Week Five - Sunday - Eagle Nest
WHO: Bridget and Loki
WHERE: Eagle Nest, Marketplace.
WHEN: Midday Sunday
WHY: Down to Eagle Nest on Angel business, Bridget encounters Loki.
RATING: Likely PG, but TBD

Bridget still didn't like coming down to Eagle Nest. The whole place reminded her of the quote from Star Wars: 'You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy.' It wasn't completely accurate of course as there were far worse places than Eagle Nest, but it wasn't a complete exaggeration either. Regardless of her opinion of the town, there was business to be done and she wasn't in the mood to delegate.

She hadn't come alone this time but instead traveled with a small group of Angels. The presence of strangers with fleur de lis on them who weren't just passing through made her nervous, as did the rumors of slave traders nearby. Frankly traveling alone on the highway was just a bad idea with so many transients out and about, especially in her condition. Once they reached town, everyone had their own tasks or pleasures to seek out and went their separate ways with the understanding to regroup later in the afternoon for the trip back to Angel Fire.

Bridget had trades to check on at the marketplace, then planned to drop in on the Noble Hearts and see how progress was coming on the play. When she reached the marketplace she was surprised and not a little dismayed to spot Loki at the Aesir's trading stand. What were the odds? They hadn't seen each other since his attempt to browbeat her into coming to live with the Aesir a few weeks ago and she had no desire for a repeat performance.

Had he ever worked a nine to five job Loki would have been sleeping in, spending the day curled in his sheets with a beautiful woman by his side. But he'd never worked a nine to five job, had seldom had regular lazy sundays with a beautiful woman. The sundays he remembered were in the desert with twenty other guys who were all missing their lives at home. He hadn't missed his life back home. But he had missed his girlfriend.

If he'd chosen to sort himself out and try then perhaps they'd have been together now. Perhaps she'd be the one carrying his children and not the ever growing second in command for the Angels. The very woman who stood not even three foot from him at her stall. She looked exhausted. Did she ever let someone else take control? Or was she still naively hell bent on trying to change her tribe?

Had she been just another ex-girlfriend he would have ignored her. Their last meeting had been a disaster and he had no reason to think this one would be any different. But the truth of it was that she was carrying his children and he wanted in their lives. He wouldn't try and bully her into living with him but he needed her to understand why the thought of them being with the Angels was so horrendous. The things Nemo was capable of. Surely she had heard? Surely she didn't believe it all stories?

Deciding that Swan had enough of a grip on things to be unattended for an hour he walked past Bridget and stopped just next to her, inspecting the goods on the table, "Nice day," he murmured non comitally, his eyes focused on the knick knacks displayed, "Much better for you in the shade though," waiting a beat but not looking at her he walked off towards the back of a cluster of stalls owned by the Lost Girls. Meandering away some he found a grouping of low bushes and waited there like some sort of leather clad Romeo in a highschool budget remake.

Bridget wasn't completely surprised when she heard Loki's voice by her side. Given that they hadn't seen each other in over two weeks it was inevitable that he'd try to talk to her if the oporutnity presented itself and she couldn't really blame him either. There had been a connection between them that night and Bridget couldn't completely blame their activities on the alcohol, would it really kill her to hear what he had to say this time?

She finished up what she was doing and excused herself, taking a roundabout path toward the spot she'd last seen Loki. Eventually she spotted him by the bushes and managed not to roll her eyes, could they really be any more High School than sneaking off into the bushes? Now that she was there she really wasn't sure what to say. "You look good," she finally offered. "The leather must be warm in this heat though."

"It's a little hot but if I look good," his eyes glinted with humour and he gave her a smile that contained a light laugh, "It's a uniform, can't be seen slacking in my cashmere."

He looked at Bridget, taking her in, her belly looked bigger than he remembered, which was probably wrong because she still had months to go, but then she was carrying two. "Pretty soon you won't be able to come down to the market," he tried to hide the disappointment under the words but suddenly standing here with her he felt somewhat resigned. He knew that at the end of this month his time was up. She would be staying at the lodge until she gave birth and then he would either have to increase trade with Nemo to see them or wave goodbye completely. "What will we do then?"

Bridget's smile disappeared at his words and the obvious disappointment behind them. So much for lighthearted conversation, but she hadn't really expected that anyway.

She pondered his question silently for a little while, giving it the serious consideration it deserved. The last thing she wanted to do was prevent her children from getting to know their father, but she wasn't about to have them raised in a glorified biker gang either. If only he didn't have this stupid grudge against her tribe! "I'm not biking anymore, but I can take a horse and buggy down here for a while yet." Exactly how long was uncertain, but she figured she'd be good for another month at least. By the end of July though she was certain she'd be staying close to home until the babies were born.

"We're having the Hearts put on a production of A Midsummer Night's Dream in mid-June, you could come up for that." If he wanted a more permanent solution, well, this wasn't the place to discuss that.

He felt his heart lighten somewhat to hear that she could still use a horse and cart to carry her here on Angels business. Loki avoided dealings with the Angels until necesarry but it hadn't escaped his notice that Nemo had been absent from the city for the majority of the month. It was just like him to make a pregnant woman do his biddings while he played omnipotent leader up at the lodgings but he had to thank him at least a little bit, because it meant he got to talk to her alone with only a medium amount of risk at being discovered. Whenever Nemo was around he got the sense the man was watching him, studying him, just as Loki did to him. Two predators locked in an unspoken but very real battle. Nemo had a greater talent at masking his competitive nature than Loki did - he'd been told more than once that his pride and inability to hide his emotions was a potential flaw. He'd been working on it but the weeks had proved hard and so training his body into internalising all negative feelings had taken a back seat.

"That's good," he finally replied his eyes dipping to her belly, "I'll come to the play," outwardly a representative of his tribe but secretly to talk to the mother of his children. He wished he could walk over and hold her, whisper sweet nothings into her ear as if they were a happy couple awaiting the birth of their love child. But after initital chemistry he knew very little of Bridget. They could have passing ships in the night but unexpectedly he'd dropped an anchor. His eyes hadn't left her bump, "Can you feel them? Moving around inside?" he tentatively extended a hand to feel them, "May I?"

"Good!" Bridget beamed at his decision to attend the play. It would be an opportunity to show off her tribe and possibly her apartment at the lodge. She wanted to show Loki that they weren't the bunch of crazy people he took them for and that she had a good place to live.

"I think so," She nodded at his questions and reached out to take his hand in hers to place it on her belly, where his eyes had already been glued. "Just in the last week or so I've started feeling flutters, almost like being tickled on the inside, I don't really know how else to describe it." She lifted her eyes to his briefly as she moved his hand to where she thought one of the twins was moving. "I don't know if you'll be able to feel anything yet, but eventually they'll be big enough you could see them move inside me, the skin will ripple." She offered him a pained smile. "It kind of freaks me out a little if I think about it too long."

With his hand on her warm flesh Loki suddenly felt nervous about what he might experience moving underneath her skin. It took a moment of Bridget moving his hand to where she thought he may be able to feel what she did but eventually he felt a soft bump, ever so soft, almost like a heartbeat. He was helpless not to suck in an awed breath. He thought he'd dealt with the realness of the situation just seeing her grow before him but this felt like reality was smothering him under a thick blanket. Beneath her thin flesh his blood was growing strong and moving ready to face the world and all the things it presented. It was amazing and terrifying. One night. One too many drinks and a frenzied rush to rid the other of clothing that should have stayed on. With one fatal mistake - and he had viwed it as an embarrassing mistake at the time - two humans were produced. "I think I'm freaking out too," Loki murmured.

He was confident he wanted a family but he wasn't confident that he wanted a family with Bridget. They didn't even really know one another and he was asking her to give up her life and move in with him. </i>'How could he have been so stupid?' </i> he thought, 'Of course she's not going to move in with me she has no reason to, 'she doesn't hold any feelings for me'. Maybe that was the key. "I asked you to move in with me at the Aesir but I know that wasn't fair," he admitted, "Let's be honest we're both just doing this dance because of biology, you can't tell me you feel anything for me other than a lingering resentment over the discomfort I've put you in?" he took his hand away. "I think we need to start at the beginning again,"

Bridget smiled a bit at his initial reaction to feeling the kick from the outside. She honestly hadn't been sure he'd get to feel anything but it was clear that he had. Even if they didn't really knew each other well they had this to connect them for the rest of their lives, and she was glad that he wasn't repelled at the idea.

Then the next words out of his mouth made her blink and tilt her head as if to study him from a different angle, trying to determine where the sudden change of attitude sprang from. "I don't feel any resentment toward you Loki, not anymore anyway. Children are a gift, and they're growing inside me because of you." She was being a bit more charitable than she really felt, but the truth was if she still felt any irritation toward Loki it wasn't due to the fact he'd knocked her up.

"As for feelings, I don't know." She glanced up to meet his eyes uncertainly as he took his hand away, then broke the gaze to focus back on her belly, letting her hands wrap around it almost in a protective gesture. It wasn't normally like her to be hesitant or unsure with outsiders, but this was hardly a normal situation. "There had to be something other than alcohol at work because I'm not usually an easy lay, at all, and I've been drunk before. I'm not claiming to know you or be madly in love with you though, because it's pretty obvious we don't know each other well." She risked looking up at his eyes again, a bit irritated with herself for the way she was acting. This was stupid. She was Co-leader of the Angels, not some simpering schoolgirl! "As for starting at the beginning, what do you mean by that?"

Loki chewed on his lip, "I didn't mean to say you thought that these kids were a burden but this is hardly the ideal situation for anyone involved here," he gave a short sigh unable to stop it escaping, "I mean let's start how we should have done, with me politely introducing myself," he proferred a hand and a smile, "Hi I'm Loki, leader of the Aesir," he gently took her hand, "You're Bridget right? Of the Angels? Can't say I've ever had much pleasure dealing with them but if I get to look at your pretty face everytime I have to trade with them, well just maybe I'll grow to like it," his smile never faltered and he hoped she got the jist of the game he was playing.

Bridget felt a bit silly pretending she'd never met the man when she had his children growing inside her that very minute, but she shook his hand and tried to get into the right mindset. "That's right. And you're Loki of the Aesir, or did I get you mixed up with someone else? Obviously you can't be a Lost Girl..." She couldn't help but blush slightly at the complement and played along.

"You're not bad looking yourself, a girl could get used to trading with the Aesir if I get to look at eye candy all the time."

Loki smiled, as charming a smile as possible, at Bridget. "You'd be correct. Though I did try out for the Lost Girls but I wasn't pretty enough," his smile turned to confusion, "Which I honestly don't understand,"

Without dropping the smile he continued, "People have been saying that I need to work on my work relationships, and I wont lie, I don't have the best bond with your tribe. So would you maybe like to go for a drink with me? Or get something to eat? In a purely busines sense of course,"

Bridget couldn't help herself: a giggle bubbled up and out when he joked about being turned down by the Lost Girls. A mental image of Loki in drag popped into her head and it was all she could do not to break down in a full scale laughing fit.

She brought herself under control but was still smiling when he asked about going for a drink or food. "I'll pass on the drink but I think I'll take you up on the food, in the interests of tribal relations of course."
