Current mood:nervous

Introductions
Who: Hans, Gretchen, Marie-Pierre
When: a December evening
Where: Le Passant
Summary: Hans introduces Gretchen to Marie-Pierre, and visca versa
Complete/Incomplete: Incomplete
Rating: PG

Hans was nervous about introducing the two most important people in his life to each other. He thought that they would get along well -but still, what if they despised each other entirely? Or what if his sister, being how she was, asked entirely nosy questions - or worse, told embarrassing stories about his childhood? What if they hit it off too well, and Marie-Pierre started flirting with his sister? Still, he did want Marie-Pierre to keep an eye out for his sister in the dangerous city - and that would be hard to do if they'd never been introduced.

Trying to quell his apprehension, Hans settled at his usual table and waited for his guests to arrive. With any luck, at least the evening wouldn't end in either stabbings or despair.

Gretchen had managed to get out of work early and leave her humble home without being questioned as to where she was going and why, thankfully. She hadn't mentioned to Clarisse or anyone else that she'd found her brother -- the same way she didn't know how he'd react to her living with a common seamstress, she didn't know how Clarisse would react to her having a Nazi soldier for a relative.

Following the directions he'd written down for her, she made her way to Le Passant and entered cautiously, unbuttoning her jacket as her eyes scanned the room. She finally caught sight of Hans' head and hopped on over, surprising him with a kiss on the cheek from behind before sitting down. "Tag, liebe. Wie geht's?"

"Danke, gut," Hans replied, smiling at the kiss. "Besser jetzt."

He took her coat from her, and draped it over the chair his own coat was resting on so that she could sit comfortably.

"Herr Duclos has not yet arrived, but he will be here soon I'm sure. I trust you found the place without trouble?"

"Somehow," said Marie-Pierre, just then arriving, "I always manage to make my entrance exactly as you mention me. One of us clearly has impeccable timing."

Hans rose from the table, and gave a slight bow and an amused smile. "What is that saying they have - speak of the devil and he will come to you?"

He chuckled, then made introductions with a sweep of his hand to punctuate. "My sister, Gretchen Varner ; my good friend, Marie-Pierre Duclos."

Gretchen paused in sitting when the other man came to join them, smiling at him until her brother formally introduced them.

"Monsieur Duclos," she said politely as she extended her hand, figuring it'd be a nice gesture to not get all German on him during this first meeting.

"Fraulein Varner," Marie-Pierre replied, taking the offered hand and sketching half a bow over it. "Charmed."

Hans retook his place at the table, smiling.

"And here we all are," he said, looking from one to the other.

So far, so good.

Smiling to both men, Gretchen finally settled down in her seat and smoothed her skirt down. After Hans' disapproval of her typical going-out clothes, she'd decided to dress down a little and opt for a nice pencil skirt and a comfortable pink sweater.

"So we are," she said, also exchanging glances between the two. She wasn't quite sure what to say first, and so she busied herself with brushing her hair behind her ears.

"So we are - as this seems to be the thing to say," observed Marie-Pierre, "and I would hate to buck the trend."

Hans laughed a bit self-consciously. "Sorry. It is a bit awkward, ja? Gretchen is unused to me having a friend, and I am still getting used to her being here in Paris. And well, it is always a delicate matter meeting someone's sister, I am sure."

He glanced towards the bar. "Perhaps some wine, a little dinner, and this will be easier?"

"Ja, wine would be lovely," Gretchen piped in. If wine didn't help the conversation chug along more smoothly, nothing would.

She was still willing to try in the meantime, though. "So, Monsieur Duclos. What is it you do for a living?"

"I am the captain of a drill team," said Marie-Pierre. "We drill the holes through the middle of the donuts, you see - otherwise they would just be cakes. It's very important work that is often overlooked or underestimated."

"It is a 'hole' lot of work," Hans said, "but someone has to do it."

He chuckled, then got up from the table. "If you'll excuse me a moment..."

He headed barwards to collect some wine and cheese.

Gretchen giggled at their banter, shaking her head at them with a grin.

"Hansel was telling me all about your trips around the city. Seems like you two have been having fun."

"I had to take him on a tour," explained Marie-Pierre, "or he would have seen all of those touristy things, which are highly overrated."

Hans returned with the wine and cheese, and poured each of them a glass.

"Here we are," he said. "One non-Occitan wine, and cheese with no-snails."

"So I've gathered," Gretchen said to Marie-Pierre with a smile as Hans was returning to the table. She sat up straight once he did and took the glass of wine he poured for her.

"Danke, liebe," she said. She was a little excited to be sharing a drink with her brother; she'd always been too young in the past.

Hans raised his glass in toast to his companions, then had a sip.

"So I was showing Gretchen the pictures of our tour," Hans said to Marie-Pierre. "Since she is newly arrived in Paris, I thought she should get to know some of the culture..."

"And the all-important etiquette of the young woman in France?" suggested Marie-Pierre. "Such as how to be overly familiar and yet snooty."

Gretchen giggled at that, taking a sip of her wine and shaking her head as she reached over to pat Hans' hand.

"Don't worry, Hansel, I shan't turn into that. Not the overly familiar part anyway."

"Ah, but the snooty you'll consider?" asked Marie-Pierre with a teasing smirk. "More's the pity for us all."

"I hope the city does not change you in bad ways," Hans said, finding a bit of seriousness underlying the jovial talk. "Though I suppose, when it comes right down to it -living here has done nothing but change me for the better."
