Fixin' for a Date (Mal and Kyle)
Kaylee was excited. There was no getting around the fact that she had been runnin around the corridors, jumping up and down the steps, and making all sorts of noise while inside her bunk. Mal had to have noticed, perhaps Wash had too, but Kaylee didn't mind. She was so happy to just be goin' out on a real date. Sure, this had been a terrible place at first. She almost died, or was dead, or whatever. Simon was not her Simon so they weren't together. And Serenity was stuck on the ground. But now, now she was renewed. She'd fixed an engine, and got asked out by a really really really pretty guy. She had to stop thinking about Simon, Mal had told her the truth and she'd been heartbroken too long. Now she was gleefully fixing her hair and her face and making sure not one speck of dirt hit the nice shirt and pants she was wearing.

She could hardly contain herself.

She'd have opted for a dress but it was mighty cold outside and while Kaylee didn't mind the thought of having to cling to Kyle's side for warmth, she was sure if Mal saw that she looked a bit cold before leaving she wouldn't be going anywhere. She pulled on one of her brown coats and looked herself over again.

She'd told Mal. The look on his face was.. Well he wasn't making her stay here, yet at least. And he was willin' to at least meet Kyle. Kaylee knocked on his bunk door finally. "Come on Mal! I don't want to be makin' him wait!" She cheerfully called down before bounding towards the cargo bay.

First things first. Mal and Kyle had to meet. Then she'd quickly show him Serenity and then.. whatever it was he had planned. Kaylee would have told Mal not to wait up, but then Mal would probably..

Kaylee just beamed up at the walk way when she heard him coming down it. "So how do I look?" Kaylee twirled around once. It wasn't too girly, but it wasn't covered in grease either. She'd obviously took the time to make her hair look nice, and do her make up (something Inara normally did for her). "I almost asked Inara if I could borow one of her fancy dresses, but they'd be a little.. Cold in this weather." She smiled. It was almost 7. He'd be knocking any minute. Kaylee was still bouncing.

She might just explode.

They all owed not freezing to death to the fact that at least Serenity's generators worked. It kept the lights on, the temperature comfortable and the ship capable of most things -- just not flight.

Still, Mal's quarters were illuminated and comfortable and served as an excellent hideout to keep from Kaylee as she floated around the boat waiting for her date to arrive. Whoever this Kyle was, he had just one thing going for him -- he wasn't the pretentious doctor. What he had going against him was distracting Malcolm Reynold's mechanic from getting the Firefly class ship to break atmo. Getting between Mal and the black was a dangerous place to be.

The browncoat grumbled something when Kaylee came knocking and eventually opened the hatch to his bunk and climbed up into the passageway leading to the cargo bay. He had on his usual outfit, minus his duster since he had no plans on leaving the ship. His pistol was still strapped to his side though. Kaylee and Mal had their own ways of making an impression with the young man who planned to come knocking.

Winding his hands around the railing overlooking the bay, Mal let his gaze drop to the excited girl below. "Look like you've never seen a entry coupling in your entire life." So she didn't look like a grease monkey -- it was as close to a compliment as she was going to get out of him.

To say that Kyle was nervous about his date tonight might have been a bit of an understatement. It was kind of odd considering how comfortable he felt around Kaylee all ready. Still, he had all the tale tell signs. A sweaty palm, butterflies in his stomach, and his mouth was pretty dry. He had seen her in coveralls and she had been beautiful. He, understandably, was looking forward to what Kaylee would be wearing tonight.

He’d done his best to clean the interior of the car. The upholstery needed to be redone but with some creative input he had made it look at least presentable. His apartment had only received a once over as far as cleaning went. He’d been too busy in preparing himself to do more. A shower and clean shaven face always did wonders for Kyle. He knew he’d be meeting the captain of the ship, who from all descriptions, sounded like an interesting person. Well, an interesting person with a gun.

The car (in large part due to Kaylee) was running as smoothly as could be anticipated. He did want to take her out to dinner, which was the cliché part of the date that he would happily oblige in. After that? He had a few surprises in store. He wanted their first date to be something she wouldn’t be forgetting any time soon.

It was with all of that in mind that he made his way back to Serenity. He’d really only gotten a glimpse of it when he dropped her off but the ship looked like it had character. Honestly he was looking forward to hearing about it. He’d lived on different planets, been to different galaxies, but it still interested him. What kid hadn’t looked up at the stars before and been completely enthralled?

The trip there seemed longer because all of the thoughts bouncing around in his mind. His first date since breaking up with Jennie; pretty big step considering he had wanted to give up on women all together for all of five minutes. Kyle got out of his car and made his way to the drop bay. At least he thought that was what it was called.

"You say the sweetest things sometimes Captain." Kaylee beamed at him. She felt a mite bit prettier just for it. Kaylee was beaming, and while she wanted very much to please Mal by getting Serenity back into the sky, she also wanted to..

She really liked..

She needed to forget. She needed to move on. She always worked better when happy. Or stressed. But not sad. When she was sad she was nearly useless and Kaylee knew it.

"Please don't shoot him." She mumbled to herself, softly, hoping he wouldn't hear it.

She heard the rumble of his car through the doors, and Kaylee squealed out. "那必须是他!*" She wheeled around. "Come on down Captain. You have to greet him all proper and I uh.. I promised him a tour. Just a quick one I swear. I don't think he's ever seen a spaceship before up close bein' as we're from the future or somethin' like that."

(*That must be him!)

The more excitable Kaylee got, the more it showcased Mal's absolute lack of enthusiasm. Mal knew better than most that there wasn't anything in the 'Verse that could keep Kaylee from being cheerful. So he knew better than to try and squash her eagerness, he simply endured. Besides, Mal fostered some hope that finding out about this 'date' or whatever it was, might get under the doctor's skin.

With little more than a glance towards the squealing, bouncing mechanic, Mal headed down the metal stairs. "I ain't welcome to the idea of anyone that's not crew near the bridge. And he's not to poke 'round anywhere alone." They were the only words of warning he'd give before reaching the cargo bay door controls. Soon the doors shuddered, then began to part, the lower piece extending to rest upon the ground Serenity was all but attached to.

Mal didn't say anything to the newcomer and a well-placed glare could say more than any amount of big talk. He stood with his holstered weapon in plain view. If this guy had anything unsavory planned for his ship or especially his mechanic -- Mal was certainly going to make him think twice about it.

First impressions were usually a pretty big deal. In a lot of ways Kyle felt like he was a teenager picking up a girl for the first time. You were always more nervous about meeting her parents than anything else. Except this time ‘parents’ came in the form of Serenity’s captain. And not just any captain. One that had a gun and a spaceship. Not your every day kind of situation for most people, luckily, Kyle wasn’t most people. Fighting off super powered beings happened to be a job requirement. Which spoke volumes about the fact that he actually was nervous.

He watched with a small amount of fascination as the cargo bay door opened and lowered down until part of it was touching the grab. It was a pretty good way to make an entrance. Standing at the top was Kaylee and a smiled instantly spread across his features. He already knew he wasn’t going to be disappointed but she exceeded any expectation.

The man standing beside her didn’t look so enthusiastic though. He was younger than Kyle had imagined but really did look the part. In fact, if he had to describe Mal, he would have said space cowboy. It fit the description at least. And the part about him owning a gun? That was the truth because Kyle could see it in the holster.

He moved up the ramps towards them (aware of the fact that he hadn’t stopped smiling). “You look beautiful,” he told Kaylee in a soft spoken voice. He wasn’t really sure how to greet Mal. He didn’t want the other man to think he was pretentious or that he was some frat boy trying to steal his mechanic. “I’m Kyle,” he said as he turned to face Mal. “And this is an awesome ship.”

Everyone was giving her compliments lately. Kaylee felt like Inara suddenly. Oh Mal would have hated it if Kaylee mentioned Inara and the compliments she caught. Inara always got a lot of attention, Kaylee was normally looked over. not today! Everyone seemed to be likin' her today, and she had a date to get to soon enough. But she beamed.

"You're looking sharp yourself." She grinned at him. Course now they had to worry about Mal. Kaylee turned her eyes on Mal, and while the smile didn't disappear it did grow smaller. She eyed him, then turned her eyes to where Kyle was, then back to Mal.

Go on. Greet him. Be nice. Or I'll wrench your door locked for a few days and have endless parties.

Yes. She could do that.

She'd just have to keep Wash on her side, and Zoe away!

"She is something, isn't she? I fixed the door, Mal. Didn't even make much of a peep this time."

"Malcolm Reynolds." Mal didn't even look aside to Kaylee for the coaching to introduce himself. No, he hadn't moved his somewhat suspicious gaze from the young man who was currently walking up into the belly of his ship. "Captain of this here ship, Serenity, and her crew."

The fellow approaching him looked a little too put together, too much like them Core-types. Kaylee was setting herself up for a world of trouble if she was getting bothered over another one like that pretentious doctor. Mal's attention returned briefly to the door controls. With a slight shudder, the ramp Kyle had walked up rose and eventually locked close with it's companion piece.

"Not much of a peep at all, Kaylee." Mal sounded rather agreeable to the door being fixed. But there was still one more problem at large. "Take the noise you took out of it and put into making that engine roar so we can see about getting off his rock." It was a not so subtle reminder to either of them that whatever this was.. it was temporary. As soon as Serenity was up and running, Mal was taking his crew back into the skies.

"Nice to meet you, Captain." The ship really was something to behold. He'd been on the Justice League's space craft and a few others but none of them were anything like Serenity. For the most part Kyle flew through the black solo with only his ring protecting him from the outer elements. "Sorry about borrowing your mechanic for the night but I definitely owed her dinner after she fixed my car." He really didn't want to come off as the stuck up type to Mal. Kyle was pretty far from that but first impressions were a big deal.

With the ramp now closed behind him Kyle was able to get his first real look at the inside of Serenity. It was what you expect but more at the same time. He sure there were hundreds of things about the ship he'd never know. Things that only someone like Mal would.

He turned his head to look down at Kaylee and his lips split into a wide grin. "This is a lot more interesting than just going to pick someone up from their apartment or house."

Kaylee grinned and suddenly got up on her toes to kiss Mal's cheek all affectionate like. "Aw, don't be a spoilsport. Can't fix the engine without parts and I'm still havin' trouble locatin' them. Maybe You and Wash'll help me tomorrow to look for them?" Kaylee turned to Kyle with a grin. Nothing could ruin her mood.

Not anything in the whole 'verse.

"Serenity is better than anything in the whole 'verse, far as I'm concerned. Let me show you 'round real quick like, before we go." Kaylee turned around and made her way to the stairs. "Unless of course Captain has anything else he wanted to say?"

A thin smile crossed Mal's lips as Kaylee stretched up to kiss his cheek, offering a nod in quiet agreement to her request for help. To get Serenity in the Sky there wasn't anything he wouldn't do. Being grounded this long was starting to have its own stir-crazy like effect on the browncoat.

"Me?" Okay, so the surprise was feigned. Sure there were things he wanted to say because he wasn't keen on the idea of anything taking his mechanic's focus away from fixing his ship. But Mal didn't like to get involved in the personal lives of his crew. At least that's what he's always say aloud. It was no secret that he'd pull out all the stops to make it clear to anyone who'd dare to harm those he counted within his family that such actions were not tolerated. "Just keep the bridge off your tour. No one that ain't crew allowed up there. With or without escort."
