Entry tags:character: hestia jones, character: regulus black

WHO: Regulus Black, Hestia Jones, & npc Sian Jones
WHAT: Interrogation fun
WHERE: The home of Archibald Mulciber
WHEN: Sunday evening
RATING: TBD, might get high

Regulus sat silently, every now and then glancing nervously up at the two tied up women. This wasn't what he expected. He had been eager to show his loyalty to the Dark Lord, even eager to go kill some filthy muggles, but it wasn't as fun as he thought. He had served the killing blow to the mother, and felt a rush of exhilaration. Even kidnapping the two daughters had seemed fun. At first. But the weight of what he had done was creeping up on his heart and wasn't leaving. It sat there and caused him more pain than he cared to admit. He didn't dare say a word to anyone, too scared of both himself and the Dark Lord. Surely He could read his thoughts?

Regulus pushed all of this to the back of his mind and tried his best to look comfortable. It was required of him to take part in the interrogation. The witch had not yet broken, and Regulus did not want to witness this. Currently, he was left alone with these women, keeping guard in a secret room in Mulciber's house. Apparently, the Death Eaters had a number of these places set aside, far away from the eyes and ears of anyone, magical and muggle alike. He couldn't look them in the eye, so instead he stared at the ground, trying to ignore his guilt.

Hestia had no idea what day it was or even how long she'd been here. What the hell did the Death Eaters want with her or Sian anyway? Had they even wanted her or was it just a coincidence that she had been visiting her mum and dad when the attack had happened? She could still her the screaming and the shouting of spells, she'd been able to think of little else.

Occasionally she would try to get some response out of her sister, just to make sure she was okay. Hestia wondered if Sian blamed her for this. She was the only witch there that night. Thank Merlin that Gwenog was at school, untouchable. She sat quietly, wanting very much to sleep or cry or maybe both. Instead she just stared at the Death Eater who had been left to guard them. He was just a boy, really.

Regulus was very much aware of the witch's eyes on him. And it was making him uncomfortable. Well, uncomfortable was a damn understatement. Guilty, horrible, cowardly... pick one. Her eyes were drilling a hole into his heart, and it wasn't helping his resolve. Not at all.

Finally losing the battle, he spoke to her without looking up. "Please stop staring at me," he said, trying his best to sound mean and hardcore.

Hestia didn't trust herself to say anything at first. She was scared, tired, and grieving. She was pretty sure anything she'd say would come out as a sob. She couldn't stop herself from staring though. Maybe if she stared long enough he'd leave and give her a chance to figure something out or he'd just let them go. He didn't seem as resolute as she'd expected.

She took a few deep breaths. "Are you going to kill us?" she asked shakily, not even wanting to think of Sian's chances with these monsters.

Regulus stared back for a moment, after her question, then quickly returned his gaze to his feet. Was he? He didn't think he had it in him to kill her, or kill anyone ever again. It was a horrible feeling, one he couldn't shake. It angered him that he wasn't made of stronger stuff. How did one harden his heart? Was there a book or a manual about this?

Finally he looked up and shrugged. "They probably will," he said simply. He couldn't give her a better answer. Almost inaudibly he mumbled, "I'm sorry."

Hestia sat there a moment, letting his words sink in before she broke down and sobbed. "What do you want?" she asked, still not sure why she was here. "You killed my mum and dad, we're here, there has to be a reason," she fought against her restraints for a moment before stopping and lowering her head, crying.

Regulus stood up when she started crying and began pacing. "No, don't do that!" he practically shouted at her. He was never a ladies man; his brother, it seemed, got that trait. Women generally made Regulus uncomfortable. And a crying woman made him even more uncomfortable.

He kept pacing, and then finally stopped and faced her angrily. "Look, I was just following orders, alright? It's nothing personal..."

Hestia flinched when he shouted, stopping almost immediately. If she was going to die, she wasn't going to go out weeping. "You think that's an excuse for what you've done?" she asked, wishing she could wipe her eyes. "You KILLED my PARENTS. How can you say that isn't personal?" She tried to kick out at him, not that it did her much good.

Regulus didn't think he could feel any worse. "I..." he stammered, trying to explain to her. He was finally accepted, and yet the only thing that he felt was guilt. When she kicked at him, he jumped out of the way and spat on the ground angrily. Suddenly, all his anger came out again. "What do you think you're doing, you mudblood bitch?!"

Hestia watched his anger flare. She was going to die here and this psychopath was going to do it and poor Gwenog would have to go live with one of their horrible aunts. "Why am I here?" she asked again. Nobody had told her yet. They just kept her here, tied up, to contemplate when they were finally going to just end it and kill her. She wondered if it would hurt.

Regulus was finding this to be much harder than he thought. Without thinking he blurted out, "For information! They think you know something about those Order people!"

As soon as the words left his mouth, did he realize his mistake. He stopped dead and stared at her as a horrified look crossed his face.

Hestia watched him and started to cry. She really couldn't help herself. She didn't have anything to do with the Order and they would never believe that. "I don't know anything about them," she said, "Please just let me and my sister go."

Regulus grabbed his hair desperately and began pacing back and forth. "I CAN'T," he shouted. Of course, part of him wanted to just let her go and run with her, but that could never happen. He had too much to lose, his life, his mother's life...

He angrily sat back down in the corner on the floor, just staring out into space. After an eternity, he made a decision. It might cost him his life. With a decisive hand, and before he could change his mind, he quickly pulled out his journal and scribbled a note to his brother. He didn't say a word, as he shut it and stowed it back in his pocket.

"Then let my sister go. You lot can't think she knows anything about these Order people. There's no reason to keep her here. Just let her go home." Hestia pleaded, not sure what else to do. She saw the young man get out a journal, he could be contacting anybody. "Please, just let her go home."

"I already told you. I can't," he said calmly. As far as he was concerned, he did his part. He could do no more.

He sighed heavily and hoped his replacement would get here soon. He couldn't let this mudblood tear down his resolve.

Hestia took a few deep breaths. "I don't want to die," she said resolutely. "And my sister isn't a threat to anybody. You say you can't do these things, but you have as much free will as anybody." She didn't like her odds, especially if another one might be coming. She'd be tortured with more than just the thought of pain and death.
