The Music is Over, Turn Out the Lights

Well we didn't win, but still did VERY VERY well. People know we are out there and know what we stood for. The instant run off ran us all the way into Round #18 and we ended up 5th overall and would have been in 4th if we had 4 more votes!

I am going to continue my crusade to get the open source version of the code better taken care of. And this may or may not involve LJ/SUP depending on the stance they take. I am ready to start a new project that branches off of LJ.

I want to thank everyone who voted for me and who supported me. I hope that legomymalfoy does a good job and pushes LJ in the right directon.

Squeaky Clean

Today is the final day of voting for the LJ Advisory Board Election.

The fact is that, as of this post, Squeaky is not in the lead.

However, my opinion is that Squeaky still deserves the vote. He has a campaign with substance: openness for the codebase, and openness for the userbase. Also, given the extraordinary amount of negativity which has been displayed during this election, Squeaky has my respect for keeping it clean. To my knowledge, he has not engaged in mudslinging or dirty tricks. In short, Squeaky has run a Squeaky Clean campaign.

So, if you haven't voted yet, please do!

I think our best option at this point is to work towards achieving 3rd choice because I have a strong feeling we're going to have a round 2 of these elections

The polls are open.

At the end of the process, I predict wank. Huge wank. Also, voting is slowing down for the moment, so tomorrow I'll work on doing an update post, unless someone else is interested in taking up that task.

New Squeaky banner

I just knocked together a new Squeaky banner in a couple of different sizes. It's not elaborate but it's servicable. I'll see what I can do later tonight about producing a version with a few more bells and whistles.

EDITED TO ADD: Plus two more banners in the same style with a green outline.

Snaggable

Well, I had made the icon:

I decided I should try and contribute my part, and patched together a banner. It's not beautiful, but it's snaggable!

Showing my support.

IJ's a pretty awesome site, so I wanted to show my support by creating an icon and banner for the upcoming vote. I know they're not masterpieces, but it's the thought that counts, right?

A banner

I made a banner in paint. Its kind of lame, and alot of you can probably make much better banners than this. But I just thought I would post it, anyone is welcome to use it. Read more... )

Squeaky Answers Question About Conflict of Interest

Squeaky has answered a very important question regarding his candidacy and whether it poses a "conflict of interest." I knew this would come up sooner or later, and his reasoning makes sense. This is something that we, as supporters, should be expected to answer if the question/criticism comes up, so please take note of his response.

To summarize, mimesis posed this question to squeaky:

Re: LJAB - user representative?
mimesis 5/10/08 05:08 pm
i think Squeaky is doing a great job with IJ and i'm very happy with his communication and running of this site.

while all of that is wonderful, i don't think it addresses the professional conflict of interest that he has as the IJ admin/owner/[insert proper title here].

it's a legitimate ethical concern. what say you, Squeaky?

*

(for anyone reading the comment who hasn't had to think about these issues before) -- this is a common question in professional circies, and answering it is simply part of being a professional. it's also commonly understood that the question is due to competing business interests and responsibilities. it's not a question of personal character, which is understood to be of high quality.

To which squeaky responds:

Re: LJAB - user representative?
squeaky 5/10/08 07:31 pm (local)
Of course I feel that I am legitimate. I don't think that it represents a conflict of interset. I want LJ to do good, as the better LJ does the bigger the industry is and the bigger all the "clone sites" get bigger.

Also by getting the codebase back open, it will help LJ as they will be getting the help of the open source community once again. That's how they got so big, and that is how all the other sites got bit.

At its height, GreatestJournal and DeadJournal were HUGE and still LiveJournal was bigger and continued growing. I see that being able to happeng again. Also I don't see InsaneJournal or JournalFen or CommieJournal or any of the other blog hosts as competition to LJ, are just filling a niche in the market that LJ is unable or unwilling to fill.

Voting Information

Information about the LJ Advisory Board election process can be found here, and nominations began on May 5th and will continue through May 14th.

Squeaky has already reached the minimum amount of support comments here and will appear on the ballot, but please (if you have an account on LJ) add to the list if you have not done so and are willing to show your support! One comment of support per user, please.

The election poll will be posted from May 22, 2008 through May 29, 2008. LJ will announce it in their news community and the polls will be posted in lj_election_en ([info]ljelection_en) and lj_election_ru. Users will be able to select their first, second, and third choice.

Users using the Cyrillic-language service may only vote in the lj_election_ru and all other users may only vote in the lj_election_en poll. Additional restrictions are:
-Only accounts created before March 11, 2008 may vote in this year's poll
-Only one account per email address may vote

Also, we need volunteers! We need people to help promote Squeaky, as well as make banners/icons/graphics to advertise his presence on the ballot (within the TOS of both LJ and IJ), and also remind people to go vote once the polls open. Interested? Let us know!

Getting The Ball Rolling

First, I would like to publicly apologize to [info]aristoboule for putting her on the spot. She is very enthusiastic in her support for [info]squeaky, but she is also not feeling her best, and does not consider herself "campaign spokesperson." Neither do I.

To quote Emily Dickinson:

I'm nobody! Who are you?
Are you nobody, too?
Then there's a pair of us--don't tell!
They'd banish us, you know.

This asylum is for all the somebodys and nobodys who support [info]squeaky for the LJ Advisory board.

Please feel free to share your ideas, images, and so forth here, as long as it's relevant. I can't do this alone, and neither can [info]aristoboule.
