another drink. However, my personal preference would be to make our way back to my place and pray like hell that the City streets don't move on us."

Lee grinned wickedly. "Five seconds. Time me." She tilted the glass up and downed the last of her drink in a few large gulps. She smacked her lips and wiped her mouth with a napkin. "How'd I do? And remember, this is on your ticket."
