Week Five-Wednesday-Eagle Nest Lake
Who: Puck(Maverick) and Silas(Things)
Where:Sounds side of Eagle Nest Lake
When: Roughly noon
Why: Random Encounter
Rating: PG-13

Puck had grown very fond of the woods around Eagles Nest Lake, and took his weekly walk as was accustomed. Maverick especially loved these walks cause it meant he could stretch his legs more so than when he was around the theater or garden. Puck watch as Maverick ran father south along the lake and begin to stalk a few wild birds at the edge of the water. The beauty of this area always made him relax. The wind, the water, the sounds the ducks made as they flew angrily away after his dog ran at them, and the soft sweat aromas from the woods. Couldn't get much better then this.

Maverick watched his master sit down at the edge of the lake. From the routine they kept he knew there was time to explore before it was time to return home. Turning towards the woods Maverick started to work his way through the lower brush in search for something to play with. A soft wind rustled the leaves and he caught the smell of a fury little critter down wind from him. Lowering himself as low as he could Maverick began to stalk his prey. He got close enough to see the rabbit eating at a small patch of grass. 'A quick and easy meal you will make my friend...

After he added the last rabbit to the bunch hanging from the saddle, Silas glanced around the clearing in the forest where he had set the snares. The day was a beautiful spring one. Fresh breezes tugged the grasses this way and that, to find interference from brush ringing the perimeter, and then the rising pines all around. Boughs moved in the wind and he smelled the resin from the trees. The sound of ducks made Silas look up. He wondered what, or who, had disturbed them at the lake not too far from this clearing. It still seemed strange that he didn't hear gunfire as the source of their disturbance. Back before the world changed, there had been lots of hunting with the survivalist group in Idaho. Bullets were more precious and rare now. He kept some in a concealed pistol, reserved for the last response to unavoidable danger.

The mixed breed lurcher, part deerhound, collie and greyhound, made a wuffing sound as he also looked up into the sky where the ducks flew. With a glance at Silas, Thing saw the man climb in the saddle. He ran out ahead of Queso and their human partner, entering the forest on his favourite path that would eventually lead them back home. As he moved along in his world of canine scents, everything from the lake to rabbits and the variety of wildlife filtered into his sensitive nose. Then something new, the smell of a dog Thing didn't know. The wind also carried the scent of human. He looped back toward Silas and the red and white Appaloosa. Thing barked, announcing the presence of strangers, before he took off through the underbrush.

Silas rode after him, slowly bringing up the rear while he listened. As soon as he heard the barking, by which he could judge distance and direction, he climbed down from the back of Queso. He tied the horse's reins to a suitable branch, leaving his mount with the harvest of snared hares, and set out on foot.

Meanwhile, Thing barked loudly on his run from the woods, coming from behind the stranger dog. He slowed down, then stopped, watching the husky. From further on nearer the lake, he smelled a man. He moved forward confidently while Silas stayed back, concealed for now.

Puck stood as he heard the barking in the distance. It wasn't mavericks and it seemed to be moving in a hurry. Moving quickly he found Mavericks tracks and began to fallow them. I knew his dog could handle himself but just wanted to make sure. 'Dog what have you done this time'

The bunny was proving to be a rather delicious meal, but his dinner guest wasn't be all to quiet about his approach. Maverick heard him come closer, smelt the human who was with him, and could care less. His owner was on the move and coming closer with each passing second and this unknown man seemed to be staying back. But the fellow canine wasn't so cautious and not so stealthy.

His rabbit meal almost finished Maverick had two options, Turn and see his new company, or head off towards his owner and clean up with a swim in the lake. Decisions decisions.

Thing moved closer to the other dog and stopped a couple of feet away, looking down at the well-muscled canine. He couldn't miss the smells of the freshly eaten rabbit, nor of the stranger, whose scents were intermingled with that of the husky and vice versa. He looked from one to the other.

Silas didn't come out of concealment yet, though he wasn't getting the impression this other man might mean trouble.
