Partners in crime-fighting [Deborah]
Anita shook the snow off her hair and coat as she walked in the front door of the City Police Department. She flashed a warm smile at the guard who sat bored at the front desk, untwisting paper clips. Stomping snow off her boots, she meandered her way past the maze of desks to her office.

She didn't notice the sign on the door had changed from "X-Files Department: Federal Marshall Anita Blake" to "Preturnatural Crimes: Federal Marshall Anita Blake and Detective Deborah Morgan". Oops.

What couldn't escape her notice, though, was  the note left on top of her penguin coffee cup. Someone knew how much she needed her morning cup (or three) of black coffee. She read it and looked around, noticing that the desk that had been there when she arrived for Fox had been replaced in the corner of the room. There was a coat rack now too. She hung her dripping black parka over it, ignoring the puddle of melting snow that formed on the floor. Her scarf and hat quickly followed.

"New partner? Well, hopefully she's not as prejudiced as Dolph was, there are a hell of a lot of monsters here that are on the side of right and quite a number of humans who are really monsters. At least I don't have to worry about some macho asshole trying to help the little lady. I'll help him right to being a soprano, dammit."

Anita hit the button on the coffee machine and waiting for the smell of hot caffeine to fill the office, She wrapped her hands around her mug after filling it and stood at the window, watching the snow fall. And fall. And keep falling until the cars on the street all skidded to the sides and stopped.

"Shit."

Deb had absolutely not one clue how she had gotten here. She was baffled at this, it was definitely a police station but this was definitely not Miami. It was cold and snowing. Had she been kidnapped?

Don't be fucking stupid Deb, why would someone kidnap you and bring you to a police station?

She hated that it was the first thing she thought of, that she'd been kidnapped. How could she help it though? Rudy Cooper had done a number on her, and she wouldn't soon forget it, as much as she tried to pretend that she had. She pulled out her gun and opened the door slowly, peering inside. This was fucked up.

Where the hell was she? And how did these people know who she was? She aimed her gun at Anita, with a dangerous look in her eyes. "Start fucking talking. Who the fuck are you? Where the fuck am I? Why the fuck is my name on this door?" That was just to start with. Deb suspected she would have many more questions.

Her hand on the gun was a little shaky, she didn't like not knowing what was going on.

A sign on the door caught her attention though, she couldn't overlook it. It was her name, hers and some other woman's. What kind of game was this?

Anita heard the footsteps behind her but continued watching the snow. As a stream of frantic, cursing questions came out of the woman's mouth (who, by the way, she could see quite clearly in the window without turning around yet), she smiled. Oh, this one was right up her alley.

"Good morning, you must be Detective Morgan. And you're new. When I got here, I almost shot someone trying to get answers, so trust me when I say I feel your pain. Now why don't you put down that fine piece of hardware and I'll catch you up on the hellhole we find ourselves in now? It could take a while, you might want some coffee. It's mine, not the stations, so it won't make your intestines feel like an internal combustion engine."

She sipped her coffee and finally turned around.

"By the way, I'm Anita Blake. We seem to be working together."

She waved her coffee cup at the note on her desk before sipping again.

"Read it and see. We're partners at the City Police Department, Preturnatural Crimes Division. Welcome to the wild side."

How the fuck does she know my name?

Relax, Deb, it's on the fucking door, remember? Jeez, what would Dex say?

Deborah slowly and deliberately lowered her gun. She could get it again at any time she thought was necessary. "Coffee...would be great." Deb said, still staring in wonder at this place.

"This doesn't exactly look like vice." She mused. She picked up the note from the desk and read it. "Preternatural Crimes?" She questioned. Wouldn't Dexter get a kick out of this? Whatever this was all about, it was an improvement over that stupid sex suit.

"So...I'm not gonna have to dress like a hooker am I? Cuz I gotta tell you, that gets old fast."

Anita smiled.

"No, not Vice. We get all the weird and crazy cases, which are plentiful in the City. I'm used to it, but I get the feeling you might need some adjustment. No big deal."

She drained the dregs of her coffee out of her cup and frowned. That hadn't lasted long at all. She walked past the jumpy newcomer and poured herself another cup of coffee.

"I promise not to make you dress like a hooker, unless you want. Then you're free to tart it up as much as you like. I used to occasionally have to wear the stilettos and leather for.....uh, meetings, something I'm glad not to have to do here. One thing I don't miss about being Lupa to the wolf pack. oh man."

"Weird and crazy ones?" That was just what Deb needed. She frowned and poured herself a coffee. This was all a little much for her to take in. First finding out about Dex and now being in this weird place and already assigned. It beat vice though, as weird as it was.

"I don't want." Deb told her, stirring the coffee. "I definitely don't want." She nodded, looking at the other woman. She had no idea what she was talking about. Wolf pack?

This was the single weirdest thing to happen to Deb, ever. And she'd been kidnapped and nearly chopped to pieces which was not exactly normal.

Anita smiled as Deborah took some coffee. That should help things. Anita found that coffee always helped.

"Yea, we get the unexplained, the vampires, the werewolves, the zombies, etc. Don't worry too much about it, I've had years of experience in this area. You seem like you'll catch on quickly. Either that or you'll be dead. So I assume you'll catch on quickly. The City brings us here for a reason. though I'll be damned if I can figure it out."

She sniffed her coffee. It could use a little Irish in it, but 9 am was a little early for that. It could wait until lunchtime.

Deb made the coffee how she liked it and took a sip. It was hot, and that felt good with all this cold. And drinking coffee was something so normal for Deborah, and it helped to have something normal when you were faced with something that was anything but. The steam from the coffee traveled up through Deb's nostrils and she breathed it in deep as she listened to Anita, her new partner? As she listened to the woman telling her about the kind of work she did.

Vampires? Werewolves? Zombies?

Certainly you must be fucking dreaming Deb, there is no way all this could be fucking real, is there?

"I do catch on quickly." When she wasn't being kidnapped and nearly butchered by her ex-fiance, that was. "Fuck." Deb said, looking at the floor for a long moment. "You know how fucking nuts this sounds?" She probably did, but Deb was not usually faced with this kind of weird.

A couple more long sips of coffee and a look around the office later, Deb turned to Anita, shaking her head. "So do we have an assignment yet or what?" She was obviously in crazy town and she might as well just go with it, right?

Anita raised an eyebrow at the cursing. Deb was just as bad as she was. This was going to be pretty awesome, at least for a while.

"Yea I know how fucking nuts this sounds. This whole damn place is pretty fucking nuts, but eventually the human mind can get used to anything. I met Batman. I shit you not. Bruce Wayne. He was really really hot. I'd do him. But that's besides the point. My point is....well, it's weird here. But you can make some things as much like home as possible and deal with the rest. Partner."

Speech done, she frowned and flipped through the mess of papers on her desk.

"Shit, I haven't been in here much. During the recent aforementioned zombie crisis, the City kept me licked up in my apartment so I couldn't help. Truth is, I think a lot more people would have ended up dead that could have been cured if I'd been out there, but oh well."

Muttering to herself she shifted all the papers around.

"Zombie case, zombie case, zombie case, all those are done with, investigating who was responsible...assigned to Government and her partner? She has a partner? That's new, I should definitely go meet this Crews fellow, see how they're getting on. Hmm. We have reports of a zombie victim coming back to life on a park bench but I think I may know who that is, there can't be too many women in the City with multiple guns who have legs as long as I am tall. No emergency type cases right now, but give it an hour or so. We'll probably get something. Any questions in the meantime?"

"Bruce fucking Wayne?" Deb asked, shaking her head again. That was pretty incredible, though it too sounded crazy. Deb really had to just go with it though. She didn't really have any other option here, except denial. And when it all came down to It, Deb could really use a break from thinking about Rudy and almost being hacked apart.

"Guess that's what I'll have to do." Deb agreed. She thought it sounded weird to have a partner, but she was thrilled not to be a vice detective anymore. It was weird here, everything about it was weird but Deb would just have to get used to it. It didn't help to dwell on the fact right now, it was best to get an assignment and move on, deal with whatever came along the way.

"No. I'm good." Deb told her, just trying to take everything in. This whole thing was nuts but what the hell, Deb was going to just go with the flow. If it turned out she was dreaming, that was fine. It was more likely though, that all of this was real. She took a few more sips of her coffee. "Well it sure beats fucking vice." She commented.

Anita stared into her coffee cup and muttered.

"I wish I was fucking Bruce Wayne. Or Angel. Dammit I miss Jean-Claude. Did I say all that out loud?"

Looking up at her partner, she shrugged.

"I've never been in Vice, but from what I can tell, almost anything would beat Vice. Maybe even Internal Affairs. At least you get to wear a suit and screw with people rather than risking murder and mayhem every day. I mean, murder and mayhem has it's place and all, but it's hard to live every day. I know that one for sure. I'm glad to not be caught in eternal power struggles anymore. And that's eternal meaning eternal, not some figurative way of implying it's taken a long time."

Deb caught what she had said but she didn't comment on it. She was not interested in fucking anyone right now. Her last relationship hadn't ended so well. Poor damaged Deborah. Would she ever be the same?

"I mostly got to wear little sex suits and interrogate hookers." And that was a life that she didn't want to go back to, even if it was admittedly a lot fucking safer than homicide. And now she was going to be solving the freaky cases with Anita here, at least she wouldn't have to think too much about Dexter for awhile.

"What did you do before you came here?" Deb asked Anita, curiously.

Anita ran her hand through her curly hair, pulling it out from under her collar where it always tended to get stuck.

"Part of the time I worked with the Regional Preturnatural Investigation Team, more amusingly known as RPIT. I also worked as an animator, meaning I brought zombies to life and laid them to rest, as well as a licensed vampire executioner. Having my particular talents and tendencies, I ended up getting deeper and deeper into the darker side of things. I was vampire servant to the Master of the City in St. Louis, Lupa of the Thronos Roke werewolf pack, Nimir-Ra of my own pack of wereleopards and general go-to killer of all things monstrous and evil."

She plopped down behind her desk in her comfy black leather chair, both legs thrown over one arm of the chair.

"Things are a little quieter here, which I'm starting to like, but I worry about my boys back home. How they're doing without me. I'll kill them if they're doing just fine.

Anita grinned.

Everything that Anita was saying sounded so unbelievable, like something out of a movie or something. And yet, Deb was starting to believe all of it. It was hard not too now. There really was no other explanation for being in this place. It was all strange and mysterious but that was something that Deb would have to get used to.

She looked at the other desk. "So is this supposed to be mine?" She asked. She figured it was because no one else's name was on the door save for hers and Anita's, and Anita clearly had the other desk in the office. "It's just kind of weird to walk in here and already have all this."

If this life was quiet for Anita, she wasn't sure she wanted to know what exciting was. All of this would take some getting used to, but Deb was confident she would be able to handle it well enough.

Anita leaned her head back over the other arm of the chair to look at Deb.

"Yea, that's your desk. Feel free to decorate any way you want. As long as I can have my coffee mugs, I'm happy. The City tries to give us what it thinks we need, most of the time. Sometimes it just fucks around with you to see what you'll do, but most of the time it lets you do your own thing."

"You speak about this place like it's some kind of sentient being." Deb commented. Was it? And how did the City know what Deb was looking for exactly? She did need a distraction from her messed up life, but was this it? Chasing down vampires and werewolves in a strange place known only as the City? Did she have a choice?

"Yeah, I'll keep decorating in mind." Except that Deb didn't have anything here, did she? And for that matter, where was she supposed to live?

Anita turned her computer back on and waited to see if she had any messages waiting for her.

"Yea, the City has a mind of its own. The streets move around a bit, so keep your destination or goal in mind when you're walking. You may want to check your pockets for keys. If you find one, like I did, walk around outside concentrating on finding your apartment or whatever the key opens. You'll end up somewhere. I ended up with a really spiffy apartment, but others end up at the Bates Motel. SO who knows?"

"Huh." Deb said. "Isn't that fucking special?" Did she not have enough to deal with without moving streets and trying to find her apartment...or wherever it was she was supposed to end up living, no staying, because this was not permanent, staying while she was here. She hoped wherever her place was, it wasn't too dumpy.

"I did have keys." She commented. "I didn't know what the fuck they were though. Too many for just a house or something. Think I have a car here?" She had just disregarded the keys when she found them originally, but now they might mean something.

Anita shrugged.

"It's possible. Maybe you got the car we're supposed to use to get around the City and investigate shit, because I sure didn't get a car. That would actually work out pretty well. Definitely let me know if we have a car."

"How would I know?" Deb asked. If they had a car, Deb certainly didn't know where it was parked. "I mean, where would it be?" Because if she had to search this whole place in a blizzard would not be very fun for a girl from Miami.

"I don't think we should go looking till all this stops." Deb paused and looked very seriously at Anita. "It will stop, won't it?"

"How the hell should I know where to find a car? I haven't found mine, if I even have one. We can go around parking lots and try the key on ever car. Anyone bothers us, we whip out our badges and hassle them into helping us. I like harassing people, it passes the time."

Anita tipped her head to the side so that she could look out the window, albeit upside down.

"The snow should stop eventually. I think the City didn't put a lot of thought into this snow thing, just thought it would be fun to have a lot of snow. I'm from the mid-West, we know snow. And it can really suck. So I predict it stopping in the next day or two, if not sooner. Another grand experiment. Feh."

Deb grinned at what Anita said. She liked her already. That and the fact that Anita didn't call Deb puta seemed to solidify this little partnership of theirs. Anita reminded Deb a lot of herself, which could potentially be bad, but for now it was okay.

"Well I'm from Miami." Deb reminded her. "I'm not used to this at all." And she was hoping that it let up very very soon.
