I Resist the Muses

I don't know what I expect to find there, but I do know that I believe there is one. I mean, there are stranger things that are real, you know?

Secret government agencies, giant alien robots that transform into vehicles, ... girl mechanics.

I participated in a battle with creatures who wanted to destroy humankind and turn Earth into one giant mechanical wasteland. Why should the concept of an Afterlife be so surprising? It makes about as much sense as everything else that I've seen proven real.

What do I expect to find when I get there?

I really don't know because I haven't given it much thought.

I'm too busy living this life to the fullest that I can.

That's a funny question in my head.

You see, my perceptions of life and death are a bit more flexible than most people's. It has to be in my line of work... in my life... in my experiences.

I'm the Vampire Executioner... and a Federal Marshall that is often called in to deal with issues that the normal police cannot.

From what I have been told, I have died at least twice and... there was nothing afterwards. I didn't see any of the bright lights people talk about. There were no people that I had lost welcoming me there.

There was nothing.

So, no, I do not believe in an Afterlife.

If this question had been asked of me in the past, I would have answered with a resounding no. Oh, in Camorlene we are taught all about a religion and what happens to us after death if we anger our god, but it was nothing that I could find a grain of honesty in. I never found a thread of belief to guide me along the path that everyone around me seemed to blindly follow.

Then something quite spectacular happened to me.

My horse, Hwin, started speaking, we met Shasta, I mean Cor, and his horse Bree, and we ran away to the land of Narnia.

Therein, I met Aslan.

After meeting and talking with Aslan, after seeing so many things around me, how could I not believe that there is another life beyond this one that we begin after we are finished here?

What do I expect to find there?

My mother.

In all honesty, I really am not sure if I do believe in such a thing or not.

Considering everything I have seen and done in the last few years of my life, you would think that a concept of the Afterlife would be something that I could easily believe in. However, after losing Norrington because he was protecting me... and then losing Will...only to have him come back...and then be forced to serve as Captain of the Flying Dutchman...

How can I honestly believe in something like the Afterlife that people talk of in such glowing and flowery terms?

Death is something that I am all too familiar with, I am afraid. I have seen good and brave men die because they are sticking to their ideals and what they believe in.

I am just not sure I can believe in something like the Afterlife after the reality of death and imprisonment of souls as I have seen.

Yes, yes I do. I believe very strongly in this, as do most others of Rohan.

We are always riding into battles with the cries of our Ancestors on our lips and our desire to make them proud so we can meet them in the Afterlife with our heads held high and our eyes unashamed. The lives we lead in this life are how we will be judged and held up against in the halls of our ancestors.

What do I expect to find when I get there?

A hall of gold with the thrones of our kings. I expect to find the heroes of Rohan throughout history.

Most of all, I expect to find my family waiting for me.

My father, my mother, my uncle, my cousin...

What more could I want?

Very much so.

I have studied so much about the Egyptian Afterlife -- and I have seen so many things that lead credence to it, that I cannot help but to believe in the existence of the Afterlife.

Then again, I have also been there, so I know for a fact that it does in fact exist. There's not much more proof than that, I don't think. True, I didn't stay long as my loved ones brought me back from the dead.

What do I expect to find there?
