All is calm, all is bright
Who: Jacqueline, Vito, anyone else who may have been invited- or who needs a warm meal
When: Christmas Eve, 1940
Where: Jacqueline's flat
Rating: PG
Status: Open
Summary: Jacqueline invited her few friends over for dinner and drinks, and told them that they could bring guests.

Her food was a bit scarce this week, but she had invited people over for dinner... so she had to feed them. Jackie found herself resorting to things that her Mother used to do, back in Georgia. The soup bone went into a pot, with mixed greens. She wasn't sure what kind of greens they were, but they all cooked the same. She managed to get enough ground beef to make a meat loaf (stretched with bread crumbs, of course), and she cut up a few potatoes and stuck them in her oven. For dessert, she took old bread, sugar, and a bit of egg and milk, and made a cake like dish.

Once dinner was finished, Jackie waited. She hoped someone would show up- She hated spending Christmas alone.

Vito showed up not long after, bundled up against the wind and flurries in a greatcoat and a wool scarf. He had a basket with a bow on it in one gloved hand, and he knocked with the other, his eyes scanning the street for anything out of the ordinary.

Jackie looked out of her window before opening her door.

"Hurry in... It's freezing cold out there... and hello." she smiled.

"Hi," Vito said, smiling back. He went inside, handed the basket to Jackie and took off his coat. "It's just bitter out there today. Nice in here, though. Merry Christmas. How are you?"

"Thank you." Jackie smiled at the basket "I didn't get you anything..."

"You got me a place I want to be on Christmas," Vito said. "Didn't really have one of those, this year."

"Everybody should have a place to go on Christmas." said Jackie, trying to decide what to do with the coat "I could put some tea on... no one else is here yet."

Jackie put the coat on a hook, and walked over to the kitchen to put a kettle on.

"How have you been? Did you invite anyone else over?"

"Haven't seen anybody else around. Been busy, this week. Scrambling to get a few people something special to keep 'em looking the other way." He smiled. "Peace on earth, goodwill to men, and all that."

"They were just in season, south of here ... I think they're Portuguese. They're pretty good." He smiled, obviously pleased that Jackie liked the gift basket.

"It's getting harder to get things like that here." said Jackie, with a bit of a sigh "Sometimes I wonder if I should go back home... but I don't think I will. Things are probably the same over there."

Vito shook his head ruefully. "My mom says they're talking rationing everything, back home ... sugar, meat, gasoline. Hard times for everyone until this is all over, one way or the other."

"Georgia." replied Jackie "A little small town near the Florida border. How'd you end up out here... and most of the Americans I know wouldn't be up eating dinner with a black woman."

"Skin's just skin," Vito said. He pulled an ashtray a bit closer and lit a cigarette. "I never went up to Harlem, but I have a huge respect for all the music comin' out of there. I've met all kinds in the past few years, and where someone's from doesn't have as much to do with who they are as some people seem to think. I admire intelligence and creativity, and you got plenty of that."

Jackie smiled. "I'm glad you think that way. Most don't... and the Germans... well..." she frowned, and took the cigarette from Vito. "I'm really glad you think that way." she took a puff

Vito cracked a smile. "It's kind of a gift," he said. "Back in the neighborhood, nobody wanted to give me a hard time, because I was the guy who could usually find what they needed when they needed it. It's a little harder to build up that kind of network here, but I think I've done all right."

Jackie looked sad for a moment, as she sipped at her drink "It's almost like I can't escape it. People is people... not skin color or religion"
