Character’s Personality: Helga was a benign soul who valued loyalty and hard work. She is warm, compassionate, and caring. In short, she possessed a great many traits that were not common in the tenth century. It didn’t matter who you were or where you came from, everyone was treated with the equal amount of respect and acceptance. She came to be known as Good Hufflepuff for all of the good deeds that she performed.
However, all of that kindness came at a price. She was a little bit naive and sometimes people underestimated her because of it. Stupid, she was not. Helga wanted to see the good in people and believed that everyone had the capacity to be good. Sometimes it just wasn’t the case and it caused her to feel very sad, heartbroken even. There was another drawback. Some of the other Founders felt the need to look after her causing her anger when she feels this is happening.
Despite all of that kindness, Helga was fiercely loyal to her friends and family. She was rather like a mother bear in that aspect. No one got between her and her friends or her and her students. It just was not allowed to happen.
Character’s History: Helga was born in the year nine hundred and sixty nine. She was born in what would be later known as Wales near the Vale of Glamorgan.
She was not one for material possessions. Helga had two favored objects. The first was her ever-expanding book of shadows that contained vast quantities of magical knowledge and a tiny golden cup. The cup had been a gift from a would-be suitor. It wasn't her favorite because it was made from gold; it was her favorite because of the badgers that were carved into its sides.
Helga became famous because of her good deeds and kindness, unlike the rest of the Founders who were known for great skills and intelligence. It wasn't to say that she was any less intelligent or skilled than her counterparts but in a time of great violence and darkness, genuine kindness was a rarity. She had a title, though not noble as it was earned, Good Hufflepuff. She met the Founders one-by-one first. She was either found on the scene, helping survivors of a Giant attack or arrived at a scene of great catastrophe to lend her assistance. When Godric had his great idea to form a school, Helga had been a natural choice.
There were arguments from the start. Who did they teach? What did they teach? How should they go about teaching it? Should they use wood in its construction or should they use the more revolutionary stone? What did they name it? They each submitted several names before Rowena finally found a compromise. Helga had felt that it was rather ingenious of Rowena to decide to take their first initial to name the school.
The business of naming the school was far easier than deciding on who would be taught. Everyone had an idea that ended up excluding another group for various reasons. She could understand Salazar's desire to teach only those that were born in and whose family was loyal to Britain. There were several foreign peoples who were looking to invade and the Vikings were an ever-present threat. Helga could understand Rowena's desire to teach only those that were intelligent but given that literacy was not present throughout the land her goal seemed a little far fetched. Then there was Godric who wanted the bravest of the brave, the warrior class. Helga would have simply been happy enough to teach whoever had wanted to learn.
The arguments seemed to last longer than the actual construction. Every night they would discuss it with everyone leaving the Great Hall angrily. It was a particularly storm night when Helga had finally had enough.
Not once did she raise her voice or speak in anything other than a calm manner. They would all get their wish and yet not. They could each teach the type of student that they liked but the other Founders were free to do the same. Helga informed them that while they were bickering, life outside the castle's walls were getting more dangerous for untrained magic users. They needed to put aside their differences and work together or this experiment of Godric's would never work out. Her compromise was not immediately bought. It, in fact, took several nights for Helga to convince them that her plan was the only one that wouldn't have them resorting to a duel to decide it.
At what time in their lives are they coming into play?: Helga will arrive just after the school became open to students, way before the Founders had their falling out.
Sample RP post:Salazar was being stupid again.
The trouble had begun the other day.
Working with stone, while not new, could be troubling to work with. Even with magic, stone still had to be quarried. It had to be shaped. It had to be transported. Muggles had to be kept unaware of these activities. Then, there were the size aspects. A fort could be manageable but something on the scale that Helga and the others were hoping to accomplish was something completely new. It would take more than just Helga, Salazar, Rowena and Godric.
So when Helga had heard that a wizard had done such, she had immediately sought him out. Theuderic had been kind up to travel to Hogsmeade from Normandy to speak with Helga. The castle he built for a very prominent noble in the area and his kin were composed completely of stone. Theuderic was even kind enough to bring with him his plans and notes.
It was all very valuable advice and they had talked at great lengths. Theuderic was very kind, a little too kind in some aspects, but all had gone well until she had spied Salazar watching them from afar. He had not said anything to them. Instead, he just glowered before moving off. It was only later at dinner that night when he finally did choose to speak. Helga still could not believe that he thought she was being inappropriate around Theuderic. They were speaking, nothing more. They had even been in a public area. What was his problem? They had gone the rest of the night and the next day without speaking. Helga was content to leave it alone until she spied two small snakes in her tent. She recognized the markings as belonging to Salazar. Was he spying on her?
With great haste, she flicked her wand at the pair, transporting them safely into a covered basket. The basket was then picked up before Helga departed from her tent. She was going to have words with Salazar.
Sample Journal Entry: We had another debate today. It’s only the most recent in a long line of dinnertime conversations that might as well be considered arguments for the tempers that are caused to flare today. This time it was about bathing.
Rowena is requesting that all of her students bathe each day. She is also requesting that when she does instruct Godric and Salazar’s pupils that they be freshly bathed as well. The argument was the hottest between Godric and Rowena. Oh, I just wish that they would stop sometimes.
I see nothing wrong with a daily bath. Rowena fails to remember, however, that some of the Muggleborn students see it as vanity. From what I understand, that is preached by a lot of churches. She must get through that first before ordering about students that are not her own. Education is the key. Sometimes it does make me ill to my stomach when I think of what Muggles consider clean but I must not judge them.
I wish sometimes that I had not voice my idea of us teaching just who we wanted and had found another way. I love my students dearly and it does not matter to me where they have come from. It’s just that the faces on some of the little ones when they are not selected for Gryffindor or Ravenclaw look so sad. We’re dividing them before they can even begin.
Anything else we should know about your character?: Helga’s Animagus form is a badger. She’s very good with caring for magical creatures and she knows a great deal about Herbology.
If your character is going to deviate from canon, please give that here along with your reasoning.: Very little is known about Helga Hufflepuff., so there’s not much I can say here. Since witches and wizards, I’m guessing, tended to be taught by their parents (unfortunate for Muggleborns), Helga has a book of shadows. It contains everything she knows and everything that her predecessors knew about magic. However, being that it’s knowledge is so immense and ever expanding, she herself doesn’t know everything that the book contains off the top of her head.
