Two Ducks and a NaziCycle
Who: Hans & Marie-Pierre
When: Evening, a few days after the drinking incident:
Where: the streets of Paris, the top of a hill outside the city, the Occitan bistro
Summary: Hans. Marie-Pierre. A motorcycle. Musicala. What could go wrong?
Complete
Rating: PG-13 , some kissage at the end.

No one had been more surprised than Hans to learn that his new position came with an official vehicle. He assumed perhaps a staff car of some sort when they'd told him about it at work in the morning - it would be useful, he supposed, for getting around town. When they'd brought it out of the motorcade , he was surprised to find it was a motorcycle complete with sidecar. "For on and off road," they explained to him, and showed him the basics of operation. After a few lessons, they handed over keys, helmet, and manual and wished him luck.

Hans did what any responsible soldier of the Reich would do - drove promptly back to his house and parked the motorcycle outside. Of course, he only stopped long enough to pick up an extra coat, and a carton of cigarettes, tossing both into the sidecar. Then he started driving around looking for a certain Occitan . The law of circumstances said that if he drove down enough streets in all the usual places, eventually he would run into Marie-Pierre. And if he did not, well. At least he was learning how to drive this thing without being a danger to himself and the citizens of Paris.

Marie-Pierre was beginning to wonder whether the motorcycle was actually following him. He was fairly certain that there could be no good reason for a motorcycle to follow him, and he did not fancy his chances with the bad reasons; perhaps he was simply being paranoid, but perhaps it was a good thing he had his knife strapped to his wrist, no?

Not that he looked particularly nervous. He hadn't even turned to look at the machine since the sound of its engine had attracted a brief glance when it was still a couple of blocks away.

Once he spotted Marie-Pierre, Hans followed for a while until he came to a place that looked like he could safely try to communicate.

Now, if he could just find the lights or the horn...

He managed to find the lights, and flashed them to try and get Marie-Pierre's attention.

Well, so much for hope, no?

Marie-Pierre stiffened, halted, and after a brief moment in which his eyes flashed darkly and he smiled a tight private smile, he turned on his heels with his face schooled into a carefully neutral interrogative expression with just the slight touch of apprehension which would be expected of a man in his position.

Hans slowed the motorcycle, and came to a (somewhat less than graceful) stop. He stepped down from his cycle, took off the helmet so that Marie-Pierre would get a good view of his face, and grinned.

"Herr Duclos," he said, a touch of likely unneeded formality - but they were out on the street. "Would you be so kind as to come with me?"

Marie-Pierre relaxed instantly and gave Hans a wry smile. "Only if you can drive it better than you can stop it, Herr Varner. And next time - do you think you could pull up past me, so that I can see who you are before I start thinking of knifework?"

"I was afraid to drive past you, Herr Duclos, least I accidentally run you down," Hans replied, somewhat sheepishly. "I am not yet very familiar with the operation of this vehicle."

He indicated the sidecar, in which there was one of Hans' long coats, mostly covering a second helmet and the carton of cigarettes. "You have your own private chariot, even."

"You think of everything," said Marie-Pierre, pulling the coat and helmet on on; and as he saw the cigarettes, "everything and then some. Have we a destination in mind? And on a scale of one to terrible, how foolish do I look in this getup?"

"On a scale of one to terrible? I would say... ah, things I should not say on the street. So let us leave it at it does not look bad."

Hans donned his own helmet, and got back on to the cycle after seeing that Marie-Pierre was comfortable in the sidecar. "I had three ideas in mind... one, that we could drive to the countryside. How far is out of the city? This goes off road, they say. Two - tear up the streets of Paris, and see what we can find. Three - ah, that would be asking where you would like to be taken, and acting as your chauffeur."

"I am honoured to be given the chance to lose my life at your side as you teach yourself to drive a motorcycle by taking it offroad," said Marie-Pierre solemnly. "It isn't far at all to lose oneself in the middle of nothing outside Paris. A twenty-minute drive, and our bodies will go undiscovered for weeks, unless they decide to track the motorcycle earlier than that. I look forward to it extremely."

"Good then, let us lose ourselves outside the city. If we survive long enough, we can find a place to stop and have an unobstructed view of the stars."

Hans, after a bit of a false start, managed to get the motorcycle started again. "You may wish to hang on," he called over the noise of the engine. "I am not so good at the takeoff... worse than the stopping."

"Oh, magnificent. I trust you're alright at the keeping-going-once-you've-started part?" Marie-Pierre called back, then muttered (mainly for his own benefit and amusement, as it was not very audible), "Paire nòstre que siès dins lo cèl..."

"More or less!" Hans called. "At least, I have not hit anything yet!"

Hans wasn't lying about the roughness of the takeoff, but once they got going, it wasn't so bad. At least, until they came to a turn - which he took a little too sharply, causing a distinct tilt and squeal of tires.

"Sorry about that! It was a very sneaky corner - I did not see it coming."

"That thing on the handlebar is a brake," Marie-Pierre called out helpfully, "and you may find that a gentle and highly judicious application of pressure slows you down slightly before the corners which jump out at you so inconsiderately - "

He immediately regretted this piece of advise, picturing overconfident braking and the two of them flying end over end into a large and immobile structure such as a building, which would not be happy to receive them.

And where we are beautifully silhouetted for all onlookers crossed Marie-Pierre's mind, but he set it aside as Unlikely To Matter Much and climbed, only slightly shakily, from the sidecar.

He tossed the helmet back in and shook a pack of cigarettes out of the carton; settled himself on the ground and lighted one. Long-desired nicotine following an adrenaline rush...

"I suppose one can't say the Nazis are all bad, when they give you motorcycles like this."

Hans took off the helmet and tossed it into the sidecar, still smiling. "Did you believe how fast we went? That was amazing! I thought we might start flying."

He settled down into the grass beside Marie-Pierre, and promptly flopped back onto his back to look up at the stars.

"We could have, if we'd kept going over this hill..." Marie-Pierre moved his hands through the air to pantomime the motorcycle cresting the hill and continuing its arc while the road dropped away, terminating the gesture in falling backward himself.

He blew smoke rings in silence for a moment before observing:

"Well. They're certainly - starry."

"They look touchable," Hans said, and raised his hand towards the sky.

"When I was a child, I looked up into the sky and liked to name my own constellations by tracing the line of the stars. They always had some ridiculous name, like the 'Sauerbraten' and the 'Schandenfreude', and a little story as to why they were named such."

He laughed at his own folly, then looked over at Marie-Pierre. "They are a good brand? I do not smoke, but I tried to get something you would like."

"They are cigarettes," said Marie-Pierre gratefully. "They do not taste like they have already been smoked twice. They are wonderful. Thank you, Hansin, even if I have ruined my own Nadal by opening them now."

He tipped a centimetre of ash carefully into the grass at his side and drew in another lungful of carcinogens.

"Someday, I think, I would like to go below the equator and see what the sky looks like on the wrong side of the world."

Hans was pleased that Marie-Pierre liked the cigarettes, but he didn't want to make a big deal of it. "It is nothing," he said modestly. "And do not worry- I have other presents to give you for Nadal."

He reached for Marie-Pierre's non-smoking hand, gently taking it in his own.

"Do you think the sky looks different down there?" he wondered. "There is much I do not know about these far away places..."

His education had centered primarily on all things European.

"They have different constellations - you would have to be able to look through the earth to see ours from there, no? To look up and see the sky full of strange stars..."

Another draw on his cigarette in silence, the tip glowing red in the starlight.

"I have never been outside of Europe, but someday, perhaps... most likely the day after it rains the Hershey bars."

"After the war perhaps," Hans said, an expression of time he relied on entirely too much. But what else was there, other than that vague sense of 'someday'? Someday this madness had to end, one way or another...

He rolled over to lean on his elbow, watching Marie-Pierre as he smoked. "I have always thought if I should go to the Americas, I would go by boat not plane. Have you ever been in a plane? Only once for me, and that was enough."

"It makes me nervous," Hans admitted. "No ground under you - and if you crash, what then? At least in a motorcycle, you might survive, if painfully. But a plane..." He shivered a bit at the thought of it.

"Oc, I will keep to the motorcycle flight," he said, smiling in return. "Which reminds me - the motorcycle. We should give it a name."

"Frollo?" Hans asked, considering the name.

"It does have a rolling sound, like a cycle should. Why Frollo? Is this an Occitan word?"
