Viggo at the Oscars [Feb. 25th, 2008|10:52 pm]

msilverstar
For those of you who haven't seen them yet, there are giant high-res pictures in the fantastic sparklies.org Oscar gallery.

And not high-res, but great fun: Viggo says hi to Cate and admires her pregnant belly

Then Viggo has an idea and it involves the San Lorenzo flag...

Note: I do not know the exact order in which things occurred. But the last picture is not a manip, I swear!

A Little ‘Eastern Promise’ among the Bardem Lovers

“I’m far away. I’m in Javier Bardem’s country,” Viggo Mortensen told the Baguette when he called to chat about his best acting Oscar nomination for “Eastern Promises.” Mr. Mortensen was in Madrid to finish editing books for his small press, percevalpress.com, and he told the Baguette that all the talk today was about Mr. Bardem’s nomination. “People are very happy about him here, and they’re sort of happy about me being nominated,” he said, as “a wayward adoptive son I suppose because I’ve done a few movies here and I’ve done a few movies in Spanish.”

He found out about his nomination from turning on the television. “They were just announcing the main acting category but they kept repeating the supporting actor because it was Bardem, and they repeated it again and again,” he laughed. “It was great!” But when they announced the lead actor nominations, they said his name just once, and he nearly missed it.

The Oscar race is “a bit of a game of chance that you’re not usually included in, and for some reason I am this time,” he said. “Dark horse is probably an understatement,” he said, laughing.

Mr. Mortensen said the nomination was bitter sweet because of the omission of the director, David Cronenberg. “People appreciate him, but they can’t quite pull the trigger or something, which was true of ‘History of Violence.”

Mr. Mortensen said the best part of the nomination was seeing how others reaction. “It’s nice to see people that you work with be happy, and it’s nice to see your family be happy about something that’s to some degree a crap shoot, obviously, but it’s still is nice, you know, and if you don’t usually get included in that stuff, and for reason I got lucky today, and I do acknowledge that and appreciate it.”

Could she be Katie?

Source: Interview with Ariadna Gill

Ariadna (translation)
-Are you working in any new projects?
- I have a very interesting one: a secondary role in the US in the new movie directed by Ed Harris, in which Viggo Mortensen stars as well. So there I'll go. They have already started shooting. And in February I will work in the new Agustin Diaz Yanes project.
- So that will be your mini-American experience?
- It's going to be a great experience/the real thing (not sure about the exact meaning of "en toda regla".) To shoot with people that you don't know, and in another language. But I'm OK, because Viggo is there, and he is a fantastic person.

Now available at Perceval Press:

TIME WAITS FOR EVERYONE Viggo Mortensen

There are pianos everywhere, there for the playing, there for the sound of places, to turn the soil, to uncover the roots of things, as roadmaps to our true motives, instructing, retelling, drawing from us -- with a patience and sincerity we may not always manage on our own -- what is essential about breathing and dreaming, what may really be happening as we run blood through ourselves, share or take it from others, passing into Autumn, only just aware of the trees. -piano improvisations found in Hungary, Germany, Poland, Russia, and in rememberance of things past. Played by Viggo Mortensen, recorded by Travis Dickerson.

EP GOT IT!!

TORONTO (AP) - Canadian director David Cronenberg's Eastern Promises picked up the award for fan favorite during the Toronto International Film Festival's closing award ceremonies Saturday.

The tense and bloody Russian mob drama starring Viggo Mortensen took the Cadillac People's Choice Award on the final day of the 10-day movie marathon to cheers from the crowd gathered at a downtown Toronto hotel.
Cronenberg was not on hand to pick up the award. He was in New York promoting the film, which was doing well at the box office.

The film, costarring Naomi Watts, has earned rave reviews and features a memorable steam-room fight scene in which a fully naked Mortensen fights off his would-be killers.

Eastern Promises wins at Toronto

September 15, 2007

By Roger Ebert

TORONTO, Ont.—“Eastern Promises,” David Cronenberg’s highly- praised movie about Russian gangs in London and a midwife (Naomi Watts) protecting the baby of a mother who died in her arms, won the $15,000 Cadillac Audience Award on Saturday, as the most popular film at the 32nd Toronto International Film Festival.

The first runner-up was “Juno,” Jason Reitman’s much-loved human comedy about a pregnant teenager, her parents, and he prospective adoptive parents of her child. She was played by young Ellen Page, who emerged from the festival as a leading Oscar contender. The brilliant first screenplay was by Diablo Cody, an ex- stripper from Chicago and Minneapolis.

David Cronenberg's "Eastern Promises" was the most popular film at the 32nd Toronto International Film Festival.
“Eastern Promises” opened Friday to some of the best reviews of the year, and is considered the most accomplished work of Cronenberg, the Canadian who is on a roll after “A History of Violence” two years ago. Compared to “The Godfather,” it stars Viggo Mortensen in another performance that seems certain to be nominated.

The Toronto festival has no official jury like Cannes. Instead, moviegoers members vote on the Audience Award, in a process adjusted to account for theater sizes. Many other awards are given by local and national groups, on their own.

Mortensen Takes Driver's Seat in New Film
Actor Had to Get Several Fake Tattoos for the Role

His role as the fearless warrior Aragorn in the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy shot heartthrob Viggo Mortensen to international fame. But he'll trade the sword for the steering wheel in his latest film, the mafia drama "Eastern Promises."

Mortensen plays Russian-born Nikolai Luzhin, a driver for one of London's most notorious organized families.

"There was a lot I had to learn on this movie, speaking Russian, as we do in some of the scenes," Mortensen said today on "Good Morning America." "But I met some Russian people, including people that have pasts that are not unlike my character's. Once they realized I wasn't going to be making fun of them or judging them, they were really helpful."

Mortensen said he enjoyed working with his co-stars, including Naomi Watts.

"She does such fine work," he said. "It's great to work with someone who is so detailed and so subtle with their acting. It's really a nice dance that you have with a person like that who is that talented.

"But you need a director like David Cronenberg, who takes care of those little hesitations, those little smiles she gives," Mortensen continued. "A lot of directors would go, whatever, get on with it and it wouldn't be in the movie. But she [Watts] gives a very well-balanced performance and she's easy to look at."

In the movie Mortensen said his character has an "interesting relationship" with Watts' Anna Khitrova.

"She's an English midwife and I'm this Russian underworld type," he said. "At first there is the man-woman thing, but there is also a big cultural divide. She doesn't trust me. I don't know when she's making fun of me. Eventually they connect."

In the film, Mortensen sports several fake tattoos that took hours to apply each day. All are on display during the final scene, shot in a bathhouse.

Mortensen said it was only natural to perform the scene nude. "I don't think it's realistic that a towel would stay on the whole time," Mortensen said.

"Eastern Promises" opens in limited release Friday, Sept. 14, and nationwide Sept. 21.
