Having determined that yes, Inara was alive, Eddie had hung around for a bit and than decided that enough was enough. He needed to go for a walk. The hospital and Eddie wasn't a good match, he figured if he stayed there long enough someone was going to ask him what his relation was to Inara, or someone was going to ask him about his gun, or … well there was all kinds of reasons for him ducking outside for a walk to clear his head.
He turned to look at the Hospital muttered a; "Okay, stay." When neither the streets nor the hospital shifted he grinned. "Good hospital. I'll be back in a bit."
A few blocks later Eddie paused in front of a place that called it's self 'Bruce's Video' and glanced in the window. What the hell where DVD's? And what was that ... Lethal Weapon 4? "Jesus." He could vaguely recall Lethal Weapon being out in the theaters. He hadn't gone and seen it, but ..."Must have been good if they made four of them …"
From: i_getdirty Date: 07/26/2006 20:08:38 Kaylee was enamored by the different covers on the plastic boxes propped up in the window. Wandering down the street from the diner, she paused to admire a poster for some old-fashioned Earth That Was drama. My, those dresses were pretty. All the ruffles...kinda like some of Inara's dresses.
Thinking on her friend didn't make her all that happy. She still sat on her bed at night in the the little house over the diner and gazed up at the sky, hoping that maybe she'd see a shuttle or something come down. Or followed men on the street wearing brown leather coats.
Lost in thought, hands shoved in her pockets, still looking over her shoulder at the shop window, Kaylee walked straight into the man who had just made a comment.
"Oh god! I am so sorry," Kaylee apologized, a look of embarassed shock on her face. "I wasn't paying attention to where I was going. You okay?"
From: i_crackjokes Date: 07/27/2006 03:26:47
Once upon a time Eddie Dean would have made a smart ass comment, but that was Eddie Dean who had never traveled father than New Jersey. The Eddie Dean that currently was dropped a hand to his hip, having gone on high alert. But it was a girl, so he let the hand fall away from the gun and tried to relax. Damn nerves.
"Hey, it's okay. I was just checking out the .. DeeVeeDees." Is that how you said it? Edide didn't know. What had ever happened to VHS? And Betta? "You okay?" Eddie had a bit of height on her, and wasn't the scrawny junkie from New York anymore.
From: i_getdirty Date: 07/27/2006 06:15:56
"Yeah..." Kaylee said, stepping back and observing her roadblock. Wasn't a bad roadblock to run into, if she did say so herself. She smiled, tucking her hair behind her ear. Though, checking out guys when they were standing right in front of you probably wasn't a very coy thing to do. Play it coy.
A slight look of confusion crossed her face and she pointed to the window. "What d'you call them?" she asked curiously.
From: i_crackjokes Date: 07/27/2006 16:50:12
Eddie glanced at the window, "Crap did I say it wrong? D--" He paused how could you say that word, there was no vowels! "There movies. I think." He glanced over at the girl, she was dressed .. well .. she wasn't dressed outlandishly but it was possible she was form a when and where in which movies didn't exist.
"Movies, like pictures, that move and talk .."
Oh gold, please let her be from the past. Or the future. Not like .. the year 2000 or something. He was going to sound like an ass if she was.
From: i_getdirty Date: 07/27/2006 17:54:14
Kaylee made a face and shrugged. She didn't know if he was saying it wrong. She didn't know what they were.
"Movies? You mean like a capture?" Movies definitely weren't in Kaylee's vocabulary. "That's what these here look like, but I ain't seen them in boxes like that. We got discs where I'm from, but they're a LOT smaller than those."
From: i_crackjokes Date: 07/27/2006 18:29:12
"Uhh, capture? Like …. A … I don't know what that means." Might as well be honest, but it didn't sound like she was from before his time. She must be from ahead of him. Or possibly … sideways from him. Who knew what other realties had. "Discs? Like for computers?"
From: i_getdirty Date: 07/27/2006 18:45:59
"Oh..." Kaylee giggled nervously. "Discs? Yeah...I've seen them used for computers before. I use discs to program engines too. The T9-625? That engine can practically think for itself. It's more like a chip than a disc, though."
Sorta kinda. Discs were an archaic method, but with older parts, sometimes that was what you had to do.
From: i_crackjokes Date: 07/28/2006 03:20:31
"T9-What now?" That sounded like .. well what had that robot been clalled in the Terminator movie? It sounded like that. Although she said engine. That could almost think for it's self.
He hopped she was kidding.
"What kind of engines are we talking about here? Cars? Trucks? Trains, planes, spaceships?" This last one thrown in, and not sarcastically either.
From: i_getdirty Date: 07/28/2006 05:24:19
"Spaceships," Kaylee said innocently and matter-of-factly. But she understood his confusion. She could rattle on about engines for hours on end. It sometimes took the Captain to shut her up.
"Or boats, as we sometimes call 'em. I'm the mechanic aboard a Firefly class transport ship called Serenity." There, that should explain it.
From: i_crackjokes Date: 07/28/2006 18:09:22
If he hadn't already come across Inara Eddie would at this moment being having the 'Spaceships!' moment. But he had had that moment, and since that moment he had encountered a vampire, and he had also taken a trip in a police box that doubled as a means of transport.
"Oh, well I'm …" a pause. "I travel. A lot. But not by spaceship, I usually use a car …" He figured there could be more people than Inara's people who traveled by spaceships. Maybe. "You have people you’re here with?"
From: i_getdirty Date: 07/28/2006 18:23:31
"Oh, okay. I've come across those cars," Kaylee said, her eyes a little mischevious. "I fixed a delivery van back at the diner a few blocks back." She thumbed over her shoulder. "It's always fun to work on antiques."
"You have people you’re here with?"
That took the smile off Kaylee's face. "Uh...not exactly." She swallowed. "Serenity kinda..." She motioned an explosion with her hands. "She kinda fell apart and I landed here. Ain't seen Captain or Zoë or 'Nara...nobody from the ship." Kaylee looked down at her boots before tucking a stray hair behind her ear. Looking back up at Eddie, she managed a little smile. "But I'm here."
From: i_crackjokes Date: 07/28/2006 19:12:28
"Antiques." Eddie just shook his head. He felt so old sometimes.
"She kinda fell apart and I landed here. Ain't seen Captain or Zoë or 'Nara...nobody from the ship."
And that was all Eddie needed. Looks like he had a new job, reuniting long lost crew members of this Serenity ship. Hopefully this reunion could be borught about with no vampires. That would be nice.
"Nara is it? I think you need to come with me." He turned and started walking down the street. He just hoped The City was going to cooperate and not start moving streets around.
From: i_getdirty Date: 07/28/2006 20:01:07
"Huh?" Kaylee's brow furrowed. "Wait - what are you...?"
She jogged a little to catch up with him. This was odd. Was he one of Inara's clients? He certainly didn't look like her type. But then again...the Senator had been a bit of a surprise too.
As she hurried her steps to keep up along side of the guy, Kaylee glanced up at him. "Do you know Inara?"
From: i_crackjokes Date: 07/29/2006 09:18:47 "I do. Or well I know an Inara, who came from a ship. Friendly with a big guy, bit sullen, goes by the name of Mal, I think?" He glanced down at the girl to see if any of this sounded right to here. "She's … she's okay." He wanted to make that very clear first before he said the hospital word. "She, last time I saw here she was sleeping. In the hospital."
From: i_getdirty Date: 07/29/2006 10:07:18
Kaylee's eyes went huge. She took a few steps ahead of the man and turned, walking backwards so she could face him. "SERIOUSLY?!"
Her lip quivered briefly as she stepped back, then she launched herself at him, hugging him around the middle, briefly stopping their trek towards where Inara was.
"Thank you! Oh my goodness...thank you SO MUCH." Kaylee peeled herself off of the man, not at all embarassed at her outburst. "She's okay? But...but what's she doin' in the hospital?"
From: i_crackjokes Date: 07/29/2006 10:46:21
Eddie got a bemused look on his face after the girl gave him a hug. He felt a whole lot more comfortable when she released him. Girl had a grip on her. Still her exuberance was .. contagious. He was trying to imagine how she, Inara and that grouch Mal got along.
Must be an interesting dynamic.
"Ahh, well long story that. There was this vampire – at least I think it was a vampire, we shot it and it went away, turned to dust, so much dust on the wind – and it bit her. Than that Mal guy, well he got her to the hospital I guess." With some assistance from that other, scary guy with the car.
"Last time I saw her she was doing a Sleeping Bea—She was sleeping." If she was from the future best to keep the pop culture references to a minimum. He paused and looked up to check the street signs. "We take a left here."
He thought. Damn moving streets.
From: i_getdirty Date: 07/29/2006 11:07:11
Kaylee restrained herself from skipping. This man was like Mal - he could handle the bounciness for a while before someone Jayne wanted to put her lights out.
"A vampire?" Kaylee snorted. "They don't exis-" But when he said it turned to dust, she raised an eyebrow in disbelief. "Oh my god."
It was really lucky she ran into this man. "My name is Kaylee, by the way."
From: i_crackjokes Date: 07/29/2006 12:49:53
"Eddie of New -- Eddie Dean, formerly of New York, now of no fixed address." Not that she'd know of New York, but he liked being able to say where he had been from. Being a New Yoker was a defining part of who he was.
He had given her a bit of a grin when she had said that vampires weren't real. "Well he sure seemed real. You can tell any that we run into that they aren't real. This place is weirder than Wonderland. I'm going to hold off on saying what's real and what's not."
He took a left, deciding that the street that away seemed familiar. "This might take a bit, getting back to the hospital, things don't like to seem to stay put here."
From: i_getdirty Date: 07/29/2006 12:55:45
Yeah, I've noticed this place moves a lot," Kaylee said. "It's very nice to meet you, Eddie. How did you meet Mal and Inara? I've been here for a week and haven't seen anybody I knew."
She shoved her hands in her pockets. Eddie was really cute. Enough to make a girl forget certain doctors who barely even noticed she was thumping around in the engine room.
From: i_crackjokes Date: 07/29/2006 13:41:41
"Well I've been here ages and haven't seen a soul from my .. time." Well, maybe he should rephrase that and say he hadn't seen anyone he knew since after all, his people where hardly from his time. His original time anyway.
"But every time I turn I seem to be tripping over one of you folks." His tone was light but there was defiantly a bitter edge to it. He was going to have to track that Rose girl down again, see if her machine could find Susannah, Jake, and Roland.
Right, she had asked how he had met Inara. "Well she found me, I was just … well I as sulking a bit." Eddie was a big boy, he could admit he had been in a funk. "We decided two people working together had a better chance of finding who they where looking for. We located that Mal fellow, he was having a palaver" funny how some of Roland's words had become his words, "with a vampire, Mal shoot it, I shoot it, it went to dust, but Inara got bit before it got dusted."
He had to stop and take a breath. "So off to the hospital they went, and I followed. Thats the Coles notes version anyway."
From: i_getdirty Date: 07/30/2006 15:28:47
"Maybe I should just follow you around if you keep finding Serenity crew." Kaylee smiled coyly. NOT the time to be flirting, but there was never a time like the present, right?
Kaylee nodded as she followed along with his story. Her smile disappeared slightly. "Gosh...we ain't never seen a vampire out in the Black. Reavers..." She shuddered slightly at the mere thought. "...yeah, we've been through Reaver territory, but they aren't vampires. Hell, I've heard stories from Earth-That-Was about those vampires. Don't sound nothin' like a Reaver."
Weird people from the past, making stories up like that. They must have been inhaling too many fumes from their cars.
From: i_crackjokes Date: 07/30/2006 16:48:10
Eddie glanced over at her, it wasn't like he had never flirted before, or been flirted with, but since Susannah he just sort of … didn't notice. So he gave her a grin and shrugged; "Seems to be a talent of mine, stick with me kid and we'll find your people."
And maybe he'd find his people. That would be nice. He wondered if they even realized he was gone, was time still passing back in that version of Kansas? It made his head hurt thinking about it.
Reavers, now there was a word that just didn't sound nice. "Reavers, what are they?" Not nice was something Eddie had a lot of experience dealing with, and if Serenity people where here, well maybe their 'Reavers' where too.
From: i_getdirty Date: 07/30/2006 21:42:56
Kaylee frowned. "Reavers are the worst. They live out on the far edges of the Black. Some say they're folks who never made it to their settlements and went nuts. They resort to eating anybody who comes their way. They skin you alive. They won't eat you if you're dead."
She shuddered. The few encounters they had with Reavers hadn't been pretty. The mere thought of them was enough to give her nightmares for a week.
From: i_crackjokes Date: 07/31/2006 03:23:22
"Cannibals." Reavers nicely translated into something that Eddie could understand, "Cannibals, why did it have to be Cannibals." This said more as an afterthought than anything else. "Well that settles it, you guys aren't from some nice rosy Star Trek-y future where all the aliens look like hippies."
Eddie wasn't disappointed per say, but some of that incredible Star Trek technology would have come in handy. Not to mention those Star Trek people always came up with creative, if improbable ways out of their predicaments.
Hadn't there been episodes where they got trapped in a city? Wasn't there some sort of joke made at that Spock guys expense about his ears getting caught in some sort of farm equipment hence the points? Eddie was pondering this when he realized he had probably left Kaylee behind so to speak.
"Sorry, wool gathering." He glanced over at her; "Reavers, eh. Sound nasty and gross." He wished he could be more horrified, but damnit, he was getting jaded.
