Entry tags:character: fabian prewett, character: sirius black

WHO: Sirius Black and Fabian Prewett
WHEN: Thursday night
WHERE: Patrolling around
WHAT: Patrol and date night
RATING: TBD, probably not too high

If he were asked the next day, Fabian wouldn't have been able to explain much of what happened in the film he and Sirius had just gone to see. It wasn't that he wasn't watching; he'd actually been trying to pay attention. He just didn't seem able to focus, or all that interested.

Beyond having too much on his mind, Fabian found himself confused by a number of things the film that Muggles would take for granted. It didn't really bother him. He was there with Sirius, and he hadn't come in planning to care much about the film itself.

They'd left the cinema minutes earlier, now needing to focus on patrol. Greta hadn't seemed thrilled by the idea of extra Order patrols near her, but Fabian wasn't about to let her or her father get attacked while he was supposed to be watching. At the moment, they were outside the Catchlove's bakery, though they'd probably be moving before much longer.

"What was that thing called?" Fabian asked, talking about the movie. "A typewrite? It looked complicated."

Sirius like the muggle cinema. He liked the expensive popcorn, hearing people laugh at the same time, and sneakily holding Fabian's hand in the dark. Between the popcorn and covert touches, Sirius couldn't have said what happened in the movie, but he still enjoyed himself.

"The thing with all the buttons with letters on them?" Sirius hitched his shoulders, shrugging. He half-leaned against the wall. "Think it's something like that. Or maybe a buttonwright. Muggles have all sorts of wonky writing do-dads. Like pens."

Fabian mused. "Arthur would like the button one. Or any of them, really, but especially the button one. But the letters didn't even go in order," he added quietly. He didn't know why he was talking about this; he didn't really care.

Except there wasn't much else to talk about, while they were so near the Catchloves and so out in public. It was always awkward for Fabian, being around other people. Order meetings, when he made sure to stand away from Sirius and not meet his eye. Any conversation he had when someone else brought Sirius up, and finding the balance between being interested and being too interested. It was always a challenge.

"They didn't?" Sirius hadn't even noticed.

Deciding to switch the subject to something he actually cared about, and maybe paid attention to, he made a segue by asking, "How are Arthur and Molly, then? Plenty busy with the dibbuns I'm guessing."

"Next one's due in March," Fabian commented. The idea of another Weasley boy overwhelmed Fabian a little. He didn't know how his sister could do it. "Before the twins' birthday even. They're kind of amazing. I can't believe Molly ever has any energy left, but she does."

"Merlin's pants!" Sirius exclaimed, incredulous. Torn between amazement and amusement, his barking laughter filled the otherwise quiet street. "Are they wanting a girl or sommat?"

Fabian shrugged, and rolled his eyes as he smiled. "You know, you ask them that and they're both saying no, we're just happy with healthy children, ten fingers and ten toes and all that. But if this one's a girl I bet she'll be the last one. Though who knows?"

"I'd rather not know, if it's all the same to you." Sirius mirrored the shrug. Which was around the time a random thought occurred to him.

He watched Fabian. "Do you ever want little Fabians running around?"

The question caught Fabian off guard. He glanced at Sirius and blinked a few times before answering. "I...I'm not sure," he answered. He thought for a moment. "I kinda like the idea," he finally said. "I mean, maybe in eight or ten years. Not now. What about you? Mini Siriuses in your future?"

Sirius patted down his robes pockets, searching for where he put his carton of fags. "Eh. Never really thought about it before. Me, a father." He gave a wry laugh and shook his head. "I don't think so. Cig?" Finding them, he only thought it polite to offer.

Fabian shook his head. "Nah," he declined. He didn't mind being cigarette-adjacent, but he himself was bad at smoking and didn't like to show that. "You know by the time Molly was my age, Bill was already born? I don't know. Being an uncle's great but being a dad's...a lot more. I may be alright just staying Uncle Fabian."

Shrugging off the decline, Sirius lit up and took a drag off his sweet clove cigarette. He exhaled the smoke off to the side, away from Fabian.

"It's a lot more, yeah. You have to stop being a selfish twat as soon as you've got a dibbun." Sirius let out a chuckle. "You'd make a great father," he said, grey eyes watching Fabian.

Fabian laughed; he'd probably not describe himself as a selfish twat, but even the least self-involved people on earth would've had to give up more when they became parents. Sirius' follow-up question wasn't lost on him, either. "Where's this coming from?" he asked, trying to keep light but curious if there were something more.

Sirius would call himself a selfish twat. No sense in denying it. To Fabian's question, he hitched his shoulders, shrugging.

"Four months, and you haven't figured out my thoughts skip my thinker and go straight to my tongue?" He barked another laugh. Tapping the cigarette, he flicked the ashes off the end. "Dunno, really. It's pretty daft for us to be talking about becoming parents, come to think of it. Unless you decide you like skirts after all."

Fabian laughed again, but with less mirth. "Pretty much no chance of that," he commented. He didn't want to say it to Sirius, but his disinterest in the female form wasn't for lack of trying.

"But I don't know. I mean, there might be other possibilities. Eventually. Maybe. I don't know. I'm fine for now. I mean, I've got Sylvester to look after."
