Who: Greta Catchlove and Fabian Prewett
When: 4pm Today
Where: Catchlove's Bakery in Diagon Alley
Rating: TBD
Summary: Fabian has some very bad news to tell her.

Sweeping around the bakery at a quarter to four, Greta was finishing up the last of her baking for the day and tucking the cooked goodies into their respective trays on the counters and in the showcase windows. She was in a pleasant mood and hummed some random song she had heard on the wireless the night before as she worked. She didn't know the reason as to why Fabian was coming to see her or why he wanted to go somewhere and talk, but that didn't matter. She considered Fabian a dear friend of hers and had secretly found him very likable for years. Of course, there had been a fleeting moment where she wondered if he was finally going to reciprocate her feelings after she had more or less moved on, but those thoughts lasted a moment at the most. She doubted that possibility, even when she had no other logical one to replace it.

Still, as her song ended, she started up another one, and magically cleaned the baking trays she had been using moments before. It was just as she was putting them up that her dad walked into the shop, said hello, and told her that he would start taking over. She kissed her father, who she looked very much like, on the cheek and went to clean up a bit. After all, even if Fabian wasn't there to reciprocate her former feelings, she still didn't want to be covered in flour, sugar, and all other kinds of sweet, confectionery goodies when he got there.

The news he was going to have to break wore heavily on Fabian. He hadn't wanted to say anything in his journal about it to her, but now that he was there he didn't think telling her face to face was a great option, either. Plus, it made him feel like a bad friend; he hadn't spent much time with her lately and now he only was so he could warn her she might be in danger.

"Hello, Mr. Catchlove," Fabian greeted the man behind the counter as he came into the bakery. He had met Greta's father a number of times, but realized now that he didn't actually know the man very well. "Is Greta around?"

From behind the door to the back room where she was cleaning up, Greta heard Fabian's familiar voice as he greeted her father and asked after her. She quickly wiped her hands and face on the towel she was using and used her backside to push open the door, tossing the towel back inside. "She's right here," she quipped with amusement as she glanced at her father and noticed that his mouth was open, fish-like, and poised to answer Fabian's precious question. Only he had been interrupted, so he was frozen in time for several beats.

"She saddled behind the counter, touched her dad's arm and kissed his cheek again, and then rounded the counter itself so she could meet Fabian more informally. "So, am I going to have to wait much longer to find out what you wanted to talk about?" she asked with marred impatience.

Fabian blinked a few times before responding. He wasn't smiling and from his expression, it wouldn't take much to realize something was wrong.

He looked around the bakery, glad for a moment that he was the only customer there. He'd debated whether to tell her and her father at the same time and finally decided that would be best. If he'd taken her somewhere else to tell her, she'd probably just hurry back anyway. That's what he would've done.

"I'm not sure how..." he trailed off, then decided just to say what needed to be said. "We think you're in danger. Both of you," he added, looking toward her father. "I don't know why or how exactly but we think They may be targeting you."

Greta did notice Fabian's expression as the moment progressed and her smile began to falter. By the time he settled on the word 'danger,' the grin had fully disappeared and a frown replaced it. As he used the unfamiliar pronouns of 'we' and 'they,' both she and her dad stared at him in confusion. But a beat later, recognition and realisation dawned on her, and Greta looked alarmed.

"Why on Earth would they be targeting us?" she asked quickly, her voice higher than usual. "We just run a shop - we aren't even a threat to either side!"

"I--I don't know," Fabian faltered. "I really don't. I'm not even sure how we found out, to be honest. I just... I mean, we thought you should know right away."

He took a deep breath before continuing. "Is there any reason you can think of they might be after you? It doesn't always take much with these people."

"Of course," Greta breathed, her eyes on her father. He rarely took bad news well, especially the sort of bad news that involved his family. She hoped he could handle this.

Looking back at Fabian again, she bit her lip in thought. Why would they be after her and her family? It made no sense! Other than serving everyone equally and obviously being friends with Fabian and several other likely members of that Order of the Phoenix group, neither she nor any of her family members stuck out like a sore thumb. "Maybe because I helped that woman? Dorcas Meadowes? Or because I consider many of your group friends of mine? Or because we -" She gestured between herself and her father. "Won't tolerate or allow for that whole blood purity bollocks to enter into our shop? I don't know. I don't know why they would target us, Fabian."

Fabian sighed. "It could be any of those things, or all of them. Or none of them, who the hell knows. But we're going to be doing extra patrols here and anywhere you all go. We'll be keeping an eye on you and if you need anything at all..." What she and her father were going to do with the information was for them to decide, but Fabian wanted her to know they'd help out any way they could.

The shock was quickly wearing off and a sense of resentful anger was settling in. Yes, she was still very worried about her family and herself, but she was also feeling bitter towards those who planned on targeting the Catchloves, too. Hadn't they been neutral all this time? What had they done to anyone to warrant such a thing?

"We'll let you know," she filled in when he was finished, her voice sounding determined from the anger she was feeling. She hated the idea of needing to be watched after. Hufflepuff though she may be, she was still a very proud and independent individual, and wasn't particularly fond of needing others to look after herself.

Fabian felt Greta's shift in mood, and wasn't sure how best to respond. He waited for a moment to see if she had more to add, then finally decided to speak up again. "If I find out anything else at all..." he trailed off, looking at her with concern in his eyes.

"Then you'll let us know?" she added in without missing a beat without realising her shift in mood had affected him. But still, she sighed a moment later and reached up to run her fingers through her hair that she had actually let down. This was just brilliant.

"Thank you for letting us know ," she added a moment later, glancing at her father and seeing him nod in agreement with her. He had been far too quiet about the whole thing, though she knew he would have quite a bit to say about it later. "Really. I don't know why they'd want to target us, but thanks."

Fabian nodded and considered for a moment. "I ... can stay, for a while, tonight," he suggested awkwardly. "I mean, just in case, you know..." He had nothing else to offer at the moment, but he did know that if he were in her position he'd want someone else around too, beyond just his family.

Having someone around to stay sounded both promising and hindering. Never one to actually let many of her more negative emotions show publicly, Greta was presented with a scenario that would have her keep up the impending rant and angry cooking spiel when she got home. However, Fabian's sincerity and obvious concern had her agreeing before fully thinking about.

"Only if you want to," she said and glanced at her father. She knew he would be okay at the shop since he wouldn't be closing by himself, but she would be going home by herself. And if the Death Eaters really were targeting her and her family, that would be their perfect opportunity. "I wouldn't want to put you out, especially since you've given us forewarning."

Fabian shook his head as he spoke. "It wouldn't put me out, Greta, don't be silly," he said softly. He studied her, unable to read her expression. "I just want to make sure you're safe."
